Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

For this layout, I really liked the recipe card template from ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Recipe Pages, so I decided to make a recipe card about relationships and family. I wanted to show how, like a well-loved recipe that gets used often, spilled on, creased and torn, a relationship gets better with time, despite all the rough edges, coffee stains, taped corners, and spills. To do that, I chose grungy elements, placed my elements at odd angles, and layered like crazy. Some of my favorite parts of this layout are the coffee stains. To make them look worn onto the paper, I made a new layer and then selected a brush from Brush Set: Watermark. Then, I simply stamped on the stains using a color from my photo as my foreground color. Then I changed the Blending Mode of the brush layer until it was pleasing. Lastly, I moved the brush layer so that it landed above my text layer, so it looks like the spill occurred after the typing was made on the card, just like a well-worn recipe card.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I loved the simple look of ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: Life - Everyday by Chere Kaye Edwards, but when I finished my layout it seemed like something was missing. Whenever I feel that way about a layout, I try adding some kind of border. It seems to complete the layout and bring everything together. You can accomplish this in a few ways. Here, I used ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Edgy, Thin to create a child like scribble around the edges that finish it off perfectly.

Name of challenge: Create a layout using an actual song title as your layout title.

Journaling: I just had to write this down as my heart was filled with love for the two-year-old boy who just stepped on a cracker that he dropped on the rug. When he saw the cracker smithereens, he said, "It's a mess, Mama!" I said, "Yes, it's a mess." He replied, "I clean it up, Mama! We need a nakin (napkin)!" He ran over to the table, grabbed a three-inch stack of napkins, ran back to the rug, and proceeded to "wipe" up the cracker crumbs by scattering them every which way. Now that I have cracker droppings everywhere instead of just one spot, and more messes to clean up than I can clean in a week, I just have to kiss that boy's face!

One day he won't say "Kiss me, Mama!" or "Kiss my feet!" He won't put his hands on my face and say, "Mommy so cute!", nor will he say, "Thank you, Hot Baby!" when I hand him his dinner plate.

He won't dump shampoo all over our playroom, or powder the hardwood floors with white baby powder. He won't roar at me incessantly, and when I tell him he's too loud, he says he's a baby tiger.

He won't throw various and random things in the trash can for me to find later. There's no telling what has been lost to the trash truck. As I was writing this, I had to stop and rescue a sippy cup, all of the napkins from the kitchen table, a dry erase marker, and a couple pacifiers from the trash can. When I asked him why he did it, he said, "I clean the table, Mama!" He's so happy about his efforts, I can only smile and tell him thank you.

He won't run to the door with joy and excitement and say, "Mama's here, Mama's here!" He won't wake up from his nap with warm, rosy cheeks and snuggle with me for as long as I want while he holds his blankets (yes, I said blankets. He has three).

He won't smile his cute little smile at me every time I ask him to. He won't always look at me with those adoring blue eyes and say, "Wuv you, Mama." So, I'm going to sit down and do puzzles, and play cars, and read books to my little man, because he won't be little forever, and as Ryan wisely reminds me, he won't always want to do those things with me. I'm not even going to think about the cracker crumbs everywhere. Who cares about that when I have this handsome boy all to myself today? Yep. He's got my heart in his hands and to know him is to love him like crazy! Andrew Waveland McCabe: Age 2.5 October 2010

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I used the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Pierced to add holes along the edge of the layout. There are three different papers in the background, so I duplicated the template layer twice and positioned a template layer under each paper layer. I adjusted the Blending Modes and found that "Multiply" gave the look I wanted without altering the colors on the two solid papers while the "Darken" mode gave the patterned paper a similar look.

I have a shortcut I love to use when creating strips of text. I type the first line, then hold the Shift key down, move my cursor to the next starting point of text and click the left mouse button, and continue on. It saves me time to not have to click on the checkmark up at the top each time I finish a line. Also, if you need to make changes to text, double-click in the thumbnail image in the Layers Palette, and it will highlight that area of text for you.

With this layout, I had the opportunity to play with the Blending Modes of the elements in the "Love" template from ScrapSimple Word Art Templates: Photo Words. For example, take the large green flower - once I decided on which paper I wanted to use, I clipped my paper to the flower (Ctrl+Alt+G) and then played with the Blending Mode to find the look I was going for. I used a combination of "Overlay" and/or "Soft Light" for the butterflies and flowers in that template.

To make the denim in the layout look like the denim on my son's jeans, which are almost always wrinkled, I applied the wrinkled paper brush from Dynamic Brush Set: Textured 8201 to the layer above the paper. Next, I set the color to white and used a brush from Brush Set: Worn Threads to make the center section look worn, like the knees in a pair of jeans.

One of my favorite techniques for creating flow on my layouts is to scatter small embellishments along an imaginary path. On this layout, I added the pink and silver brads to my layout. Then I duplicated each brad several times and arranged them on the page. To create visual interest, I resized some of the brads. The end result is a subtle path for the eye to follow from the top of the page down to the bottom of the layout.

Emails about Baby

July 26, 2002: Meet and Greet

I had my second doctor appointment today. Still weigh the same as I did a month ago at the last visit. Didn't gain any weight. Is this normal? I had to wait 15 minutes in the little room for the doctor. It seemed like a long time. I started wondering if I was really pregnant. Silly! A friend of mine had a "ghost pregnancy" where she had all the symptoms, but no baby. I started to pray.

Dr. Z came in the room. He said we would listen for a heartbeat today. We didn't hear it right away, and I was still wondering if there was a baby in there. Then we heard it! It really did sound like a train chugging along. Dr. Z said, "I'm not sure, but it sounds like there might be two heartbeats." (Wow!) "Or it could be an echo, but we'll do an ultrasound and see." So he dragged in this old ultrasound machine and called in a resident doctor to watch the process. The lights went out and we got started. This was getting exciting. I wasn't expecting to get an ultrasound and have twins today! We got to see one baby. I could see him moving around, and I could see the heart beating, too. How precious! Dr. Z still wasn't 100% sure if I was having twins. It looked like there could be another sac back here. One baby could be hiding the other. He asked me if there are any twins in the family. My grandfather is a twin. Because this was an old ultrasound machine, he sent me over to radiology to use one of their machines. Before I left, he told me that all the tests I had at my last visit came back normal - and it's okay that I didn't gain any weight.

I had to wait an hour.

A lady named Barb did the ultrasound on the new machine. She was very business-like and didn't say much. "There's only one baby," she said. I tried not to be disappointed. Two babies at once sounded like a lot of work, but the idea of twins was a little bit exciting. It made me laugh to see the arms and legs and little body moving around. There really was a baby in there. No ghost pregnancy here!

Barb recorded all types of measurements. It was too early to tell if it's a boy or a girl. Barb was still looking and looking. I had no idea what she was doing. Finally, we were done. I'd been there all morning, and I was really ready to go home. Barb gave me two baby pictures to take with me. He really looked like an alien. But he was soooo cute! In one of the pictures, you could see that both of his hands were touching his face.

Maybe next time we will have twins. Meanwhile, I went home and listened to the song Alien while I gazed at my little alien.

Love,
Sarah

September 23, 2002: Baby Plays a Game

I have an interactive belly right now. Give it a couple of pokes and it will poke back! You can actually see the movement!

Friday, September 20, was my doctor's appointment. The visit was a short one. Heard the heartbeat, asked some questions, and got signed up for an ultrasound which will be tomorrow, the 24th. I went home.

So tomorrow is a big day. I have to drink 32 ounces of water. The difficult part is I have to hold it in. I just know I'm going to be leaking all over the hospital.

The big question is, will it be a Markus or a Molly?

Love,
Sarah

September 24, 2002: Ultrasound Day

It's a Girl!

Congratulations to the grandparents.

The ultrasound went very well. A guy named Robert did the honors. The bladder was ultra-full. The first thing I asked Robert was, "When can I have a bathroom break?!" He was very quick with whatever he needed to check with the full bladder. Five minutes into the ultrasound, it was relief time.

It took half an hour to take the measurements and look at the organs. The monitor wasn't really facing toward me so it was hard to see what was going on. After the official stuff was done, Robert turned the monitor my way and showed me all the points of interest. She has the sweetest little face... hands... feet. Her legs were curled up. There were no little man parts, though. It's all woman.

I have some pictures of the face and hands. She is sooo sweet. We will see if we can get those pictures scanned in and send you some.

Love for now,
Sarah Ann

December 30, 2002: Time to Have A Baby!

5:13 a.m.

Hi! It's time! At 2:15 a.m., my water broke. The contractions are irregular, and they are just mild cramps right now. Bill and I are both wide awake. I should be sleeping, but how can I? It's too exciting. I had almost convinced myself that this baby would not be born until the end of January, maybe even February. Now it looks like she could be here in 2002.

We are in very early labor here. I should try to sleep now. Ha, Ha, Ha....

I'll try to email again before we go to the hospital.

Bye for now,
Sarah

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial: Making Altered Magnets

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 on a Mac OSX.

Today, I thought I would share a simple and quick craft project that makes a perfect gift for a family member, friend, coworker, or teacher. This entire project took me less than one hour!

Here is a list of supplies you will need. You probably own most of these craft items already.

  • One (1) sheet of white cardstock (8.5x11 inches)
  • Circle punch that is larger than the gem's diameter (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Mod Podge® - Gloss
  • Foam rubber brush (to apply Mod Podge®)
  • Clear decor gems (found in your local craft store)
  • Magnetic buttons
  • Glue gun and glue sticks
  • Tin or container (optional)

We will be altering the clear decor gems by placing a patterned paper under them and adhering a magnet to the underside of the gem. Then, we will alter a container to hold the magnets for gift giving.

Open a new 8.5x11-inch document, with a white background, in your software editing program. For this project, I am using the:

  • Defining Moments Collection Biggie
  • Assemble Your Own Zoom Pages: Defining Moments
  • Defining Moments Paper Super Mini
  • Floral Moments Paper Super Mini

I used the Marquee Tool to mark 2x2-inch squares on my selected digital scrapbooking papers. Then, I simply dragged them onto my document using the Move Tool. You can layer embellishments on top of the background paper, use word art, or even create a mini layout for each magnet. Just use your imagination! I have made a total of 12 blocks on my paper because I am making 12 magnets.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Make one square for each magnet.

Please note that the decor gems are approximately 1 1/2 inches in diameter, so some of your mini layout/design will be cut off. Design your squares with those dimensions in mind or create smaller squares. (It is not necessary to have margins between the squares if you want to save paper and money.)

After you have completed your miniature designs, flatten your document and print it onto the white cardstock.

I have assembled all of my supplies.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Supplies needed.

My circle punch will not extend far from the edge of the paper, so I needed to cut my paper along the margins lengthwise into three pieces. Use the circle punch to punch a circle that is slightly larger than your decor gems. If you don't have a circle punch, just find something to use as a round template and trace around it with a pencil before cutting out your designs with scissors.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Cut a circle from each square.

Apply Mod Podge® to the flat side of the decor gems and then place them on top of the patterned paper. The patterned paper needs to be right side up so it shows through the decor gem.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Apply sealant to flat side of decor gem.

You will notice that the decor gems are not perfectly circular. When the Mod Podge® has dried, carefully trim the excess paper so it doesn't extend beyond the gem.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Trim excess paper.

You will now need to add another layer of Mod Podge® to the underside of the gems. Turn the gems upside down and apply a single layer of Mod Podge®.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Add another layer of glossy sealant.

When the Mod Podge® has dried, adhere a button magnet to the back of each gem using a glue gun.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Glue magnet to bottom.

If you have a tin container, it will be the perfect gift box for your magnets. I altered the tin to coordinate with the magnets. Think about making a hybrid gift box by adding a bow, flower, or tag to it. If you don't happen to have a tin container, use a glass jar, box, paper bag, or anything you happen to have. Or better yet, use one of the many craft templates found in the Scrap Girls Boutique to create your own matching gift box and card.

Here is a close-up of the completed magnets. Think how cute these could be with holiday themes!

I chose to go totally digital because I needed a quick and easy gift for today. Here is my completed project.

FEBRUARY EVENTS

February Message Board Game: Posting Contest!

It's that time again - Posting Contest time! This is where you are rewarded for your flying fingers and chattiness. The contest will run from February 1st when we post the thread to February 28th at 12:00 Midnight (MST). We are doing things a little differently this time and there are two ways to participate - the Message Board and the Gallery, so here are the rules:

1) To enter the Message Board Posting Challenge, reply in the game thread with your CURRENT post count. This is the number under your Avatar that shows when you post. Do not post the number found on your profile; it is a different number that is calculated differently. During the month, chat your fingers off! On February 28th, BEFORE Midnight (MST), go back to your original post in the game thread (the one with your starting post count) and take a screenshot of it. Send the screenshot to [email protected]. The screenshot is your contest entry! We will calculate your post count based on the numbers on the screenshot. (Directions for taking screenshots will be posted in the game thread.)

2) To enter the Gallery Posting Challenge, take a screenshot of your Gallery comment number and send it to [email protected] BEFORE February 1st, Midnight (MST). To get to your Gallery Stats, click the arrow beside your Profile photo and go down to Gallery. Your total comments number is under Stats on the left-hand side - this is what we need a screenshot of to know where you are starting. Then BEFORE Midnight (MST) on February 28th, take another screenshot of your Gallery Stats and send it to [email protected], this will give us your ending number and enter you in the contest!

PRIZES: You may enter both contests. Members with Message Board posts over 50 will be put in a drawing for a $5 Scrap Girls Gift Certificate. Members with Message Board posts over 200 will be put in a drawing for both the $5 Scrap Girls Gift Certificate and a $10 Scrap Girls Gift Certificate. Members with Message Board posts over 400 will be put in a drawing for a $15 Scrap Girls Gift Certificate, as well as the $5 and $10 Gift Certificates. Members with Gallery comments over 25 will be put in a drawing for $10 Scrap Girls Gift Certificate.

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.
