Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
For this layout, I really liked the recipe card template from ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Recipe Pages, so I decided to make a recipe card about relationships and family. I wanted to show how, like a well-loved recipe that gets used often, spilled on, creased and torn, a relationship gets better with time, despite all the rough edges, coffee stains, taped corners, and spills. To do that, I chose grungy elements, placed my elements at odd angles, and layered like crazy. Some of my favorite parts of this layout are the coffee stains. To make them look worn onto the paper, I made a new layer and then selected a brush from Brush Set: Watermark. Then, I simply stamped on the stains using a color from my photo as my foreground color. Then I changed the Blending Mode of the brush layer until it was pleasing. Lastly, I moved the brush layer so that it landed above my text layer, so it looks like the spill occurred after the typing was made on the card, just like a well-worn recipe card.

I loved the simple look of ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: Life - Everyday by Chere Kaye Edwards, but when I finished my layout it seemed like something was missing. Whenever I feel that way about a layout, I try adding some kind of border. It seems to complete the layout and bring everything together. You can accomplish this in a few ways. Here, I used ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Edgy, Thin to create a child like scribble around the edges that finish it off perfectly.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0

Journaling: I just had to write this down as my heart was filled with love for the two-year-old boy who just stepped on a cracker that he dropped on the rug. When he saw the cracker smithereens, he said, "It's a mess, Mama!" I said, "Yes, it's a mess." He replied, "I clean it up, Mama! We need a nakin (napkin)!" He ran over to the table, grabbed a three-inch stack of napkins, ran back to the rug, and proceeded to "wipe" up the cracker crumbs by scattering them every which way. Now that I have cracker droppings everywhere instead of just one spot, and more messes to clean up than I can clean in a week, I just have to kiss that boy's face!
One day he won't say "Kiss me, Mama!" or "Kiss my feet!" He won't put his hands on my face and say, "Mommy so cute!", nor will he say, "Thank you, Hot Baby!" when I hand him his dinner plate.
He won't dump shampoo all over our playroom, or powder the hardwood floors with white baby powder. He won't roar at me incessantly, and when I tell him he's too loud, he says he's a baby tiger.
He won't throw various and random things in the trash can for me to find later. There's no telling what has been lost to the trash truck. As I was writing this, I had to stop and rescue a sippy cup, all of the napkins from the kitchen table, a dry erase marker, and a couple pacifiers from the trash can. When I asked him why he did it, he said, "I clean the table, Mama!" He's so happy about his efforts, I can only smile and tell him thank you.
He won't run to the door with joy and excitement and say, "Mama's here, Mama's here!" He won't wake up from his nap with warm, rosy cheeks and snuggle with me for as long as I want while he holds his blankets (yes, I said blankets. He has three).
He won't smile his cute little smile at me every time I ask him to. He won't always look at me with those adoring blue eyes and say, "Wuv you, Mama." So, I'm going to sit down and do puzzles, and play cars, and read books to my little man, because he won't be little forever, and as Ryan wisely reminds me, he won't always want to do those things with me. I'm not even going to think about the cracker crumbs everywhere. Who cares about that when I have this handsome boy all to myself today? Yep. He's got my heart in his hands and to know him is to love him like crazy! Andrew Waveland McCabe: Age 2.5 October 2010

I used the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Pierced to add holes along the edge of the layout. There are three different papers in the background, so I duplicated the template layer twice and positioned a template layer under each paper layer. I adjusted the Blending Modes and found that "Multiply" gave the look I wanted without altering the colors on the two solid papers while the "Darken" mode gave the patterned paper a similar look.

I have a shortcut I love to use when creating strips of text. I type the first line, then hold the Shift key down, move my cursor to the next starting point of text and click the left mouse button, and continue on. It saves me time to not have to click on the checkmark up at the top each time I finish a line. Also, if you need to make changes to text, double-click in the thumbnail image in the Layers Palette, and it will highlight that area of text for you.

Journaling: Wild thing, you don't just play the air guitar, oh no... You play the armpit guitar! It's a wonder you don't tickle yourself and laugh while playing. :) Watching your funny antics is one of my biggest joys as a parent. Some days I think I should just walk around with a video camera going.

With this layout, I had the opportunity to play with the Blending Modes of the elements in the "Love" template from ScrapSimple Word Art Templates: Photo Words. For example, take the large green flower - once I decided on which paper I wanted to use, I clipped my paper to the flower (Ctrl+Alt+G) and then played with the Blending Mode to find the look I was going for. I used a combination of "Overlay" and/or "Soft Light" for the butterflies and flowers in that template.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make the denim in the layout look like the denim on my son's jeans, which are almost always wrinkled, I applied the wrinkled paper brush from Dynamic Brush Set: Textured 8201 to the layer above the paper. The brush color I used was black with the Blending Mode set to "Overlay." Next, I set the color to white and used a brush from Brush Set: Worn Threads to make the center section look worn, like the knees in a pair of jeans.

One of my favorite techniques for creating flow on my layouts is to scatter small embellishments along an imaginary path. On this layout, I added the pink and silver brads to my layout. Then I duplicated each brad several times and arranged them on the page. To create visual interest, I resized some of the brads. The end result is a subtle path for the eye to follow from the top of the page down to the bottom of the layout.
