ScrapSimple Digital Scrapbooking Embellishment Templates: Puzzled is so much fun! I love the way that this template gave my layout the feeling of a homemade valentine. When I decided to use this template, I was so excited to see that the entire heart is a single file, but each piece is also its own separate file. First, I brought in my photo and arranged it directly above my heart template. After I applied a clipping mask (Ctrl+G) to the photo and my photo was arranged and clipped onto the heart, I opened up the file where the pieces of the heart puzzle were stored. I selected a piece that wouldn't detract from my photo and added it to my layout. After positioning my puzzle piece over the photo, exactly where it would originally be (this is easy to do, because there are puzzle piece lines on your clipped photo), I duplicated my photo layer. I brought that duplicated layer to the layer above the single puzzle piece and applied a clipping mask to my photo layer, so that the photo was clipped to the single piece. Finally, I selected my single puzzle piece (Ctrl+Click the layer on the Layers Palette) until I saw the "marching ants" around my puzzle piece. The last step is to select the layer where the original photo is located and hit Delete. The exact cutout of the puzzle piece will be deleted. Now, it's up to you to move your piece where you'd like it to be located for a very fun puzzle effect!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
The double frame on the bottom shelf doesn't have a photo mask to clip my photos to. In order to get the photos to show perfectly within the frames without overlapping each other, I used my Magic Wand Tool. First, I made sure the frame layer was selected. Then with my Magic Wand Tool active, I clicked inside one of the frames where my photo would go. Next, I selected my photo layer and added a layer mask by clicking on the Layers Palette icon that looks like a box with a white circle in it. This automatically masked out everything outside of the selection I had made. Keep in mind that sometimes the selection isn't perfect. For example, with the scalloped frame, it has the shadow of the front frame in that area. To get around this problem, I made sure to Select> Modify> Expand my selection (in this case, I chose around 30 pixels; this number will be different depending on your selection. That's what’s so wonderful about the Undo feature!)

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
For this layout, I wanted to thread string through the holes in my alpha and word art. I placed my string on a layer above the word art layer. I needed to erase the part of the string that should appear below the word art, but I didn't want it to be meticulous work with a tiny eraser. I selected the word art layer by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on the layer thumbnail. This gave me "marching ants" around the entire perimeter of the element with the inside selected. Now with my string layer selected, I sized my eraser so that it was just between the holes, and clicked once. I didn't have to worry about erasing the string that should go through the holes, since that area wasn't selected. To finish it off, I used the Burn Tool on the string to darken the area around the holes, creating the look of a shadow.

Journaling: Bill and Jenn have an honesty in their relationship. They admit they aren't perfect, and they don't try to make others think they are. They each want their own way, they argue, they make mistakes. But they truly love each other, and they know that's the important thing. Truth and LOVE.

Brandie Valenzuela's Brush Set: Grungelle is my go-to brush for creating photo effects! First, I duplicated my photos and closed the originals. Next, I applied Melissa Renfro's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photo Basics PSE 5001 to each photo (using the Sepia with Color option). Then I layered the edited photos over the regular-colored photos and locked the layers. I selected my Eraser Tool, loaded the Brush Set: Grungelle and reduced the brush Opacity to 50%. I erased the cheeks of the edited photos so the natural blush of the cheeks would show. Then I increased the Opacity to 100% and erased the eyes of the edited photos so the real eye color would show.

I wanted to put the heart seal embellishment from ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Worn Seals onto the round tag from Pinned Tags Embellishment Mini. However, the lifted tag is not quite round which makes the round seal look awkward. To remedy this, I selected the seal layer and chose Edit> Transform> Warp from the top menu bar. Then I moved and adjusted the shape until the round seal edges more closely matched those of the tag.

With this layout, I had the opportunity to play with the Blending Modes of the elements in the "Love" template from ScrapSimple Word Art Templates: Photo Words. For example, take the large green flower - once I decided on which paper I wanted to use, I clipped my paper to the flower (Ctrl+Alt+G) and then played with the Blending Mode to find the look I was going for. I used a combination of "Overlay" and/or "Soft Light" for the butterflies and flowers in that template.

I chose a thin font (Orator Std) for my journaling, but even setting the font to "Bold" did not make it readable at the size that I wanted. What I did was to make duplicates of the text layer until I got level of boldness that I was happy with.

A quick way to create a multi-colored border is to use the Brush Tool. First, I selected a Square Brush. Then I opened the Brush Tool Palette and clicked on Brush Tip Shape. Next, I changed the Spacing until the individual squares of the brush tip began to separate. Here, the Spacing is set to 112%. Then, I brushed a straight line onto my layout and used the Paint Bucket Tool to fill each individual square with color. Since I wanted a border around the entire layout, I duplicated the layer three times and then merged them all together.
