To make my subject, Evan, stand out against the busyness of this layout, I used my Lasso Tool and carefully drew around him to extract him from a copy of each of the images. Then, one at a time, I added a stroke outline to each image. To do this, I selected the image layer by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette and then clicked on Edit> Stroke (Outline Selection), chose Width> 15 pixels, Color> White, and Location> Outside, Blending Mode> "Normal," Opacity> 100%, and finally clicked "OK." Now my cut-out images really take center stage!

Using Photoshop CS3, I achieved the circular blur on the photo by duplicating the photo layer. Then, on the top layer, I went to Filter> Blur> Radial Blur. You'll want to play with the settings. For my photo, I thought Amount: 10, Blur Method: Spin, and Quality: Good worked well. Again, on the top copy, I added a layer mask and painted in black (to hide the top layer) with a Soft Round Brush. I painted all over my husband and son to hide the top blurred layer and show the crisp layer beneath.

I take most of my photos without using a flash, and this particular photo is no exception. The lighting in the ballet studio wasn't enough to get a great shot of Mikaelynn warming up before class, and I was so tempted to delete this very blurry photo when I first imported it from the memory card. I'm glad I didn't because it ended up being the perfect shot to use for a layout about motion!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Adobe Lightroom 3

Journaling: Mikaelynn started taking ballet lessons with Miss Alicia about 4 months ago. Every Wednesday, she puts on a black leotard, pink tights and ballet slippers to warm up before class.

Journaling: After just learning how to walk, you enjoyed taking a stroll one August evening. You were very focused on the ground in front of you... I wonder what you were thinking.

I wanted an embellishment for my left page, top left-hand corner, but I didn't have anything that would work for my layout theme. So, I came up with a solution that I believe gives it that "embellishment" feeling, without a lot of fuss. I simply grabbed one of my photos and changed the Blending Mode to "Exclusion." A quick shadow, a little bit of resizing and placement, and I have a fun, funky, perfectly coordinated embellishment!

Journaling: This is one ride that Rachel and Spencer absolutely loved. They rode it over and over again. Sometimes with mom, sometimes with dad, and sometimes alone. Hooray for short lines!

When I saw that the challenge for this assignment was the theme of motion, this photo immediately came to my mind. I loved the picture as it was, but when I added ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photos That Pop PSE 1801, it really turned what was a pretty cool picture into a very stunning one, if I do say so myself! Experimenting with different actions can really make your photos and layouts quite unique. Give it a try!

Journaling: I took this picture at the South Carolina State Fair in October 2009. I had been practicing some new techniques with my camera, and I was really proud of this picture. It helped that the sky was unbelievably beautiful that night!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To achieve the look of the ribbon, I selected my ribbon layer (ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Ribbon Curls Biggie by Brandy Murry) and then added a Gradient Adjustment layer. I chose about six different colors from my layout for the gradient. Then I selected the adjustment layer, clipped it to the ribbon using a clipping mask (Ctrl+Alt+G in Photoshop, Ctrl+G in Photoshop Elements), and then I played with the Blending Modes until I found one I liked. In this case, I liked "Overlay" best. It still needed a little something, so I placed a file from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: InstanTexture Biggie by Melanie Johnson above the gradient adjustment layer, clipped it to the ribbon layer and played with the Blending Modes again, this time choosing "Color Burn." Now my ribbon has the intensity of color I was looking for.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
The photo was already slightly blurry because I took it as I was walking. But to further give the impression of motion, I used a blur filter. From the top menu of Photoshop Elements, I chose Filter> Blur> Radial Blur. From the dialog box that came up, I chose the settings Amount: 10, Blur Method: Zoom, Quality: Good. I used the same settings on a copy of the background paper that I used. The blurred copy of the paper is clipped to one of the paper templates in ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Bursting Offset, which I also blurred using a Gaussian blur. Blurring the template removed the hard edges, which made it blend better into the background paper.
