Create a Monthly Menu Computer Desktop Wallpaper

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS2 with Windows Vista.

How often do you find yourself saying "What's for dinner tonight?" It seems to be a common question that comes up from 3:00-6:00 p.m. in many homes. Life gets busy, and we just don't get around to planning this main meal of the day. Before you know it, your family is hungry, and you might find yourself frantically searching the cupboards or ordering a pizza (again).

While I can't come to your home and cook dinner for you, and creating a menu plan that every Scrap Girls Newsletter reader could use might be a bit of a challenge, I do have an idea for you that can make menu planning a bit more fun: Create a monthly menu computer wallpaper with digital scrapbooking supplies!

First, you'll want to set aside some time to create a monthly menu. My advice is to make a big list of the meals that your family enjoys. Then, if you wish, look through recipe blogs, cooking magazines, or your recipe file box to find some new ideas to add to your list.

Next, select an Assemble Your Own Desktop Wallpaper from the Scrap Girls Boutique. There are several available, so select one that appeals to you. While you can create your own computer desktop wallpaper from other digital scrapbooking kits, I like the AYO Computer Wallpaper products because they are super simple to use. For my project, I have chosen Assemble Your Own Desktop Wallpapers: Warmth and Assemble Your Own Desktop Wallpapers: Air Mail.

Follow the Assemble Your Own Desktop Wallpaper instructions found in the Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Instructions Handbook to determine the size of your computer monitor display. My laptop has a display size of 1280x800, so according to the instructions in the Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Instructions Handbook, I need to select the 3360x2100-pixel background from Assemble Your Own Desktop Wallpapers: Warmth because this size will be able to be proportionately resize to my monitor size. Each Scrap Girls Assemble Your Own Desktop Wallpaper comes with three background sizes to make it easy, so I opened the 3360x2100 in Photoshop.

Next, create your desktop wallpaper similar to how you create other digital scrapbooking layouts. My laptop desktop has a few important computer icons on the left side of my screen, so my plan is to leave the left side without many embellishments. However, I do most of my design on the right side and on the bottom. Using ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates - Calendar: Perpetual, you can add the Date Lines to your background (this set also comes with handwritten lines if you prefer a different look); resize as necessary. This is where you will type your monthly list of dinners.

Next, type in your menu plan and then save your desktop wallpaper as a PSD file (so you can easily edit it later).

If necessary, resize your wallpaper as explained in the Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Instructions Handbook. Since my monitor resolution is 1280x800 pixels, I need to resize to 1280x800px. After resizing, I saved it as a JPG (I kept it at 300 dpi with a quality of 10).

Now it's ready to install on your desktop. If you aren't sure about how to do this, we offer instructions in our special Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Instructions Handbook for both PC and Mac users. Here is my final wallpaper. Since I saved it as a PSD file, I can easily return to my desktop wallpaper and edit the menu and embellishments each month. While I can't guarantee that this will make menu planning easy, it is a fun way to keep track of meals for the month – and it's pretty to look at!

January Message Board Game: Jumpstart January!

Join us on the Message Board this month for "Jumpstart January!" This is a Message Board game and challenge to start your year with fun and focus on taking time to scrapbook regularly despite the little speedbumps of life. When the month is over, you'll have completed several layouts and been challenged and treated to some fun along the way.

A member of the Welcoming Committee will post a mini-challenge/task every day from January 1-30 in the Games folder on the Message Board. Check out the game thread titled "January Jumpstart 2011" for complete details and rules.

Those who complete all tasks and submit or post required participation by 11:59pm MT on January 31st will be entered in a drawing to win one of three $10 Gift Certificates to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Those who complete just the layouts will be entered in a separate drawing to win one of three $5 gift certificates. (Those who complete all tasks will have their name entered in both drawings!) Winners will be announced in the newsletter on Saturday, February 5th.

January Monthly Layout Contest: Now that the snow is flying in some parts of the world, we are focusing on staying warm! For the January Layout Contest, we'd love to see what you do to stay warm! Do you have a favorite blanket or sweater? Or is there a family favorite comfort food you turn to in the winter? Let's scrap the photos and stories that help keep us warm! Post your layouts in the January Gallery before Midnight MT on January 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties.
