I wanted Ariadna Wiczling's ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Bead Spill to have depth and a variety of colors. I applied Brandy Murry's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Sequin Sparkle 8501 Super Biggie and ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Sequin Sparkle-Gradients 8501 Super Biggie to achieve this effect quickly and easily!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0

Journaling: No doubt, Rah, Marissa, and I are cut from the same cloth! Not only do we share a family resemblance, but our perspectives are very much alike. We like to cook good food, dance, and find humor in just about anything. Most of all, we share a great love for family and spending time together. Thanksgiving 2010

I have a favorite keyboard shortcut for creating multiple lines of text. When I reach the end of a line of text, I hold down the Shift key and click at the beginning of the next line I wish to create. This begins a new layer. It speeds up the process when I cannot use a text box, such as this layout with the brushed-on lines that curve alongside the hearts embellishment.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

Journaling: Floyd Chester & Helen Stender were married in 1940 at his parents' farm near Cumberland, Iowa. They met in high school through Floyd's sister, Opal. Both came from large families with only one son. They had five children of their own.

Did you know that the Dynamic Brushes make great single brushes? On this layout, I used Ariadna Wiczling's Dynamic Brush Set: Variae Formae 8201, but I just stamped it once to create the flower grouping in the bottom left-hand corner of my dandelion photo. Then I added a felt style to make the brush "pop" – such an easy way to make a great embellishment!

Our challenge for this assignment was to do an 8.5x11-inch layout. Once I saw Ariadna Wiczling's adorable animals from her Little Friends Collection Mini and Little Zoo Collection, I knew that I wanted to do something a little different. Since I homeschool my children, I decided to use all those cute little animals to make a worksheet of "Wild and Crazy" word problems. My daughter loves animals and says she wants to be a zookeeper when she grows up, so she loved her special math work. Those darling animals were a great motivator!

- There are 8 monkeys jumping on a trampoline. Two monkeys slip on some banana peels and fall to the ground. How many monkeys are left on the trampoline?
- Five roller-skating giraffes are speeding down the driveway. One giraffe's mommy calls him home to supper. How many skating giraffes are left?
- A zebra named Zeb was gathering flowers. He picked 2 daisies, 4 roses, and 1 lily. How many flowers did he pick in all?

To change the paper template from a 12x12-inch ratio to 8.5x11 inches, I used the Rectangular Marquee Tool to separate the top and bottom portions. Once I had the upper portion selected, I placed the selection on a new layer. I used Command+Shift+J to do this quickly. The menu selections would be Layer> New> Layer via Cut. This enabled me to fit my photo between the borders. When I was finished placing my photo, I merged the layers of the paper template back together.

There was a part of the paper roses embellishment from The Good Life Collection positioned behind the angel from Assemble Your Own: Angel Pins Biggie. I didn't care for how that looked. To correct this, I used the Marquee Tool to select the area of the paper roses that I wanted to move. Then I right-clicked and chose "Layer via Cut." That put the problematic section on a separate layer, and I just moved it over to a more pleasing location.

To color the ScrapSimple chalk piece from Caroline Kaiser's ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Chalk Borders, I followed some easy steps. First, I set my desired color as my foreground color. Then I made sure my chalk layer was selected, and I clicked on the "Create Adjustment Layer" icon (the black and white circle) at the top of my Layers Palette. Next, I chose "Solid Color" from the drop-down menu. Then I created a clipping mask using Ctrl+G. Finally, I played around with the Blending Modes until I found my desired look. On this particular layout, I chose "Color" as my Blending Mode. To make my chalk piece even more realistic, I added a drop shadow using Sarah Batdorf's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Basic Shadows 6501.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted my layout to have a border. Using a simple one - like "Cut Out" from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Basically Bordered Squares 2 - made adapting it to an 8.5x11-inch digital scrapbook layout very easy. When I dragged the paper to my layout from my Photo Bin, it automatically sized itself to the smallest dimension of my work space, so I ended up with a nice 8.5x8.5-inch square. (Placing it on your layout via File> Place will have the same effect.) Next, I duplicated it by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette and clicking Ctrl+J (Layer> New> Layer via Copy). Then I moved one layer so that it lined up with the bottom of my layout and the other so that it lined up with the top of my layout. Next, I selected the two layers by clicking on their thumbnail images in the Layers Palette while holding down my Ctrl key and clicked Ctrl+E to merge just those two layers together. Because my set of three photos landed on top of where the two layers merged, I didn't have to worry about any overlapping edges showing up. Finally, I added a shadow from ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Basic Shadows 6501 to the ScrapSimple Paper layer and clipped my blue paper to it. I think this simple addition to my layout gives it the perfect finishing touch!
