It's Not Over Until It's Over

I heard her voice coming from the labor room next to me. In the last stages of labor, she panicked and began to scream, "Let me out of here! Give me my clothes. I can't do this. I'm going home."

The tone of her voice made it obvious that she was serious; she thought she had the choice to leave.

But, of course, she couldn't go home. She had decided months ago to have a baby and now she had to deliver her child.

Sometimes, we are like my labor room neighbor. We discover that we chose something that takes gumption to get through. It is better, during those experiences, to grit our teeth and keep our eyes on the end of the race.

Sometimes we win and get our prize. Sometimes we merely gain wisdom about making better choices. But until we get in there and see it to completion, we will remain stuck.

Eventually, my labor room neighbor went to the delivery room where she pushed out a beautiful baby. My guess is that she is now happy that she had to finish the job that brought her such a wonderful gift.

How to Create Double-Sided and Ripped Digital Scrapbook Paper

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS5 with Mac OS X.

There is a fun product in the Boutique that allows you to create papers that look like they have actually been crumpled, then ripped and rolled. Because they are ScrapSimple products, you can customize the color to match any digital scrapbooking layout you are working on. There is an easy way to get the torn edge to be a different color than the paper color, just like a real paper when you tear it.

First, open a new document and bring in a paper of your choosing from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Ripped and Rolled. This tutorial starts with paper number 6.

Drag in the template to a new document. Next, duplicate the layer. You will now have two copies of this grey paper - one right on top of each other. Link these layers so that if you move them they will stay together. Do this by selecting both layers in the Layers Palette, and with a right mouse click, select "Link Layers."

If you haven't used a ScrapSimple product before, you can see that they start out grey. An easy way to color these papers is to select a color with the Color Picker or Eye Dropper Tool from a photo that you want to use.

Once you have selected a color for your paper, then go to the pull-down menu and select Image> Adjustments> Hue and Saturation.

You will see a box in the lower right-hand side of this dialogue box. Click the "Colorize" box. The paper will turn green. You can slide the Saturation slider to the right to make the color brighter. You can also adjust the Hue by moving that slider left or right.

Now the paper is green. You may easily lighten or darken the paper to match your photos. This looks nice, but it would be better if the torn edge weren't just a lighter shade of green than the paper. Let's change it.

Go to the bottom right of your screen and click the visibility eye of this layer and reveal the grey layer below. Click the Layers Palette to activate the grey layer and then colorize it by repeating the steps you used to color the top layer green. This example uses yellow.

Turn the green layer visibility back on and click on the green layer to activate it. In Photoshop CS3 or higher, you may use the Magic Selection Tool, or in other versions, use the Magic Wand Tool in your tool box. Select the torn edge of paper, holding down the Shift key until the entire torn edge is outlined with the "marching ants."

When the entire torn edge is selected, hit the Delete key.

This will delete the green edge and reveal the yellow torn edge from the layer below. In the next image, you see that you now have a beautiful torn edge in a contrasting color. You have also created a clipping mask if you want to add a texture or patterned paper to your torn paper.

In the next example, a different torn sheet was added and colorized. To add a pattern, simply bring a patterned paper onto your digital scrapbooking layout. Using a right click on your mouse on the Layers Palette will reveal an additional set of options. Select "Create Clipping Mask," and your patterned paper will clip to the shape of the torn paper below it. In this sample, the Blending Mode was turned to "Soft Light" and the Opacity reduced to 58 percent. Look how natural and beautiful the torn papers look.

Notice how realistic your papers look. Now they are nothing like the single-colored grey papers that you started with. Once you have completed coloring your papers or adding textures, merge the layers and add a drop shadow. With just a few clicks, you have quickly and easily created ripped and rolled papers to match any project.

During the holidays, I received a card from my neighbors, and the pictures were so great that I didn't want to throw them away. I just had to create a layout for them with the pictures. Their two adorable daughters are so thrilled to have a new baby sister that the journaling is from their perspective.

Here is the finished layout using ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Ripped and Rolled. You can see that these papers work well stacked one on top of the other to create places to tuck photos or embellishments. What a fast and easy way to tear papers with no paper cuts required. Have fun and tear away!

January Message Board Game: Jumpstart January!

Join us on the Message Board this month for "Jumpstart January!" This is a Message Board game and challenge to start your year with fun and focus on taking time to scrapbook regularly despite the little speedbumps of life. When the month is over, you'll have completed several layouts and been challenged and treated to some fun along the way.

A member of the Welcoming Committee will post a mini-challenge/task every day from January 1-30 in the Games folder on the Message Board. Check out the game thread titled "January Jumpstart 2011" for complete details and rules.

Those who complete all tasks and submit or post required participation by 11:59pm MT on January 31st will be entered in a drawing to win one of three $10 Gift Certificates to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Those who complete just the layouts will be entered in a separate drawing to win one of three $5 gift certificates. (Those who complete all tasks will have their name entered in both drawings!) Winners will be announced in the newsletter on Saturday, February 5th.

January Monthly Layout Contest: Now that the snow is flying in some parts of the world, we are focusing on staying warm! For the January Layout Contest, we'd love to see what you do to stay warm! Do you have a favorite blanket or sweater? Or is there a family favorite comfort food you turn to in the winter? Let's scrap the photos and stories that help keep us warm! Post your layouts in the January Gallery before Midnight MT on January 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties.
