When creating a holiday layout, don't feel confined to using holiday-themed collections. I associate New Year's with feelings of happiness, excitement, and fun, so I used Sheri Johnson's Cabana Paper Solids and SummerTime Collection. Although these supplies are geared towards summer-themed layouts, they allowed me to create a bright and fun layout perfect for New Year's.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS4
Name of challenge: Create a layout about your New Year's resolutions.

Journaling: I don't make resolutions every year. I don't see anything wrong with them, but honestly, I just forget some years. Since it's on my mind, this year I do have specific resolutions. First and foremost, I resolve to become more organized. I am not "born organized" so this is always a work-in-progress for me. I also resolve to take more photos. I want to become a better photographer, so the best way to do that is to start snapping. Lastly, I resolve to remain optimistic. Most of the time, we focus on eliminating our negative qualities, but I think it's equally important to preserve the best thing about ourselves.

I wanted to use the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Lifted Journal Strips Super Biggie, but I wanted more strips in my list. I combined two of the templates by dragging all the layers from the two PSD files into my layout. I made sure I had both the strip and its shadow selected as I rearranged the strips to get a longer, balanced set.

Who says you to have a photo to scrapbook? I spent hours online trying to find the perfect truffle picture with a high resolution that wasn't going to cost me money to purchase. I thought I found one and started scrapping away. But I wasn't too happy with my results and decided to remove the photo and make Sheri Johnson's Digital Stickers: HoneyPie my focal point. I loved the change. It made my layout so fun and playful!

Journaling: I want to learn how to make fantastic truffles. And in 2011, I will!

For this assignment, we were supposed to scrap about our New Year's resolutions. I don't usually make resolutions, because I don't keep them. Ever. But one thing that the New Year brings to mind is keeping a positive attitude. And what better way to remind myself of this than a desktop calendar with a different happy quote for each month! The bright colors and "make lemonade" word art from Sheri Johnson's Tropical Fruit Collection Biggie were perfect to use for the month of June.

I wanted to use the clock face from Celebration Station Embellishment Biggie, but it has a white background (behind the numbers and hands) that seemed too bright for this layout. I decided to change the white to part of a paper from Twilight Magic Collection Biggie. I set the Magic Wand Tool to a tolerance of 50 and made sure "Contiguous" was checked. Then I clicked on the white areas of the clock face so that the selection had the "marching ants" around it. I put the selected area on its own layer by hitting Ctrl+J. Then I turned off the "marching ants" by hitting Ctrl+D. I filled the new layer with color (any color will do) using the Paint Bucket Tool. Above this layer, I placed the paper I wanted to use and clipped it to the layer below using Ctrl+G. Now the white clock face has been changed to a color that matches the layout.

One technique that's sure to add movement to your layout is to add swirls. Here, I used ScrapSimple Transparency Overlays: Julie. I also amplified that movement by adding some papers from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Flecked.

In order to blend the two background papers together, I added a photo mask to the top layer. I clicked once on the photo mask thumbnail in the Layers Palette to make it active. Then I chose the Gradient tool, and in the Options bar up top, I chose "Black to White Gradient, Linear." Then I drew several strokes diagonally from the lower right to the middle left until I had fine-tuned the amount of the bottom paper that showed through the mask.

Journaling: My big resolution for 2011 is to have more fun as a family. Not necessarily big money let's get on a plane and go somewhere for several thousand dollars kind of fun, but more of the everyday variety. Make the mundane fun with little rhymes, make more small trips to local attractions, sing more songs at home, dance more dances at home. Actually move the piano here from Dave & Pauline's and play it. Play more board games. Play more card games. Play hide-and-seek. Bake, even though I detest the process, because the end result and happy children are worth the trouble. Now don't get me wrong - I would certainly not shun a trip to a beautiful tropical location. To create the scattered glitter across the bottom of the page, I placed several copies of the sprig embellishment from Sheri Johnson's Twilight Magic Collection Biggie on the page. Then I applied a different color of Amanda Sok's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Loose Glitter 6401 Super Biggie to each sprig. Finally, I simplified the layers and reduced the Opacity until the effect suited the layout.

I thought that this would be a great wall hanging in my laundry room. I wanted something quirky, fun, cute, and decorative – and I think the combination of elements in this layout is so perfect for eye-catching wall décor. Keeping it simple was my main goal with this layout.

I love playing with paper templates with my layouts. For this layout, I added a paper from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Art of Love, but I wanted it to blend in with my background paper and not overwhelm it, so I lowered the Opacity to 40% to get the look I was after.

Journaling: To stop worrying about the things I can't control, to enjoy the many blessings God has given to me, and to live in the present moment.
