Have you ever noticed that prayers are sometimes answered in unusual ways? The night before I found the tag containing this bit of wisdom on the floor, I had been on my knees begging for forgiveness for an enormous laundry list of flaws. I felt overcome with my inability to improve because most of the issues seemed to be associated with my personality. Changing your personality is hard – if not impossible.

The assurance I needed had fallen off some unknown garment. Since I hadn't purchased clothing for some time, I had no idea how it came to be placed in my path as I walked across my bathroom floor.

I believe it was placed there by some unseen hand. "Your occasional slubs, inconsistencies, and gentle shadows are inherent to your nature," the tag instructed. "They should not be regarded as defects. They are characteristic of the fine fabric, which gives your soul its beauty and dramatic texture."

A prayer had been answered and, once again, I was assured that I am loved and understood - even in my imperfect state.

Adjusting Separate Shadow Layers

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS5 with Windows XP.

When it comes to life and digital scrapbooking, I consider myself pretty lucky. I have the privilege of working in a field I love, surrounded by a team of talented and imaginative coworkers - many of whom I regard as dear friends. What's not to like about that?

Plenty of Scrap Girls devotees are lucky, too, when it comes to finding little goodies tucked into their product files; unzipping their folders to uncover layout samples, or color palettes, or a separate drop shadow layer for those tricky dimensional embellishments. What a treat to realize a designer has saved me the trouble of masking out portions of a peek-a-boo element or figured out how to make a twisted ribbon look like it pops off the page. On these occasions, the shadow in question often appears in a nice safe gray - the digital equivalent of Switzerland - to apply to most color situations. But how do you, as a digital scrapbooker, make adjustments to a pre-saved shadow layer when it honestly doesn't work? Well, friends, let me show you how.

Here I've included the Flower2-Red from my Loverly Collection Biggie and its shadow layer on my layout. I'll be adjusting the shadow on the left and using the other one as the baseline.

If you have used File> Place to add the shadow layer onto your canvas or it is a Smart Object, Rasterize or simplify your layer before continuing.

A quick note about shadows: When they occur naturally, the color is determined by the surface it falls upon, not the object casting it; and unless the surface the shadow falls on is reflective, the originating object's color is not seen at all. More simply, a red block on a green paper will have a green shadow; a red block on a yellow paper will have a yellow shadow. The darker the color of the background paper, the darker the color of the shadow.

In the first screen shot, you can see the dark gray Flower2-Red_shadow layer is too dark for white and green of Angie Briggs’s Daily Quote – Xmas Word Art Mini (All I Want).

Using the Eyedropper Tool (I), I chose the green from Angie's word art and made it slightly darker. This was my starting point for the shadow color.

In the Layers Palette, I selected the MAD_Loverly_Emb_Flower2-Red_shadow layer and clicked on the "Lock Transparent Pixels" icon which preserves the opaque portions of the layer. I could now see a padlock icon on my layer. Later, if I wanted to undo this, I could select this layer again and click the icon to unlock it.

Note: In Photoshop Elements, the Lock Transparent Pixels icon is along the bottom of the Layers Palette.

To change the color of the shadow, I used Alt+Delete (Opt+Delete on a Mac). Because the pixels were locked, only the portions of the layer that were part of the shadow accepted any color.

Now I've made the final adjustments to the shadow by selecting the Blending Mode: "Linear Burn" and making my Fill 55%.

You can see in the screenshot above how the left flower now has a softer, more natural-looking shadow compared to the original, harsh gray one on the right.

When looking for options, you might try the "Multiply," "Color Burn," and "Overlay" Blending Modes as well as changing the shadow layer's Opacity.

You may also find the need to make a pre-made shadow layer darker, and this technique works very well for that situation. Alternatively, you might simply make a copy of the shadow layer - essentially doubling its strength in one step - and see if that will quickly fill your needs.

A Sweet December Challenge!

During the month of December, all chats and challenges will be a little sweeter. Each time you attend a chat and post a layout for the chat's challenge or post a layout for a Message Board challenge, you will be entered into a weekly drawing for a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

To participate, upload a layout to the Message Board Gallery and post a link to your layout in the corresponding Message Board thread by Saturday at Midnight MT. Each week, the Welcoming Committee will compile all of the participating names and do a random drawing for the $10 Gift Certificate. That's right - ONE $10 Gift Certificate for EACH WEEK of December! Winners will be announced in the following Saturday's Newsletter.

December Message Board Game: BINGO!

Join us for an exciting game of Holiday BINGO on the Message Board Forum in December! Pick 25 words from the list provided and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Friday, December 3rd (Midnight MST) in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Saturday, December 4th. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.

Each day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.

Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

Layout Contests:

December Monthly Layout Contest: For this month's contest we want you to scrap a layout using a Christmas carol or Hanukkah song as inspiration. You can use just the title or include some of the verses. If the song has a particular memory or meaning for you, journal about that. Share with us a favorite holiday song. Post your layouts in the December Gallery before Midnight MT on December 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery.
