LIFE MUSES BY RO

Rozanne Paxman
Rozanne Paxman

Be Brave and Tug!

It was always there - itching and burning and bothering me. I didn't know why this particular incision was taking so much longer to heal than I expected it to. I also didn't know why I couldn't stop catching every virus that came into the vicinity. Maybe I was just being impatient, but after two months of feeling lousy, I wanted to feel better so I could move on. I finally decided to go to an acupuncturist to see if she could help.

After describing my pain to her, she asked to look at my incision. As soon as she saw it, she exclaimed, "You still have a stitch in there!"

Shocked, I asked, "Are you sure? Maybe it is a scar."

She shook her head. "No, I'm looking at a black thread with a knot in it."

I couldn't believe my ears. This was the second time a stitch was found since the doctor had "removed" the stitches after a recent surgery. The first stray stitch was discovered when my husband and I had been trying to determine why the wound wasn't healing properly and why I had an infection. Gary pulled it out and the site got well. But we overlooked this second stitch because we hadn't looked hard at the other side of the wound and missed it.

I asked the acupuncturist to pull it out for me, and to her credit, she tried. But it didn't want to slip out easily, and as she didn't want to hurt me, she stopped. I didn't know what to do as I was away from home on business, and my husband wasn't available to help.

The acupuncturist finished inserting the needles for the treatment and then left me in the room to rest. I did what anyone would do under such circumstances; I fell asleep.

I began to dream about the bicycle I had received for Christmas when I was eight. It was a purple banana-seat wonder and came complete with streamers and a basket. I loved my bike and rode it everywhere.

The dream started out wonderfully. I could feel the wind on my face as I rode. I could see my old neighborhood. I could hear the sound of the gravel crunch under my wheels as I streaked up the street. Suddenly, I remembered why I had scars on my knees. One day, I hit a big patch of gravel and tumbled over, getting rocks inside the skin over my kneecaps.

When I came crying at the front door, my mother and grandmother consulted together and determined that someone would have to remove the rocks. (In those days, children didn’t go to doctors for such events. Instead, the closest adult to the child administered first aid.) My mother tried to remove them, but I screamed and wiggled away. Next, my grandmother attempted to remove them, but after she saw that she, too, would fail, she announced that I would have to take them out myself. I took the tweezers willingly, reasoning that at least I could feel where the skin ended and the kneecap began. After my fishing expedition was over, a small mound of gravel sat on the table.

My grandmother beamed at me. “You are so tough," she said. "I don't think I've seen a child as brave as you are."

I felt so proud of myself. I had done something hard and had succeeded.

As soon as this memory ran through my dream, I knew what I needed to do. I needed to pull the stitch out myself.

After I went back to my room, I collected my tweezers and fingernail clippers and went to work. It wasn't easy as the skin had partially grown over the knot. I almost gave up partway through the procedure, thinking that I might have to give up and find a doctor to help me.

But then, my grandmother's voice came to me. "You're tough. You can do this."

I nodded. Yes, I could do it. It was only one stitch.

I grunted and stretched and squirmed. I poked and prodded and pulled. I gritted my teeth and, at last, the foreign object came out. I was free!

Life is like that sometimes. We occasionally find that we have something or someone to remove from our lives. We must remove the stitch or the sore will continue to hurt and ooze. Removing it isn't easy, but once we've finished, we feel relief and pride in ourselves that we were brave enough to do it. We are free to heal. We are free to start over again. We are simply free.

DIGITAL SCRAPBOOKING TUTORIAL

Using ScrapSimple Styles with ScrapSimple Paper Templates

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS5 with Mac OS X.

There are so many ways to create gorgeous digital scrapbooking papers using one ScrapSimple Style set and one ScrapSimple Paper Template.

I have chosen to use paper template number 1 from the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Holiday Time and a red glitter style from the ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Micro Glitter 6401 Super Biggie.

Open the paper template you have chosen to use.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Open paper template.

Load your chosen glitter style by opening the Styles Palette and clicking on the drop-down arrow at the top right. Choose "Load Styles" and browse on your computer to select the glitter style.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Load styles.

Make sure your paper template layer is selected if it isn't the only layer in your working file. Now press Alt while clicking on the paper template's thumbnail in the Layers Palette. This will select the image on that layer. Go to Select> Inverse. This will select the negative area of the image layer.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Create selection and inverse.

Create a new blank layer above the paper template layer by clicking on the "Create New Layer" button at the bottom of the Layers Palette. Turn off the paper template layer by clicking on the eye icon to the left of it. Fill that new layer with any color by pressing Ctrl+Delete (Cmd+Delete on a Mac). This will fill the negative area of the paper template in the newly created layer above it.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Add a color-fill layer.

Apply the glitter style by making sure the new layer is selected and clicking on the style of your choice in the Styles Palette.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Apply layer style to color-fill layer.

Create a new layer and move it below the layer to which you just added the style. Choose a color for your background and fill it by pressing Ctrl+Delete (Cmd+Delete on a Mac).

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Add a background color layer.

To add texture to your background layer, you can drag and drop a textured paper template over the top of it and experiment with Blending Modes. I chose to use template number 5 from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Eroded. I settled on "Color Burn" for a Blending Mode with 85% Fill.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Add a texture layer.

Now you have an incredible paper template with gorgeous color and texture created in minutes!

NOVEMBER EVENTS

November Message Board Game: Spotlight on the Gallery!

Each day during November (except Sunday and Thanksgiving), a member of the Welcome Committee will post a layout in the Monthly Message Board Games forum in the official game thread. The layout will correspond with a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique, and the featured layout will always be the sample layout that is placed on the right side of the product image in the Boutique. A spotlight circle will show a portion of the layout you are to search for. If the layout is not identified by the following morning, a second spotlight circle will be added to the layout, and this will be repeated until the product is identified.

To participate, simply search the Boutique for the spotlighted layout, then post a link to the product page in the official game thread. The winning member's name will be drawn from all the members that correctly identify a product throughout the month. The winner will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.

The winner will be announced in the Newsletter on Saturday, December 4th.

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.

Layout Contests:

November Monthly Layout Contest: With the harvest done in most northern hemisphere countries at this time of the year, our forefathers (and mothers) thought it was a good time to take stock of the blessings that they had in their lives. For this month's contest, we want you to do a layout about the blessings in your life whether it is family, friends, your job, or just life in general. Post your layouts in the November Gallery before Midnight MT on November 30th. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Stop! Before you unsubscribe... Did you know we have a Weekly Round-Up newsletter?

This action-packed newsletter is sent out on Tuesday afternoons and summarizes what has happened in the past week. It's perfect for people who feel that they are too busy to read the daily editions! If you would like to receive our Round Up Newsletter, scroll to the bottom of this email and use the "Update Profile/Email Address" option to join the Round Up list and/or change your subscription options to our newsletters.

Of course, the Weekly Round Up Newsletter contains a fresh, new freebie, so even if you like to get the daily newsletters, you might want to join the Weekly Round-Up Newsletter, too. It's a great way to keep track of all of the fun things you are learning!
