ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Background Blenders are great for blending papers and large photos together to create a unique look. For this layout, I chose a light brown background paper from Childhood Memories Collection Biggie and then placed one of the papers from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Background Blenders on top of it. Next, I chose a large photo, placed it on the layer above the Background Blender paper, and applied the black-and-white action from ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Vintage PSE 6502 Mini. In order to make the photo blend, I selected its layer by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette and clicked Ctrl+G (Layer> Group with Previous). The edges of my photo were now blending nicely into the background, but its black-and-white color was still too strong. To blend it further, I selected the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Background Blenders layer by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette and then scrolled through the Blending Modes, located at the top of the Layers Palette. I chose to use "Soft Light" which made my photo take on the color and texture of the light brown background paper. Now my main photo, the one in the top right corner, is prominent, while the larger photo is a unique background paper.

I wanted some added interest underneath the journaling. I placed the blue flower from Melanie Johnson's Eclectic Collection Biggie under the journaling layer. First, I tried each Style included in Ariadna Wiczling's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Blended 8201 Super Biggie to determine which helped it blend-in the best. Then I turned down the Opacity to really make the embellishment subtle.

Journaling: With my bright red hair I tend to be drawn to similarly loud and fun colors in my clothing, though I have my fair share of neutrals in my closet as well. This home brought me my life-long dream of a walk-in-closet, which I have organized by dress clothes versus casual, and ROYGBV order. If I were richer, perhaps I'd indulge in a few more trendy clothes, but I do like my fare from Target, Eddie Bauer, and even (gasp) Goodwill. I do love a good bargain, though will not spend inordinate amounts of time looking for one. I wouldn't have the faintest idea where to shop in a large city. Someone would have to show me. Actually, that would be fun to have a (free) personal shopper to show me the things that would look best on me and help find bargains. :) If it's not comfortable, you won't find me wearing it! I was so sad when The Savvy Shopper closed here in Ames. It was a small, locally-owned outlet store on Main Street and had SUPER trendy clothing at deep discounts because it was the last of its kind, or a sample, or whatever. God I loved that place and most of my “modern” dress clothes and many of my favorite casual clothes came from there. My favorite is my pair of lime green Italian suede mules. Jewelry - don't get me started. After no jewelry purchases for at least ten years, I went wild after being invited to a Premier Designs, and later, a Silpada jewelry party. LOVE my lime green jewelry (complete with ring).

In this layout, I chose to modify the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: My Blessings by erasing (E) the word things. I also wanted to straighten the word grateful. To do this, I duplicated the layer twice. I turned off the visibility of my original layer, but wanted it there just in case I messed up and needed to start over. With one of the duplicated layers, I used the Lasso Tool (L) to cut out the word grateful. And with the other duplicated layer, I erased the word. Then I was able to straighten the word grateful, without impacting the rest of the template. Once I was happy with its placement, I merged the two duplicated layers.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
For this assignment, I wanted to make a mat to place under the stack of photos. I thought the paper from Naturalist's Journal Collection Biggie was the perfect color, but the size was too big for my layout. Using the Rectangular Marquee Tool, I selected the portion of the paper that I wanted to use. Being sure to be on the paper layer, I hit Ctrl+I (the letter i) which inversed my selection. Then I hit Delete - and I have a perfectly-sized, made-to-order mat for my layout. Next, I highlighted the mat layer and selected the Burn Tool set with Opacity to about 45%. Finally, using a Soft Grungy Brush, I burned in the edges of the mat gently to soften the edges, make it more realistic, and give the mat a little more depth.

I wanted to use ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Dirty Press Retro Inks 5401 Biggie on the flower and swirl from Brush Set: Swirls and Flowers Biggie. The color I needed was not included in the style set, so I had to tweak it to make it the color I wanted. First, I applied one of the Style choices. Then I simplified the layer to lock-in the look of the Style. Next, I used the Eyedropper Tool to pull the green color from the other flowers from Eclectic Collection Biggie. I went to Enhance> Adjust Color> Adjust Hue/Saturation and clicked on the "Colorize" box. I needed to adjust the Saturation slider to make the color show up better. Now I have the style I wanted and in the color I wanted.

In order to make the photos appear to be attached more realistically in the scrapbook, I went to Image> Transform> Distort. Then I distorted the pictures slightly until I got the look that I wanted. It just adds a bit more realism to my layout!

Journaling: At the beginning of September, Ryan and I talked about wanting to do some camping as a family. He has taken the girls a couple of times, but since we have always had a baby around for 6 years, it's been hard for all of us to go. We thought that if we had a pop-up camper it might be easier for us to do it more often. Well, after looking at a lot of pop-up campers we quickly realized you could get a lot more for your money by going with a travel trailer. The search was on! MeMaw helped by doing a lot of research and even found the one we ended up with on Craig's List. It has everything we need for "comfortable" camping! Four bunks for the kids, a bathroom, kitchen, and separate room for Mommy and Daddy! We are so excited for our first trip in October to the Smokey Mountains. MeMaw and PaPaw will be coming in their 5th Wheel and we will camp right next to each other. I am thankful that we will be able to do something so special as a family and am looking forward to lots of camping adventures and stories! Not to mention pictures and scrapbook pages!

My goal was to create a fast layout since my life is busy! I decided that the ultimate layout about me would be a fast one, since that's pretty much the standard in my life lately. Busy, busy, busy. My secret for a quick layout? Remember a few key rules:
- Blending is great! Use the tools that are already out there to help you achieve a quick layout. Brandy Murry’s ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Background Blenders works for me!
- Styles are my friend! Use one basic style kit to create a cohesive look on your layout. In this case, I used Melanie Johnson's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Eclectic Biggie 9401.
- Make sure you have a focal point and a few great embellishments to pull it all together. Happy scrapping!
