Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Thao Cosgrove's ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: 12x12 Gallery came with a wooden floor layer. I wanted to use carpet instead. First, I applied Brandy Murry's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Knitting Basket 8501. Next, I added a Color Overlay in the Styles Palette to add color to the layer. I duplicated the layer, right-clicked, and chose "Convert to Smart Object." With that duplicated layer active, I went to Edit> Transform> Perspective and dragged the bottom-right corner out a bit. Finally, I added my daughter's stuffed toy, a book, a pencil, and our cat above the carpet layer in my layout, because my house never has a bare floor.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I always procrastinate when it comes to doing birthday layouts! It's usually because I have so many photos that I'm overwhelmed at having to choose which ones to use, not to mention having to figure out how to place so many photos in the layout. This is where I love to use ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates like ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Collage 2 and ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Clusters 3. In this layout, I used two different photo cluster/collage embellishment templates together to create one double layout with lots of photos. In addition, I didn't have to think about where to place my photos. The work was already done by our great designers! Second birthday layout checked off the to-do list!

Journaling: Andrew is two years old! He is such a sweet boy. He loves to cuddle and loves to take his naps! He is talking a lot, but still baby talk. He thinks frogs are funny, so Mommy decided to make him a frog cake. She had a blast dreaming up the 5 Little Speckled Frogs Sitting on a Speckled Log cake. Andrew was very intrigued by the cake and thought it was a toy. He played with the frogs swimming in the Jello pond and ate the cattails made of Tootsie Rolls. He was very green by the time he was done! Not to mention, wired from the sugar!
We had his party on his actual birthday, May 9, which happened to be Mother's Day. MeMaw and PaPaw came. Betsy Grace and Scarlett were very excited to celebrate. Betsy learned how to blow up a balloon all by herself and Scarlett enjoyed his cake! Andrew had lots of fun playing with the balloons until they wouldn't behave!
MeMaw and PaPaw gave him a bunch of match cars and a mat with a city on it for him to drive them on. He enjoyed playing cars with PaPaw and having a sword fight with PaPaw using the foam swords they gave him. Mommy and Daddy gave him his first tricycle and he thought he was so big! When it was time to blow out the candles he didn't know what to think!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted to use the alpha from Beloved Collection Biggie, but the letters didn't show up quite enough on the layout. To fix this, I duplicated the alpha. On the bottom layer, I applied ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Painted Plastic 6401 Super Biggie. It gave the alpha enough color to show up while remaining transparent.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
The title of my layout was created with pieces from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Pink Ink. The original template had a flame behind the text, but I thought a giant paw print would better suit my photos. I deleted the flame layer and added a new blank layer in its place by clicking on the little white square at the top of the Layers Palette. You can also add a new layer by clicking Ctrl+Shift+N or by clicking Layer> New> Layer from the menu across the top of your workspace. Next, I chose Dynamic Brush Set: Tracks 8301 and increased the size until it was similar to the size of the flame. I placed one cat print on my layout. To color it, I clipped a paper from 2 Much Fun Collection Mini, and then, for added dimension, I applied the Glossy Style from ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Candy Cane 6301. Now I have a perfectly coordinated title for my layout!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
At first, the larger photo on the left side was overpowering my layout even though the photo mask has a bit of a blending effect. I wanted it to blend even more, so I lowered the Opacity of the photo mask layer until I achieved the look I wanted.
Also, I duplicated the glitter layer multiple times and moved the different layers around until they filled up the top and bottom of my layout. Then, I merged the layers and added a layer mask. I made a selection around my text, made sure my mask was selected, and then filled it with black. This hid the glitter from the area around my text, allowing the viewer to read my journaling more clearly.

Journaling: August 9, 2010. It's the BIG day! Kalyssa's first day of Kindergarten! She was so excited! Excited to wear her pink first-day-of-school outfit. Excited for me to take her picture in front of the special banner Uncle Tom made. Excited to see her new teacher, Mrs. Lummer, again. Excited to make new friends. Excited to learn. And excited to finally be a big girl in school every day. She even came home excited to do her homework! Right from the start, her teachers love her and she came home with a new best friend. She already knew Ashleigh from preschool but they weren't best friends. But since this first day they have practically been inseparable. This year couldn't possibly have started any better and I have every confidence that it will be a year that will shape her education and love of learning in the positive way I hoped and prayed for.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Instead of using ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Masks - Grungy Edge for a 4x6-inch photo, I stretched it disproportionately to make a border for the 12x12-inch page. I generally don't stretch things out of proportion or make them this much larger than they started, but with this level of grunge, the item is very forgiving and it worked well. I used ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Artful Photo Masks as a mat behind the shaped photo. I colored it brown using the Paint Bucket Tool, then used a couple of Styles (Blended and Textures) to make it similar to the cut stone visible at the exit of the tunnel on the photo.

Journaling: The first time Jeff and I drove the Iron Mountain Road in 2002 we didn't know about the spectacular view of Mt. Rushmore through the tunnel. What a sweet surprise! In 2009 we were ready to park and take a quick photo. Christopher was impressed with the view; Michael was taking a nap in his seat and missed the whole drive. William faced backward and didn't have much of a view.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I love using a transparency Style for added pop in a layout without being overwhelming, as I did in this sample by using ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Transparency 4901. Here, I used ScrapSimple Alpha Templates: Photo Collage (the letter S), and applied the transparency Style to it. Next, I duplicated my layer (Ctrl+J) and recolored my layer to blue. Finally, I selected "Dissolve" for my Blending Mode in order to get that splattered-blue paint effect. I adjusted my Opacity to 45% (and my Fill to 37%, if you are using Photoshop CS). I love the chunky look of my S, and I love how it doesn't overwhelm my layout, but subtly ties everything together.

I love the versatility of ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates! For this layout, I enlarged the size of the circles from the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Clusters 3, so they became more of a background element. I also duplicated one of the photo frames and resized the photo elements to fit the layout design that I was after.
