Creativity Formula

Over time – as you fill up your mind with random bits of new information - you will start feeling as if your mind will explode. Under these conditions, it is difficult – if not impossible – to be creative.

The Remedy

Do something completely unrelated to the area in which you are seeking creative thought. The more mindless and calming the activity, the better.



Find a quiet spot. Sit in the silence and listen.



Locate a big notebook and a working pen.
Write down every thought that appears in your mind.
Do not edit.
Do not organize.
Write as fast as you can.
Write until your brain is empty.


Repeat as required.

Note: Using a notebook for this creative-spilling-out-your-brain-into-view activity has an entirely different result than brainstorming on your computer. Scribbled words are far less distracting than having the temptation to access the world through your favorite browser.

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

How to Make Alphabet Flashcards

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS3 with Windows 7.

It's easy to make your own alphabet flashcards with the alpha set from the New School Collection Biggie. When laminated, these cards can also be used for handwriting practice.

Begin by opening up the file named AMC_NewSchool_Flashcard_Alpha_Sheet-1.

Create a new layer below the alpha, and fill with white or your desired background color. An easy way to fill the background is by using the Paint Bucket Tool. Save this file with a new name, then print onto heavy paper such as premium glossy photo paper.

Repeat the same process for the file named AMC_NewSchool_Flashcard_Alpha_Sheet-2.

Next, create a background paper for the flashcards. Start with a new 8.5x11-inch document. Choose File> Place and select your desired background paper.

I've chosen AMC_NewSchool_Paper_Alphabet-Green. Select OK, and your paper will be placed into your new file. Be sure to save this file.

Print the background paper onto sticker paper (or regular printer paper and then spray-mount/glue the backside of the paper.) This will give the cards an interesting backing as well as additional thickness. Adhere the background paper to the reverse side of the printed alpha cards.

Next, trim the edges of the alpha sheet and laminate.

Cut out and trim the edges of each of the cards after lamination. Be sure to trim the edges round so they won't be sharp.

You might want to make a second copy and play a matching game. You could hole-punch the corners and attach them with a ring binder. Laminated cards can be used for handwriting practice with a white board erasable marker. Your child can practice tracing over the letter with the erasable marker, then wipe it off and try again. These flashcards make learning fun!

SEPTEMBER EVENTS

September Message Board Game: Simplify September!

It's time to kick off a new season and the upcoming holidays with fun and focus on scrapbooking! And a few prizes thrown in never hurt, right? Join us on the message board this month for "Simplify September!" This Message Board game and challenge is meant to help you get those photos out of your camera and get started on your holiday cards, 2011 Calendars and focus on taking time to scrapbook regularly, despite the little speedbumps of life. When the month is over, you'll have completed several projects and have been challenged along the way.

A member of the Welcoming Committee will post a task every day from September 1st - 30th in the game thread. Don't let the idea of daily tasks intimidate you. When we say "mini," we mean it. Our goal isn't simply to keep you busy, but to direct your focus through baby-step tasks that will lead you to completed projects. Some tasks will require Message Board participation, email responses or Gallery posting. Read each daily task carefully to see what is required of you. (If nothing is specified, then it is an "on your honor" task, and we'll trust that you did as required - tasks will often build upon one another, and we'll see in later tasks that you completed earlier ones.)

PRIZES: Those who complete all tasks and submit or post required participation by 11:59pm MT on September 30th will be entered in a drawing to win one of three $10 Gift Certificates to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Those who complete just the layouts will be entered in a separate drawing to win one of three $5 Gift Certificates. (Those who complete all tasks will have their name entered in both drawings!)

Winners will be announced in the Newsletter on Saturday, October 9th.

Layout Contests:

September Monthly Layout Contest: You may not think about it often, but you do make a positive impact on those around you. For the September contest, we want you to scrap a layout about something you have done that made a positive impact on someone else. It might be in your role as a parent, a friend, a teacher, or a team member in sports or at work. Post your layouts in the September Gallery before Midnight MT on September 30th. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
