Make Your Layouts "Real"

My computer is mad at me; I have rediscovered the magical process of writing first drafts with pen and paper. And I have remembered that writing this way includes some natural benefits.

  1. Writing with a pen forces brevity as I am motivated to avoid hand cramps.

  2. Brevity forces clarity.

  3. Writing with a pen slows my mind down. It's easier to see why a particular sentence needs to be taken out even before I write it on the page.

  4. Scribbling a line through an unwanted word or phrase does not permanently remove them from the draft. Should I decide I want to use them after all, they are readily available to recover.

  5. Moving the handwritten first draft into a computer creates a natural editing opportunity as the natural time-space imposed between the two drafts creates a fresh look at the material.

  6. Seeing the ideas written on a page makes them seem "real." I often feel that words read on a computer screen are not. Perhaps this is because it is easy to remove them from the prose without leaving a trace of their existence. Once I delete them, they are gone forever.

  7. Backing up my words occurs as soon as they are written in the notebook. I do not have to burn them on CDs, move them to external hard drives, or allow them to be sucked up onto Carbonite's servers for them to be protected.

How does this relate to digital scrapbooking? It occurs to me that as long as we stack up our digital scrapbooking layouts on our hard drives without printing them out, they are not "real" and are subject to getting lost if we aren't carefully backing them up. Besides, it is difficult for anyone to see them, and it is nearly impossible to show them off to people who visit our homes.

So come on, you guys... let's get printing!

DIGITAL SCRAPBOOKING TUTORIAL

Adding a Unique Shadow to an Orchid Embellishment

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS2 with Windows XP.

One of the embellishments in Orchid Collection Mini is an illustration of a potted orchid plant. Instead of the typical flat drop-shadow, you can add a more unique shadow for a greater three-dimensional look.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Potted orchid embellishment.

First, open a new document and drag the file OrchidPlant.png onto it.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Add drop shadow to embellishment.

Next, right-click on the Plant layer and choose "Blending Options," then "Drop Shadow." Apply the following settings:

Blending Mode: Multiply
Color: Black
Angle: 120 degrees
Distance: 10px
Spread: 0%
Size: 20px

Then, click OK.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Create layer.

Back to the Layers Palette, right-click on the Effects section of the Plant layer and choose "Create Layer" from the menu. Click OK to accept.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Drop shadow is now on its own layer.

This will separate the drop shadow onto its own layer. Now you can freely transform the shadow without affecting the original image.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Drag drop shadow layer to transform its location.

With the Drop Shadow layer selected, go to Edit> Free Transform. Drag the top of the boundary box to about the middle of the object.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Move the drop shadow layer.

Nudge the drop shadow upward so that the bottom is hidden behind the pot. The drop shadow should already look more three-dimensional.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Skew the drop shadow to give it a three-dimensional look.

Next, go to Edit> Transform> Skew. Drag the top of the boundary box and move to the left or right. You will see the top of the shadow move likewise. The embellishment and its shadow are now ready to be used in your next digital scrapbooking layout.

Do terms like blending mode and opacity throw you for a loop? Help is just a click away in the Scrap Girls Boutique. Grab the video tutorials available in Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed and MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed!

AUGUST EVENTS

August Message Board Game: Posting Contest!

It's that time again - Posting Contest time! This is where you are rewarded for your flying fingers and chattiness. The contest will run from August 1 when we post the thread to August 31 at 12:00 Midnight (MST). We are doing things a little differently this time, so here are the rules:

1) To enter the Posting Challenge, reply in the game thread with your CURRENT post count. This is the number under your Avatar that shows when you post. Do not post the number found on your profile; it is a different number that is calculated differently.

2) During the month, chat your fingers off!

3) On August 31, BEFORE Midnight (MST), go back to your original post in the game thread (the one with your starting post count) and take a screenshot of it. Send the screenshot to [email protected]. The screenshot is your contest entry! We will calculate your post count based on the numbers on the screenshot. (Directions for taking screenshots will be posted in the game thread.)

Prizes: The top poster gets a $20 Scrap Girls gift certificate. Everyone over 250 new posts will be entered in a random drawing for a $10 Scrap Girls gift certificate. Everyone over 100 new posts will be entered into a random drawing for a $5 Scrap Girls gift certificate.

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls message board.
