Using the color sketch action from ScrapSimple Tool – Action: Sketch It PS 8501 Mini, I made a rendering of the photo of my daughter to use on the background paper. Then I gave the sketched layer a layer mask and, using a soft, large brush, I erased part of the sketched photo to make it blend more into the background paper. I placed the original photo on top of the sketch with a photo mat behind it that matched the first background paper of my layout, thus pulling the viewer's eye right into the center of the layout - my daughter.

For this layout, I combined two digital layout templates using the techniques taught by Angie Briggs at the Scrap Girls 2009 Digital Scrap Link event. For those of us who couldn't attend the convention, the class materials are available in the Scrap Girls Boutique as Scrap Girls 2009 Digital Scrap Link Class: Combining ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates. To get the look and the photo placement that I had in mind, I combined one of the templates included in the ebook download with ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Tear It Up 2.

To create the blue wash background, I clipped a blue paper from the Chillin Collection to a template from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Background Blenders. To refine the edges to my liking, I used my favorite grunge brush, Brush Set: Grungelle, to erase parts of the template.
This first product is included in this month's Scrap Girls Club offering. Members receive a substantial discount on these club supplies. They are also available elsewhere in the Boutique at regular prices for those individuals who would rather not join a club.

I only had two photos to use for the small photo squares, but I wanted to have three squares for balance. First, I made a third square with my Shape Tool, colored it blue, and brushed clouds on it by using Brush Set: Time Traveler - Clouds Biggie. I resized the Family Tree paper template from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Family Branch to fit in the square, then colored it green.

I love Angie Briggs' eBook, Scrap Girls 2009 Digital Scrap Link Class: Combining ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates. I found it to be very exciting and so useful for the way I scrapbook. Following the instructions laid out in the book, I combined one of the included templates with a template from ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: 12x12 Negative Space. I tried to include elements from both templates by incorporating the paper placement and stitches of the first template with the photo and embellishment placement of the second. It's so exciting for me to get extra mileage out of my digital scrapbooking stash!

I found a great word art set by Angie Briggs in the His and Hers Collection Biggie, and I knew I wanted to include a few of the words on this layout. I loved the style, especially with the brackets. I had one little problem, however. I needed a word that would fit into my title, and nothing seemed to fit just right. I found myself thinking, "If only she had included the word love instead of loved, that would have been perfect!" Photoshop to the rescue! I pulled the {loved} word art into my layout, selected the word, then used the Lasso Tool to select the "d" and delete it. Then, I selected "}" and nudged it closer to the rest of the word. It was a really quick fix, and I had the perfect word art accent.

Journaling: To celebrate our 13th anniversary, Mike & I spent the day in Park City. We had a great time just being with each other. These photos are from random spots in Park City. The big photo of the tree is one of my favorite quirky spots: A tree absolutely covered from top to bottom with shoes of all shapes and sizes. Bottom-right, one of the Olympic memorial sculptures.

Who said photo spots in templates are just for photos? I used ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Multiple Photo 4 as a starting point for my layout. This template had spots for five photos. However, I didn't have five photos I wanted to use. Instead I used two of the spaces for embellishments to add a little more interest to my page.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
In this layout, I wanted to give the depth effect between the elements. This required working with the shadows of these elements. In the elements that are above the photo, I worked separately with each one of the shadow layers. For example, for the ribbon that is on the right side of the picture, I went to Layer> Layer Style> Drop Shadow and set up as follows: Opacity 57%, Angle 90, Distance 43px, Spread 0, and Size 49px. I put some elements between the first and second papers, and to increase the depth effect, I worked with the shadow of the first paper as well. Working with shadows is fun and gives a very nice touch to the layout. For those who do not have time to play with shadows, our Scrap Girls Boutique has some great Actions for that.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
For this layout, I wanted to use the highly graphic layout template ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Multiple Photo 3, but I only wanted to use one photo. I decided to use the grouping of photo blocks as a mask for one photo. To do that, I made seven copies of my photo. Then I locked all the photos together so if I moved them, they would move all together as one. Then, I placed one copy of the photo directly above each of the seven photo blocks in the Layers Palette. Even though they are locked together, I could still change their location in the Layers Palette. I clipped each copy of the photo to the photo block directly below it by highlighting both the photo layer and the photo block it would be clipped to and hit Ctrl+G. Once they were all clipped to their mask below, the photo took on the shape of the template as though it were one. I took it a step further by selecting only certain photo blocks and adding texture to those portions of the photo. To do that, I selected which portion I wanted to adjust, and I added a copy of ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Off The Wall just above the photo. Then I clipped it to the mask along with the photo and changed the Blending Mode of the paper template layer until I liked the effect.
