Combining Photo Folds and Rolled Tears

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Windows XP.

This tutorial will explain how I combined two ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates in one layout: ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Folds 4 with ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Rolled Tears.

First, I opened the photo fold I wanted to use on my layout. In this case, I chose template 3 (TKA_SS_Emb_PhotoFolds4_Tmp3.psd).

Next, I opened the photo I wanted to use in my layout. Then, I dragged my photo to the photo fold template, resized it, and placed it.

I placed the photo above the base layer and applied a clipping mask (Ctrl+Alt+G).

Then, I opened the rolled tear template I wanted to incorporate into the photo fold template. Here, I'm using tear template 1 (TKA_SS_Emb_RldTrs1_Tear1.psd).

Next, I dragged all the layers from the rolled tears PSD to the photo folds window while holding down the Shift key. This placed it in the middle of the window.

From here, without deselecting the layers from the rolled tears PSD, I resized the rolled tear and decided where to place it so it didn't remove too much detail from my photo.

Next, I cut out the rolled tear base from the photo. To do this, I found the rolled tear base layer (TKA_SS_Emb_RldTrs_Tear1_00-BG) and selected pixels by right-clicking on the layer thumbnail and highlighting "Select Pixels."

Then, I found the base layer from the photo fold (base), selected it, and did a cut (Ctrl+X). I made the rolled tear base layer invisible by clicking on the Eyeball icon next to the thumbnail.

Since the colors of the folds in these templates didn't quite match up, I changed the fold color of the rolled tear. To do this, I used the Eyedropper Tool and selected the color from the photo fold corner.

Then I selected the right-curl layer (TKA_SS_Emb_RldTrs_Tear1_04-RtCurl) and selected pixels by right-clicking on the layer thumbnail and highlighting "Select Pixels." I filled this with the foreground color by going to Edit> Fill> Foreground Color (or hit Shift+F5 and then Foreground color). I repeated this step with the left-curl layer (TKA_SS_Emb_RldTrs_Tear1_08-LtCurl layer).

If you've been following along with this tutorial while duplicating the steps in your own layout, you will notice you have a lot of layers associated with this photo, so you'll want to combine them. But do it in such a way that you can leave it available for changes... just in case. To do this, just select ALL the layers in the photo, right-click, and highlight "Convert to Smart Object."

Now, we're ready to do our layout! I can drag this Smart Object to my paper, then add embellishments, text, and other elements to finish the layout.

These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes, simply giving participants a one hour goal and a fun, new challenge each week. On July 28th, we'll do a Nature Challenge! Create a layout that shows nature in some way. Could be flowers, wildlife, camping - anything that highlights nature. Create your layout and upload it to the special High Noon Crop Gallery. You'll be amazed what you can get done in just one hour, but there is no High Noon Sheriff timing you!

July Message Board Game: BINGO!

It's that time again! Join us for an exciting game of BINGO on the Message Board Forum in July! Pick 25 words from the list provided in the forum and send them in an e-mail to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your SG message board username" by Wednesday, June 30th (Midnight MT) in order to play in the first round, which will begin Thursday, July 1st.

Each day, members of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the Bingo list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call bingo in the forum to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards can be cleared and a new round will begin the following day. All winners win a $5 gift certificate to the Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

If you miss the first round cutoff date, you can still play! Just send in your Bingo card at any time during the month and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts. Everyone who sends in a Bingo card will receive a confirmation email that their card has been received. If you do not receive confirmation within 24 hours, please re-send your list of words.

Layout Contests:

July Monthly Layout Contest: Most all countries have a national holiday. The time of the year varies across our wide world but the United States just happens to celebrate Independence Day in July. For this month's layout contest, we want you to create a layout showing us something about what you do to celebrate your nation or show your patriotism. Post your layouts in the July Gallery before Midnight MT on July 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
