How to Draw a Portrait of Your Pet

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS2 with Windows XP.

Here's a fun, alternative way to scrapbook your pet. Using Dynamic Brush Set: Drawing 5701, you can easily transform a regular photo of your favorite pooch or kitty into an artistic portrait, simply by tracing.

This technique works best in conjunction with a pressure-sensitive drawing tablet, such as a Wacom. A mouse can also be used, but the variation of drawing lines will be limited.

First, open Dynamic Brush Set: Drawing 5701, and choose the first brush called "Basic."

Practice drawing thick and thin lines using this brush by adjusting the pressure of your Wacom pen on the tablet. The more variation your lines have, the looser and more creative the final drawing will be. The lines above were drawn using only the "Basic" brush. Imagine how much variation you can create with all six brushes!

To start your pet's portrait, drag a photo onto a 12x12-inch document. Place it above your background paper.

Create a new layer above the photo layer. This is your drawing layer. With the color of your choice selected as the foreground and the Opacity of the brush set at 100%, start tracing your photo on the drawing layer. Remember to vary your tracing lines. Don't worry about tracing too tightly or perfectly.

Tip: Reduce the Opacity of the photo layer from 100% to 75% to help you to see the brush lines as you go.

As you draw, hide the original photo from time to time so you can see what the portrait looks like.

Tip: Create thicker lines for outside edges (such as around the main body and face) and thinner, more delicate lines for inner details (such as the fur and whiskers).

After you've drawn most of the lines, create a new layer underneath the drawing layer. This is your Color Fill layer. Use the Lasso Tool to select everything except the background. Fill in the selected area with the color of choice. Now you have two layers of the portrait: The Drawing layer and the Color Fill layer (both above your Photo layer).

With the area still selected, you can also remove the background of the photo at this time by going to Select> Inverse. While on the photo layer, click Delete.

Finish the portrait by creating a new layer under the photo layer. This is your details layer. Use the other brushes in the set to create shadows and more details.

Tip: Set the Opacity of the brushes around 20% so you can add additional brushwork gradually. Also, you may need to hide the Color Fill layer as you work so you can see the shadows and details off the original photo.

Finally, delete or hide your original photo layer. The portrait is now ready for your next digital scrapbooking layout featuring your sweet pet.

This technique can also be used on photos of babies, children, adults, flowers, nature, and objects.

July Message Board Game: BINGO!

It's that time again! Join us for an exciting game of BINGO on the Message Board Forum in July! Pick 25 words from the list provided in the forum and send them in an e-mail to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your SG message board username" by Wednesday, June 30th (Midnight MT) in order to play in the first round, which will begin Thursday, July 1st.

Each day, members of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the Bingo list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call bingo in the forum to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards can be cleared and a new round will begin the following day. All winners win a $5 gift certificate to the Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

If you miss the first round cutoff date, you can still play! Just send in your Bingo card at any time during the month and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts. Everyone who sends in a Bingo card will receive a confirmation email that their card has been received. If you do not receive confirmation within 24 hours, please re-send your list of words.

Layout Contests:

July Monthly Layout Contest: Most all countries have a national holiday. The time of the year varies across our wide world but the United States just happens to celebrate Independence Day in July. For this month's layout contest, we want you to create a layout showing us something about what you do to celebrate your nation or show your patriotism. Post your layouts in the July Gallery before Midnight MT on July 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
