I believe that making a layout requires a lot of our imagination. I love using big and colorful pictures. For this layout, I chose to work with the Serene Collection, which is a collection full of peaceful colors that contrasted well with the strong colors of the photo. I put flowers on the right and left side, but I wanted to change the center color of the flowers. For this, I selected only the center of the flower using the Magic Wand Tool and painted in orange using the Paint Bucket Tool.

I fell in love with Brush Set: Scrapbooking Fun when I saw the product in the Boutique. I thought they would look perfect on a T-shirt. I used my software to create a fun T-shirt design. After taking careful measurements, I printed the design onto Fabric Transfer Paper. Next, I followed the directions on the Fabric Transfer Paper package, which were really simple... and viola! I created a fun, creative, and original T-shirt.

To add a little bit of color and sparkle to my pink and white background layer, I placed gem swirls from Sweet Cherry Jubilee Collection underneath three of the "doilies." This added just a hint of color and coordinated nicely with the green hues in the patterned paper.

For this layout, I wanted to use Acrylic Overlays Shapes Paper on top of my background paper and some of the embellishments. When I placed it on the layout, the bold colors of the background became more subdued than I wanted. To keep the look of the acrylic and still maintain the strong color, I used a layer mask to lighten the portions of the acrylic paper that would allow the background to show through more boldly. The other thing that was done was with the shadow. In CS4, the Blending Mode of the shadow can be changed just like in a layer. I scrolled through the Blending Modes while setting the shadow parameters on the acrylic paper layer until I liked the result. Here the Blending Mode of the shadow is set to "Color Burn."

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Diane (Dinny) Miller's digital Photography Simplified eBook was extremely helpful to me as I learned to use my digital SLR camera. I did a little photo shoot with my daughter, incorporating many of the principles discussed in this eBook, as well as techniques I learned from Laurel Lakey's Scrap Girls 2009 Digital Scrap Link Class: Let There Be Light.
I also turned a star element in the Barefoot Collection into a brush, and then changed the Blending Mode to fade it into my background.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
On this layout, I wanted the title to be fairly large, but when I typed it out at the size I wanted, I wasn't able to see the whole thing since my background and circle mat were very different colors. So I duplicated the text, changed the color on the text copy, and then Ctrl+Clicked on the thumbnail for the circle mat to create a selection. Once I had my selection, I made sure my duplicated text layer was active and then added a layer mask. This hid the part of the text that I didn't want, showing the first color underneath. Then I repeated the process for the second type layer in my title.

Journaling: Kalyssa, This was your first year in school and you just loved it! You showed that you are already a good student but most of all you showed us that you are truly a good friend! You always ask others what they want to do and you do it. You are constantly trying to make others feel special. You truly honor both your teachers and your friends. And they all just adore you! You are growing up so fast and that makes me a little sad. But we are looking forward to seeing all that you become. We couldn't be more proud!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I made the stitched curve by placing one of the ScrapSimple Tools - Shapes: Waves 3801 on my page. I placed the two cream papers above the curve in the Layers Palette, applied a clipping mask to both, and adjusted the Blending Mode to "Darker Color." I used ScrapSimple Tools – Actions: Edge It 5001 with the Dynamic Brush Set: Basic Stitching 4901 Biggie to add a straight stitch around the shape. Then I applied ScrapSimple Tools- Styles: Embed 1801 to the stitching for added depth.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create a punched-out border, first I stamped a scalloped brush from Dynamic Brush Set: Stitched 6301 on its own layer. To form a straight border, I held down the Shift key while dragging the mouse across the page. Then with the brush layer selected, I pressed Ctrl+Click on the activated layer ("marching ants"). Next, I selected the blue background paper and hit Delete. At this point, I could have either turned off or deleted the brush layer. My final step was to apply a small drop shadow to the background paper to give some depth to the punched-out paper.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make my son look like he is popping out of the photo, I duplicated the photo onto two separate layers. On the top layer, using the Pen Tool, I traced around the image of my son. Then I turned the path into a selection in the Paths Menu, inversed the selection by going to the Select drop-down menu, clicked on Inverse, and then hit the Delete button to remove the background of the top photo. Then I placed a layer in between the bottom photo and the top photo layer. On this middle layer, I drew a box smaller than the size of the photo. Then I placed the box layer behind the bottom photo and clipped the photo to the box. Before merging the box and clipped photo, I played with the box until I was satisfied with how much of my son was popping out of the boundaries of the background. Once I was happy with how the photos looked, I merged the box and bottom photo layer, linked the two photo layers together, but did not merge them into one layer, because I knew I wanted to give the bottom photo layer a Scrap Simple Tools - Styles: Glitter Edge style.

Journaling: This year to celebrate Purim you decided to go as Willy Wonka. Once your costume was complete, you looked so much like Willy Wonka that we couldn't stop laughing. You tucked chocolates and lollies into your pockets and grabbed the big Toblerone package, gave us your cheekiest smile and headed off to school.
