Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
For this layout, I wanted to make a really rich, deeply textured background paper. I started with the paper named Stone from Natural Collection Biggie because there was quite a bit of texture in the paper. Then, a broad strip from the striped paper in the Sun Kissed Collection Biggie was added, and the edges were blended and softened with a layer mask and a brush from Brush Set: Grungelle. The swirls from Chillin Collection were added to the corners. To make the depth of color really pop in the background paper, the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Edgy, BOLD was layered on top of everything! The Blending Mode of the paper template was set to "Overlay." Then, to make the subtle edging, the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Edgy, THIN was selected and clipped with the same blue paper as the mat from the Glory Papers.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I created this layout in Photoshop Elements, a program that does not have the capability of creating paths for text or Dynamic Brushes to follow. I really wanted the music staff and notes in Dynamic Brush Set: Musical Notes 5701 Biggie to follow a smooth path, and I found a way to do it easily! I used my Shape Tool and added a wavy border from ScrapSimple Tools - Shapes: Waves 3801, placing the top of it in the spot I wanted my music to go. I chose the five-lined staff brush from Dynamic Brush Set: Musical Notes 5701 Biggie, selected ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Edge It PSE 5001 from the Filters section of the Effects Palette. Next, I selected the shape I created by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette, which set "marching ants" all around the edge of the shape. Next, I chose "Exact" from the action's set of choices and clicked "Apply." My staff now followed a nice soft curve and, unfortunately, all four sides of the shape! (Don't worry, we’ll deal with that issue at the end.) I repeated the process with the quarter notes brush included in the set and added a treble clef to finish the look. Then I applied the Brushed Aluminum style from ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Metals 5001 to each layer, deleted the wavy shape layer, and used the Eraser Tool to remove any stray notes and lines that were created.

What's the most fun thing about working with ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates? You can use them in so many ways! You can choose color, texture, and even change the size. In this layout, I chose to work with ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Coin Folders. I wanted to do a layout for girls with cheerful colors and elements that would give a feminine touch. I chose to use blue and brown to contrast with the light colors of the layout. To combine with the green shirt of my friend, I put green leaves on both sides. Before starting a layout, remember to look for colors that stand out in your photo. After that, you can choose to combine or contrast with these colors or do a little of both.

Are you looking for an easy way to make something pop? Use styles! I decided to use ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Alloys 6401 Super Biggie. By using the same set, but different styles within the set, there's a cohesive feel to the element as a whole. With just a few clicks of the mouse, the entire element is jazzed up. I also used ScrapSimple Tools- Styles: Cardboard Glitter 6301 Biggie. You've got to love all of the fabulous styles that Scrap Girls has to offer!

I love the look of a highly embellished layout, but sometimes you want the other elements of your page to take center stage. Using solid-colored cardstock digital papers and the Brush Set: Collage Shapes as my layout guide, I kept this page simple and without many elements so the focus was kept on my photo, title, and journaling instead.

Journaling: This sunny afternoon, Mommy & Chaislynn took a ride to the park. Chaislynn danced and sang her little heart out in the gazebo to music from Mommy's cell phone. We had lots of fun that warm Spring day!

When I'm using ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates, I have a tendency to use the frames that come with it. Frequently, I have plain white borders/frames around my photos. That's great for a lot of layouts, but it just didn't work for this one. I found thin frame and a mat in my supply stash and placed them in the right spot either above or below my photos. Then I deleted the frame layers from the template. Now my layout has the dirty feel you would expect to see in a layout about changing the oil!

Journaling: Our sort-of annual "Oil Change Photo Shoot" started by accident when Kalyssa was only 8 months old. Ever since then we try to dress them all in the most current Bonneville event shirt, jeans and the ever-useful oil rag! We all have fun getting dirty!

I did not add my solid brown border to my layout until the end. It was kind of a finishing touch for me. Once my layout was complete to my satisfaction, I merged my layers together. Then I placed a new layer under my layout. I used the Paint Bucket Tool to color this new layer brown. Next, I resized my layout slightly until the background layer showed to my liking. When resizing things, it is important to note that you should resize from the corner points and never from the four sides. This keeps your photos and embellishments from becoming distorted.

Journaling: In high school, these girls were my best friends. After high school, we went our separate ways to college and later married and had children. We kept in touch through emails, blogs, Facebook, as well as an occasional get-together. During the summer of 2008, the three of us reunited. We weren't sure when we would be seeing each other again. That fall, my family planned on moving out of the country, Aleena and her family would be moving back to California, and Heather and her husband were headed east for more schooling. I am thankful for the Internet and the ease it allows me to stay in touch with my high school friends.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create matching mats for each of my photos, I did a Ctrl+Click on the layer thumbnail in the Layers Palette. That put the "marching ants" on that layer. Then, I clicked the new layer icon which put the outline of the photo on the new layer. I placed a stroke on the new layer at 20 pixels and I repeated this process for each picture. I used a clipping mask to clip the blue star paper from Dance Collection Biggie to the stroke around my photos. Now I have a customized mat around each photo in exactly the same size without having to "eyeball" how big it should be! This is also a very useful technique to use when you aren't sure you want to keep the stroke. This way, it's on its own layer and can be hidden or removed anytime.

Journaling: Betsy Grace and Scarlett took ballet from Fall 2009 to Spring 2010. Betsy Grace was too afraid to perform in front of the parents for the winter recital. When it came time for the spring recital, she said that she would try to do it. She enjoyed going to ballet each week, but was very apprehensive about performing in front of others. Her teacher, Miss Jackie, said she knew the dance very well and was a beautiful dancer. When the recital started, Betsy Grace didn't dance with the other girls, but when it was time for them to perform the dance to the song "Thy Word," she gathered up her courage, joined the other ballerinas and danced for Jesus! Mommy and Daddy were so proud of her for conquering one of her fears! Betsy Grace was pretty proud, too! I pray that she never forgets this time when she realized the truth of God's Word: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
There are so many ways to use ScrapSimple Paper Templates! In this layout, I wanted to mimic the coloring on my son's car by "coloring" the chipboard background. Template 5 in ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Glory has three distinct colors - light gray, dark gray, and black. I wanted each color section on a separate layer so I could apply a different color style to each one. With my template in my layout, I used my Magic Wand Tool (with Contiguous unchecked) to select the black portion (the stars). With the black portion selected, I right-clicked with my mouse and chose "Layer via Cut" from the drop-down menu. That made just the black portion with the stars into a new layer, which I named "Stars" to help me find it in the Layers Palette. I repeated the process for the dark gray swirls layer and named it "Swirls." Then I was able to apply different color versions of ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Freehand Coloring 8201 Super Biggie to each layer.
