Tucking Corners through Cut-Out Edge in
ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Basically Bordered 2

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 with Windows 7.

One of my favorite things to do with the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Basically Bordered 2 set is to layer two of them (or more!) in a way that creates the look of tucking the corners of one paper through the cut-out edge of another. This gives you a chance to play with more papers and add some depth and interest to your layouts. You can do this with any of the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Basically Bordered 2 shapes (circles, squares, or hearts available). In this tutorial, I'll show you how you can do it quickly and easily with the straight edges of the squares.

To begin, create a new 12x12-inch document. Hold Shift+Click and hold your mouse while dragging the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Basically Bordered 2 templates to your new document, then release your mouse and your chosen papers are neatly into centered position on your new document. For this tutorial, I chose ACA_SS_Paper_BBSquares2_CutOut.png and ACA_SS_Paper_BBSquares2_Stamp.png. In your Layers Palette, put your papers and paper templates in order as shown below from top to bottom:

Once in the correct order, clip each finished paper to the paper template directly below it by creating a clipping mask (Ctrl+Alt+G) and then link them together for when you move or angle them later.

With the Move Tool active and the Transform Controls showing, select the ACA_SS_Paper_BBSquares2_Stamp.png (I'll just call it the Stamp Layer to make things easier). Make it slightly smaller by clicking on a corner of the template, hold down the Shift key (to keep it square), and drag toward the center of the shape slightly. I tilted the template on an angle by clicking on a corner and rotating the template slightly just to offset the stamp edge from the cut-out edge.

For a very quick, layered look, simply Ctrl+Click the thumbnail of the ACA_SS_Paper_BBSquares2_CutOut.png template (let's call this the Cut-Out Layer) in the Layers Palette to select that layer and to see "marching ants" around it in your work space.

Next, highlight the Stamp Layer template in the Layers Palette and with the Eraser Tool, erase the areas where you'd like the Cut-Out Layer's frame to appear on top of the Stamp Layer's edge.

Now it looks like part of one paper is tucked through and layered with the other. You can stop here if you're happy with it as is.

To give your layout a more realistic layered look, you'll want to add some drop shadows, but this can prove a little tricky since we want the Stamp Layer to show partially above the other template and partially below it. Because we've erased part of the Stamp Layer's template, we'll need to work with layer masks and make a little magic. Now let the fun really begin!

First, apply a layer style by double-clicking on the Stamp Layer's template in the Layers Palette. This will open your Layer Styles box. First, check the box "Layer Mask Hides Effects" and then add your preferred drop shadow.

Copy the layer style (Right-Click> Copy Layer Style) and paste it to the Cut-Out Layer's template (Right-Click> Paste Layer Style) as well. Now the look of the papers layering through each other looks even more realistic, but if you look closely, you'll see that the Stamp Layer's template edge appears to have a shadow above the Cut-Out Layer's template rather than going under it.

We can remedy that with Layer Masks!

Highlight the Stamp template's edge and its accompanying paper (hold Ctrl while clicking on each layer) and duplicate them (Right-Click> Duplicate Layers). While still highlighted in your Layers Palette, move the duplicated layers below the Cut-Out template. The order should now be from top to bottom in your Layer Palette:

Highlight the original Stamp template in the Layers Palette and add a Layer Mask by clicking on the little square with a circle in it located at the bottom of your Layers Palette.

With the original Stamp template highlighted, click on the Layer Mask (white box next to the thumbnail of the template in the Layers Palette) to make sure you're working on the Layer Mask and not the actual template. Then choose a small brush using black as your foreground color to brush across the areas where the shadow appears to be above rather than below the Cut-Out template. Because you previously checked "Layer Mask Hides Effects" in the Layer Styles box, you are able to quickly and easily hide the drop shadow with this layer mask.

In the screenshot below, I've used the black brush to hide the effects on both sides up to the arrows, but I've left a section in the middle to show the difference with and without the layer mask working its magic.

Now your Stamp Layer appears to be tucked through the Cut-Out Layer with a realistic drop shadow to complete the look.

June Message Board Game: Quotable Quotes

The object of the game is to correctly guess the layout (created by either a product designer or layout artist) that contains a quote or journaling. Each day, you will be given a word found in the clue. We will keep giving words to the clues until a correct guess is made.

Be the first to answer it correctly and win a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only allowed ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed ONE win per month. When you make your guess, you must link it to the correct layout in the Boutique. We will play the game daily during the entire month of June. When a correct answer is given, the new puzzle will start the following day.

Layout Contests:

June Monthly Layout Contest: June is National Candy Month and who doesn't like candy!? For this month's layout contest, use the wrapper of your favorite candy for inspiration. Does your favorite candy have a great color combination, cool fonts or a fun striped pattern? Use whatever inspires you about it to create your layout. You don't have to include the candy's wrapper in your layout but you might mention it in your description. Create your layout and post it in the June Layout Contest Gallery by Midnight MT on June 30th. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used.
