Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
In order to create a cohesive look with my title, I duplicated the word "drama" and placed it below the original type layer in the Layers Palette. I then rasterized the layer, added a 10 pixel outside stroke and applied the ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Unique 5103 Super Biggie to the stroked layer, the word "queen" and the crown. I also extracted the jewel from the green flower, reduced the size and made several copies of the layer to make the jewels in the crown match those in the flowers.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To give the Red Print background paper a subtle painted look, I placed it over the Red Print paper from Durin Eberhart's Fantaisie Collection Mini. Then I applied ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Painting Textures to the Red Print paper and reduced its Opacity to 70%.

Journaling: My sweet niece, Mia, proudly poses for the camera after attempting to push herself up several times. It will not be long before she tucks in her legs and takes off crawling! August, 2009

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
The use of lights and shadows enriches the final result of a layout. In this layout, I wanted to add some leaves to give my layout a natural effect, and I chose to work with the shadows in the leaves that are below the brown ribbon. To do this, I selected the layer of leaves and went to Layer> Layer Style> Drop Shadow. After that, I moved the "Distance," "Spread" and "Size" sliders in the drop shadow dialogue box, until I got the shadow I wanted. Finally, I changed the Opacity of the shadow to 65%.

"Just Swanning Around" by Jo Corne

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To put my three photos of the swan into one photo strip, I first placed each photo onto its own layer. I then placed each photo within the space of the frame from the Garden View Collection. Once I was happy with the placement of each swan, I merged the three photo layers into one. To get a "strip" out of the three combined photos, I drew a rectangle on a new layer above the photos and shaped it until I was happy with a shape and size that would still work within the frame. I then moved the rectangular shape layer underneath the photo layer and clipped the photo to the rectangular shape with a clipping mask. The photo layer then took on the shape of the rectangle, making it look like a photo strip.

By simply changing the Blending Modes on an element, such as the swirls on my layout, you can get a whole new look. Here, I have used two swirls, with two different Blending Modes, one is set to "Normal" and one is set to "Color Dodge." I did the same thing with the heart brushes. The main part of the heart is set to "Overlay" and the inked edge is set to "Screen." Try experimenting with the Blending Modes with your brushes to see what kinds of different looks you can get!

Journaling: While I was pregnant I craved tea and coffee, which was strange because I had given up coffee years ago. So, after having Jenna, I invested in a Keurig machine. Now, I am able to have gourmet coffee, tea or hot cocoa anytime I want. Yum!

"Booger Cave" by Kelly Favor-Chronister

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make the stitches match my color scheme, I applied a felt style. This gave color and some texture to the stitches, and then I simplified those layers. Next, I applied a stitching style. I like to simplify layers when adding multiple styles because some styles do not work together. By simplifying the layer, I ensure that first effect is unchanged by the second.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0
Name of challenge: Create a layout about a funny family moment.
Journaling: So this whole thing started with Pop. He has always thought it was funny to ask if there are any "bats in the cave" after he has blown his nose. Which I think is funny enough, but soon Jamison caught on to this. Being two, he didn't catch on to the metaphor, but he did understand the cave concept and blowing noses, so he started calling his nostrils "booger caves". Of course Pop and Uncle Cody found this hilarious! I hate to admit it, but I think it's really funny too!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I often use several copies of the same element on my layouts. I use Photoshop Elements, and I've found that I can copy and move an element at the same time, which will quickly scatter the element across my page and allowing me to control placement. First, I'll be sure to name the layer, and then I'll apply a style, such as a drop shadow, so I only have to do it once. Then, making sure my Move tool is selected, I simply hold down my Alt key and drag the selected element to a place where I want it to be. The new layer will retain the style and the name of the original layer, adding copy, copy 1, copy 2 and so forth to the end of the name. Then I may resize and rotate as seems appropriate.

I wanted the border to look like dried-on mud. I applied ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Stamped - Neutrals 4902 - Biggie to the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Mixed Media Edges 2, then reduced the depth of the style's bevel and emboss setting to give it a flatter appearance.
