5 Easy Steps to Create a Digital Scrapbooking Layout

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Mac OS X.

Sometimes I think the biggest roadblock to creating a digital scrapbooking layout is facing that big empty square that's staring you down. It has so much potential, but... ack! What if I mess it up?

For those moments where you just need to conquer that initial 12x12-inch square so you can emerge once again victorious, this is the tutorial for you. It will work with any collection you have handy, needs a minimum of one photo, and can come together in a matter of minutes (seriously) if you know your way around your digital scrapbooking program just a bit.

In this tutorial, I am using primarily the Urban Gazette Collection. I also utilized the grid that's included in the Ten Basic Design Principles eBook to help me in placing the elements on my page strategically. Links to those products are provided at the end of this tutorial. Let's get started!

Step 1: I chose my photo and selected Image> Image Size, so I could resize it to 4x6.

Step 2: I chose a background paper that I felt worked well with my paper, then I pulled my photo onto the background paper and placed it in the lower left of my layout.

Step 3: I chose a second, contrasting digital scrapbooking paper and pulled it onto the background paper, sandwiching it on a layer between my photo and background paper in the lower third of my layout.

Step 4: I added two horizontal embellishments to visually break-up where the two digital scrapbooking papers come together to the right of my photo. To create this horizontal divide, you could use digital ribbons, a row of buttons or brads, zig-zag stitches, a thin strip of a third contrasting digital scrapbooking paper, or one of these options:

Step 5: I added a title for my page using alphas, and I placed the title right above the photo. This creates a pleasing sort of visual triangle with the title, my photo and the horizontal embellishments.

The result is a quick and easy layout. The empty canvas has been conquered! If you're feeling really creative and want to continue, you can go on to add a few more embellishments, journaling, and/or drop shadows.

June Message Board Game: Quotable Quotes

The object of the game is to correctly guess the layout (created by either a product designer or layout artist) that contains a quote or journaling. Each day, you will be given a word found in the clue. We will keep giving words to the clues until a correct guess is made.

Be the first to answer it correctly and win a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only allowed ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed ONE win per month. When you make your guess, you must link it to the correct layout in the Boutique. We will play the game daily during the entire month of June. When a correct answer is given, the new puzzle will start the following day.

Layout Contests:

June Monthly Layout Contest: June is National Candy Month and who doesn't like candy!? For this month's layout contest, use the wrapper of your favorite candy for inspiration. Does your favorite candy have a great color combination, cool fonts or a fun striped pattern? Use whatever inspires you about it to create your layout. You don't have to include the candy's wrapper in your layout but you might mention it in your description. Create your layout and post it in the June Layout Contest Gallery by Midnight MT on June 30th. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
