Fun with Brush Set: Collage Shapes

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 with Windows Vista.

Brushes are one of my favorite digital scrapbooking products because they are so versatile. I'm going to show you just a few of the fun ways you can use my Brush Set: Collage Shapes.

First, open up a background paper and either make a duplicate of it or drag it over to a new blank document. I used a paper from my Authentic Collection Mini. Make sure you have your Brush Set: Collage Shapes loaded in your Brush Palette. You can also just use the PNG files of the brushes included in this brush set.

Next, either "stamp" your desired collage brush on a new layer or drag the PNG over on top of your background paper.

Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool in your Menu Palette and drag it around the bottom two rows of circles and hit Delete. Now you are left with just the top three circles. This is another great thing about these brushes - you can add or subtract the number of shapes to suit your needs.

Choose a coordinating background paper and drag it on top of your circles. (I used another paper from my Authentic Collection Mini.) Use a Clipping Mask (Alt+Ctrl+G) to adhere the paper to the circles.

Next, add a photo to the center circle using a Clipping Mask just as above.

Now, add a border of circles. Start out changing the brush to a smaller size and then stamp the brush down your page as shown below. In my layout, I changed the Blending Mode in the Layers Palette to "Overlay" to give it a softer, burned effect.

Now, go ahead and embellish and personalize your layout. You can add a stroke and drop shadow to your circles by going into your Layers Palette.

Now, here's another fun way to use these brushes! Stamp one of the collage brushes all along one side of your paper vertically (this also works great horizontally).

Then, drag a coordinating paper over on top of your stamped border. I have used papers from the Pure Collection.

Next, clip the paper to the collage border using a Clipping Mask (Alt+Ctrl+G).

You can either leave it as is and add your photos, embellishments, and journaling to your layout, or you can add a photo or photos to some of the collage shapes.

Another easy and fun thing to do is add a photo to your collage brush, just drag your photo on top of your collage shape and use a Clipping Mask (Alt+Ctrl+G) to adhere it to the shape. I used a paper from my Isabella Collection Mini.

This is a cool effect and so easy to do!

These collage brushes also make great decorative mats for your layouts, and the heart shape is especially good for this purpose.

Open up several coordinating papers and drag them on top of your heart shape and use a Clipping Mask (Alt+Ctrl+G) to adhere them to your shape. Again, I selected papers from the Pure Collection.

When you are done, it will look something like this, almost a patchwork effect. Just think how much fun you can have decorating your page around this!

I could go on endlessly playing with these versatile brushes!

June Message Board Game: Quotable Quotes

The object of the game is to correctly guess the layout (created by either a product designer or layout artist) that contains a quote or journaling. Each day, you will be given a word found in the clue. We will keep giving words to the clues until a correct guess is made.

Be the first to answer it correctly and win a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only allowed ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed ONE win per month. When you make your guess, you must link it to the correct layout in the Boutique. We will play the game daily during the entire month of June. When a correct answer is given, the new puzzle will start the following day.

Layout Contests:

June Monthly Layout Contest: June is National Candy Month and who doesn't like candy!? For this month's layout contest, use the wrapper of your favorite candy for inspiration. Does your favorite candy have a great color combination, cool fonts or a fun striped pattern? Use whatever inspires you about it to create your layout. You don't have to include the candy's wrapper in your layout but you might mention it in your description. Create your layout and post it in the June Layout Contest Gallery by Midnight MT on June 30th. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
