How to Make a Mini Cookbook Album

Note: Created on a PC running Windows Vista with Photoshop CS2 (but easily adaptable to other computers and software).

I love to cook! I mainly use the cherished recipes handed down to me by Mom and other family members. Appetizers, main dishes, desserts – you name it – I've got it. My goal is to try a few new recipes each week. Sometimes these new recipes fail for one reason or another, but many times I stumble upon one that we like so much, it becomes part of my beloved recipe collection. Between the tried-and-true recipes and the new favorites, there is quite a collection.

From time to time, I have given parts of my recipe collection as a gift. Sometimes it's to a new bride, other times a young adult heading off to college. Usually the recipes are presented in a printed format, either 4x6-inch recipe cards or a hardbound book (available from many retailers). One method that is easy and well received is a mini cookbook album.

This tutorial is a recipe for a recipe book, and like every good recipe, there's a list of ingredients followed by the cooking instructions.

What You Need:

Recipes
Photo Album that holds 4x6 prints (I bought an inexpensive one for less than $1 at Walmart)
Printer (or have your cards printed at your favorite photo printing shop)
ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: 4x6 Basic Collage
Digital scrapbooking collections of your choice (I prefer to use only one or two for a more cohesive look)

Instructions:

First, using ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: 4x6 Basic Collage and any other Scrap Girls products, create your recipe cards. I like using ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: 4x6 Basic Collage because of its simple design. Use clipping masks to "cover" each section of the template with photos, digital scrapbooking paper, or embellishments. Type your recipe in one of the sections of the template.

Next, create a cover for your album (if your album can be customized). This can be done by using one of the ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: 4x6 Basic Collage templates by simply not adding a recipe, but adding your own cookbook title.

Print your cards and cover at home on your printer, or if you prefer, have your cards printed at your favorite photo printing shop. Since these cards are the same size as a standard photo, the cost is fairly inexpensive. Also, for many shops, you can upload your images to their website and then pick them up later.

My preferred method is to place two of my 4x6-inch cards on a new 8.5x11-inch document and then print this document on my home printer. Here is a screenshot of Photoshop just before I was about to print:

Cut out your cards (if necessary) so that you have them as individual 4x6-inch cards. Slide your recipe cards into the album.

Add your cover to the front of your album. If your album has a clear plastic cover, but doesn't appear to easily allow you to change out the cover it came with, you may be able to carefully cut a slit on the very top edge or the side edge using a utility or craft knife (please use great caution!), slide out the cover it came with, and slide in your new cover.

My album came with a bicycle-themed cover which I removed and replaced with my cookbook cover.

May Message Board Game: Geocaching - Scrap Girls Style!

There's no need for maps and compasses for this month's Geocaching trek! The object of the game is to correctly guess an item within a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique by solving clues and discovering the stars.

Each day, you will be given two clues: The first clue will be to the product (you will know you have found the correct product because there will be a star on the page.) The second clue will be to find a particular item within the product!

Send an email with the EXACT item name (within the product) and the link where the product is found to [email protected]. Use the subject line: Geocaching Scrap Girls Style in your email entry, and be sure to include your message board name and real name. Entries must be received by Midnight MT on May 31st.

Everyone who correctly identifies all 29 items will be entered into a random drawing for one $15 Gift Certificate!

Everyone who correctly identifies 19+ items will be entered into a random drawing for one of two $10 Gift Certificates!

May Monthly Layout Contest: Summer is right around the corner for some of us and winter for others. What is your favorite part of that season? For this month's layout contest, scrap your favorite parts of the upcoming season. Maybe you enjoy swimming in the pool, boating or hiking the trails. Or, maybe it's building a snowman, skiing or sledding. Whatever you love, scrap it for us to see! Create your layout and post it in the May Layout Contest Gallery by Midnight MT on May 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
