Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Unfortunately, the negatives of my husband's childhood photos were nowhere to be found. I had to scan the actual photos, which were not in the best condition. I used the Clone Tool to brush out large scratches and creases. But because the photos' resolutions were pretty low, I left some imperfections unretouched and converted the photos into sepia to give them a somewhat vintage look. They are not perfect photos, but at least I was able to make the best of what was available, and more importantly, I was able to document precious memories from my husband's childhood.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Create a layout using scanned photos.
Other Ingredients:
Journaling: Yes, kids, that is dad at about 5 years old. This photo taken when Grandpa Ed was assigned to Mexico for work. Grandma Dita, Dad's mom, says that Dad was a hit with the neighbors because he picked up Spanish easily. His favorite words were "Ayudame, ayudame, socorro!", (help me) which he blurted out whenever he slipped or fell. The neighbors also nicknamed him Pele, after the great soccer player, because Dad had large legs even as a young boy. Too bad he didn't turn out to be a good soccer player, lol. But he did turn out to be a great dad and a very hands-on father at that.

I really liked the look of the luminescent style on the arrow from ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: 12x12 Mini Clusters, but it felt a little overpowering to me. So after applying the style, I played with my Blending Modes, selected "Multiply," and discovered I really liked it!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Create a layout using at least three styles.
Other Ingredients:
Journaling: For Easter this year your Great Grandma Cathy bought you both a ceramic "Snow Bunny." It's not the sort of gift I would normally think to get a 5 or 2 year old but you both love those bunnies!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I love combining papers to make my own unique backgrounds, because the possibilities are endless! My tools of choice, when combining papers, are Blending Modes and the Opacity slider, both of which can be found in your Layers Palette. On this layout, I placed a template from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Expressive Pages on top of a paper from Beaute Botanique Collection Biggie. Because the Expressive Paper is a paper template, I first added a color to it by selecting a tan color from my layout using the Eyedropper Tool. With my template paper selected, I pressed Ctrl+U to open the Hue/Saturation dialog box. Then I checked the "Colorize" box and played with my Saturation slider until I got the desired color. Once the paper template was colorized, the fun began. I started playing with my Blending Modes and Opacity slider until I found the look I wanted. On this layout, I chose "Multiply" for the Blending Mode, and I set Opacity at 75%.

I decided to change the look of the white swirly mat, so I added the yellow paper behind the swirls for an extra pop of color. Simply place the yellow paper on the layer below the mat in your Layers Palette. Select the swirls by clicking on them with the Magic Wand Tool and then Select> Modify> Expand by five pixels. With the swirls still selected, click on the yellow paper layer, Ctrl+C to copy the paper, and Ctrl+V to paste to a new layer. Now, you have the yellow paper added to just the swirls.

Journaling: I just love these pictures of you and dad together. You both love to tease each other and dad loves to tickle you until you beg for mercy! But then, as soon as he lets go, you say, "Tickle me!" and the whole scene repeats itself. It's really fun to watch you guys have fun together. It makes this momma very, very happy.

"Thinking of You" Card by Elisha Barnett

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I received a very pretty Mother's Day card from my mother-in-law. Generally, I'm not one to keep cards, but I couldn't bear to throw this one away. The sentiment was beautiful, but what I really loved was the design. It had a pearlized background and was adorned with glitter. As soon as I opened the card, I wondered how I could reproduce the look digitally. Scrap Girls' ScrapSimple Styles made it easy! The top and bottom parts of the background are created using ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Innocence 5103 Super Biggie and ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Sugar Coated 6501. I applied the Innocence style, then simplified it and resized it so the bevel didn't show. Then I duplicated the layer and applied the Sugar Coated style and reduced the Opacity until there was just a hint of sparkle. I used a similar technique for the middle part, only I used ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Rocks 5103 instead of the Innocence style. For the glitter accent, I recolored the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Chinoiserie Clouds and applied ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Sugar Coated 6501. I finished it off by applying ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Pearl 5101 to the card title.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make my ribbon appear to be woven through the cut-outs in the Cut Out paper from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Basically Bordered Squares 2, I selected the paper template layer by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette while holding down the Ctrl key. With the "marching ants" now surrounding the paper template, I selected the ribbon layer by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette. Next, I chose my Eraser Tool, set to Square, and used it to erase the section of ribbon on top of the thin border section of the paper. In order to add some depth to the ribbon and really make it look like it is weaving underneath the paper, I selected the Burn Tool, set the Size to 150, Range to "Midtones," and Exposure to 35%, and then carefully "burned" a ripple into the ribbon sections that are going "under" the paper. We know they really aren't weaving underneath the paper... but with digital scrapbooking, we can easily make it look that way!

I love this photo of my husband and his sister as children. When it was scanned, it was not scanned at a very high resolution. So it would not become pixelated, I had to keep it fairly small in this layout.

To give a shadow to the lace-like border from the Dear Friend Collection Mini, I found many options were overpowering. What I found to be most pleasing was one of the options from ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Shadowing Transparent Objects PSE 5301 Mini. For the items that I wanted to "lift off" the page more, I used ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Deep Shadows 6501 PSE and PS Biggie.
