Painting Doodles and Adding Texture

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Windows Vista.

There are so many great doodle embellishments and doodle brushes in the Scrap Girls Boutique. It's easy and fun to color them yourself to match your digital scrapbook layout perfectly. This tutorial will go over just one method for painting a doodle brush.

When using brushes, always start with a new layer so you can move your image around to exactly where you want it. Stamp your brush onto a new layer and place it somewhere that you can see what areas you are filling in (you can always move it into place when you are done.)

Now take your Paint Bucket Tool and get ready to fill in some of the sections of your doodle. I am using the Brush Set: Journal Doodles for this example. The most important thing in using this technique is that you can only fill closed sections. The paint will fill up everything if the sections are not closed or if there are gaps.

Take a look at your color palette; select the first color you would like to use. I usually use the Eyedropper Tool to select a color right from the layout I am working on. With your Paint Bucket Tool, click inside one of the sections and you will see it fill in with color. Choose your next color and repeat until all sections are filled.

By using this tool, you can fill in a doodle quickly and easily, retaining the doodle-look of the black outline. The drawback to using this method is that your outline and your colors are all on one layer. The benefit is that it's super-fast.

If you would like to take it up a level, you can then add an effect to your doodle. I love the slightly distressed, artistic look of stamping, but with most of the stamping actions or styles, they will make everything on the layer one color. There is a little trick you can do, however, to keep your multicolored doodle and still use an effect.

For example, take the stamping action ScrapSimple Tools – Actions: Stamped 5001 and apply it to your colored doodle. In running the action, choose the color black (just wait, you have to trust me on this one). When the action is completed, you can look in your Layers Palette and see the "Original" layer is turned off.

Turn your "Original" layer back on. Move it on top of your new black-stamped layer and use a clipping mask to clip your colored-doodle layer to your black-stamped layer.

Now you have your custom-colored doodle, complete with your custom-stamped texture, and you're ready to finish your layout.

May Message Board Game: Geocaching - Scrap Girls Style!

There's no need for maps and compasses for this month's Geocaching trek! The object of the game is to correctly guess an item within a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique by solving clues and discovering the stars.

Each day, you will be given two clues: The first clue will be to the product (you will know you have found the correct product because there will be a star on the page.) The second clue will be to find a particular item within the product!

Send an email with the EXACT item name (within the product) and the link where the product is found to [email protected]. Use the subject line: Geocaching Scrap Girls Style in your email entry, and be sure to include your message board name and real name. Entries must be received by Midnight MT on May 31st.

Everyone who correctly identifies all 29 items will be entered into a random drawing for one $15 Gift Certificate!

Everyone who correctly identifies 19+ items will be entered into a random drawing for one of two $10 Gift Certificates!

Everyone who correctly identifies 9+ items will be entered into a random drawing for one of two $5 Gift Certificates!

May Monthly Layout Contest: Summer is right around the corner for some of us and winter for others. What is your favorite part of that season? For this month's layout contest, scrap your favorite parts of the upcoming season. Maybe you enjoy swimming in the pool, boating or hiking the trails. Or, maybe it's building a snowman, skiing or sledding. Whatever you love, scrap it for us to see! Create your layout and post it in the May Layout Contest Gallery by Midnight MT on May 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery.
