Labels, Labels, Labels

As a child, I wanted to grow up to be a music teacher. It was a happy day when I graduated from college and accepted my first position teaching strings and band. I was, at last, a real music teacher.

Then unexpected circumstances prevented me from continuing to work in my chosen field and suddenly, I wasn't a music teacher anymore. I could see that I would never be a music teacher again and the loss felt much like a death.

I was then forced to figure out what I would become next. As I searched, I gradually came to see that most of the labels I attach to myself are temporary. The only labels that matter are the ones I will carry into the eternities. They are the only ones that are true definitions of who I am. They are my eternal labels.

I am a daughter of Heavenly Father.


I am the daughter of Fred and Julia.


I am a granddaughter.


I am a wife.


I am a mother.


I am a grandmother.


I am a niece, a cousin, and an aunt.


I am a daughter-in-law and a sister-in-law.

But what about the other labels that I give myself? Are they important?

I am a CEO.


I am a product designer.


I am a partner.


I am an artist.


I am a boss.


I am a writer.


I am a digital scrapbooker.


I am an amateur photographer.


I am a musician.


I am a blogger.


I am an organist.


I am a chorister.

My life-label list describes things that I do. If, for any reason, I stop doing the associated activities, I can remove that particular label from the list.

Occasionally, I observe women expressing great angst as they try to figure out who they are. Sometimes, they suffer immensely as they try to discover and express their feelings about their chosen labels. At times, they feel that they must explain to others why they feel a certain label suits them; they must prove that they do the correct things.

I believe they are examining their worth backwards - as I once did. I believe that labels that are associated with relationships are the only ones that matter and the one that has the most significance in this life - and beyond this life - is that of being a child of God. I think that once you become solid in your heart with eternal labels, it is easier to be secure as you give yourself doing-labels.

I am a child of God. I am a daughter, a granddaughter, a mother, a grandmother, a wife, a mother, an aunt, and a cousin. And I am your friend.

Making a Branded Photo

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS4 with Mac OS X.

The look of a cattle brand burned into a piece of wood is certainly unique, but it's not just for your rodeo layouts anymore. Anything can provide the inspiration for a brand, and ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Branded 10601 - PS can be used with text layers, custom shapes, brushes, and elements. This action can be used on a photograph to create an awesome, custom-branded effect. It only takes a few simple steps to turn your photo into a brand.

First, choose a photo that has good contrasts. For example, I took this photo of some bikers, and it is a great choice for this action because the helmets and sunglasses will provide a great contrast and accentuate their faces. The chrome and black also provide some high contrast areas on the motorcycles.

Next, duplicate the photo; never work on your original photo image. Go to the bottom of your Layers Palette and click on the circle that is half black/half white. Choose "Threshold" from the pop-up menu. When the Threshold window opens, you will see your photo instantly change to a black-and-white image. Be sure the Preview box is checked. Use the slider to find the best Threshold Level for your photo.

I've chosen a setting of 84. Moving the slider to the left will add white (decrease the threshold) while moving the slider to the right will increase the black (increase the threshold). Click OK. Merge the original photo layer and threshold layers. Here is what my edited photo now looks like. Pretty cool, huh?!

Hide the bottom two layers (the original photo and the threshold adjustment layer) by clicking on the Eye icon on each of the layers in your Layers Palette. Your merged photo layer should be on the top. Now, using the Magic Wand Tool, select any of the white areas on the edited photo. Be sure "Contiguous" is not checked. You will see "marching ants" around all of the white areas. Click Delete. The black portions of the photo are all that remain. The remainder of the pixels should be transparent.

You are now ready to create a custom brand using ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Branded 10601 - PS. Open a new 12x12-inch document and place a wood grain digital background paper on the bottom layer. I used a template from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Rustic.

Drag your edited photo onto the layer above the wood grain paper. (You can close the photo document because you no longer need it.) Choose the photo layer and run the action. There will be stops while the action is running that will allow you to customize the brand color, singe color, and singe size of the brand. When you have completed your customized brand, you can move it around your layout or resize it. After running the action on my biker photo, I erased some of the sharp edges around the brand using the Eraser Tool. Here is my finished brand.

Now that you know how to use this action with a photograph, remember that this action can be applied to any text layer, custom shape, brush, or element. Use your imagination to create unique, custom-branded effects on your digital scrapbooking layouts.

Whack-A-Wonderland

It's here! It's finally here... the layout contest that everyone looks forward to all year! How to Enter

Below is a list of 50 underlined items to find in the Scrap Girls Boutique. It is possible to find multiple products that contain any given item, but you only need to provide one product name and link for each answer.

To enter the contest, send a Word or text document to [email protected] by Midnight (MT) on Friday, April 30th. For each scavenger hunt list item, provide the product name and link to the product next to it.

These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes simply giving participants a one hour goal and a fun, new challenge each week. On April 28th, we'll do an Embellishment Challenge. Create a layout using at least three different types of embellishments - flowers, buttons, brads, staples, tags, ribbons, whatever works with your page! Upload your layouts to the special High Noon Crop Gallery. You'll be amazed what you can get done in just one hour, but there is no High Noon Sheriff timing you!

APRIL EVENTS

April Message Board Game: Progressive Word Scramble!

The object of the game is to correctly guess the name of a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique by solving clues and unscrambling letters we give you. Each day, you will be given a letter found in the product name as well as a clue. You won't know how many letters are in the product name until it is complete. We will keep giving clues until a correct guess is made.

The designer's name or the word "Collection" are not included as part of the puzzle. Letters from any other words in product names (such as "Biggie," "Brush" or "Transparency") may be given as part of the puzzle.

Be the first to answer it correctly and win a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only allowed ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed ONE win per month. When you make your guess, you MUST provide a link to the boutique item you are referencing. We will play the game daily during the entire month of April. When a correct answer is given, the new puzzle will start the following day.

Layout Contests:

April Monthly Layout Contest: It's time to get your silly on! For this month's layout contest, we want to see layouts featuring the silly or mischievous antics in your life. Let us see the silly faces, crazy clothes and hilarious moments. Create your layout and post it in the April Layout Contest Gallery by Midnight on April 30th. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
