Journaling around a shape can be a tricky task if you're using Photoshop Elements, which doesn't offer the ability to create shaped text blocks. Fortunately, there are products in the Scrap Girls Boutique that come to the rescue! To shape my journaling around the circle portion of ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Clusters, I used ScrapSimple Type Shapes: Journaling Around Circles. Now I was able to fit my journaling in the space around the circle!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 6
Name of challenge: Create a birthday layout.
Other Ingredients:
Journaling: For your 18th birthday, you chose to have a Mardi Gras theme. We were happy to comply! We decorated with green, gold, purple, doubloons, and plastic beads. We had a crown and a king cake for you too. We all had a great time. You picked a great party theme! Let the good times roll!

For this layout, I wanted to maintain the feel of the vintage photo, but I wanted to put a bit of a modern spin on it. I thought Cherise's Black and White Plus Collection would be perfect for the look I was trying to achieve. One neat thing that I did on this layout was to make the bow and swirl cluster look like a bow with curling ribbon on a birthday present. To achieve the look, I laid out several swirl embellishments from the collection, each on their own layer underneath my bow layer. Then, after I liked the positioning of each swirl, I applied ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Mega Lift I-Squared Biggie to each layer, independent of one another. The specific action that I applied to each layer was chosen randomly from the Action set, so that the lifts of the swirls would fall somewhat randomly when done and look like curled ribbon all wild and mixed up on top of my "package!"

To create my cupcake border I placed a grayscale assembled cupcake from Design Pack: Make A Wish and changed its Blending Mode to "Screen." Then I duplicated it several times and aligned it using Align> Top or Bottom Edges.

Journaling: Therese's 4th birthday party was the first big party you ever attended. There was so much food - fried chicken, spaghetti, ice cream, french fries and of course, cupcakes! Smart boy that you are, you ate a bit of everything but saved lots of room for dessert. You looked so happy eating those cupcakes. I'm sure you got a sugar rush!

To give the illusion of the balloon from the Make A Wish Collection Biggie sitting over Cherise Oleson's Scrap Simple Embellishment Template: Rubber Bands, I used my Burn Tool, setting the midtones to 71% and the brush at a diameter of 80 pixels and 0% hardness. I rasterised the balloon layer and then carefully 'burned' the two areas on either side of the rubber band. The 'burned' area now looks like a shadow created by the rubber band pushing up the balloon a little. I used this same technique on the word art on this layout.

Journaling: Aaron's birthday is December the 11th. He usually celebrates his birthday on either the last day of the school year or as close to it as possible. He gets very excited by this as he knows that his birthday party is close at hand!! This year his party was at 'All Fired Up' where the kids got to choose their piece of pottery to paint. Aaron loves this kind of creativity and had a ball completing his 'skull mug.'
The other bonus to having his birthday in December is that it is right near Chanukah and he always rubs his hands in glee at the prospect of all the pressies he will be getting, LOL! We look forward to sharing many more wonderful birthdays with our beautiful boy.

Whenever I am in a hurry to get a layout done or the creative side of my brain is just not functioning right, I always turn to my stash of ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates. Scrap Girls has many templates to choose from. Each one can be used in so many different ways. When looking for a design, I usually search by the number of photos the design allows. In this case, I knew I wanted several photos on my page to document my son's birthday. Once I saw ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: 12x12 Blessings, I knew I found a winner because one of the templates had a strip anchoring down five photos and the paper strip reminded me of my son's light saber cake. I decided to extract my son's cake from a photo and replace the paper strip with my cake photo.

Journaling: You were so anxious for your birthday, as any kid would be. You requested a Blue Light Saber cake. This was the easiest cake I have ever made and perfect for our small family. Papa Hawk flew out; still hasn't missed a birthday! The big day came and we let you open your gifts right after breakfast. You received some Star Wars movies and some more Legos. Papa made you a balance board but the hit of the day was DVD-R's, go figure! After presents we went to Amazement Square. We then came home, had cake and took a nap. After we were all refreshed we drove up to Chuck E. Cheese's and had a blast playing arcade games. On the way home you said "This was the best day ever! I don't think anyone has ever had a better birthday!" Glad you had a good day. We love you! 2010

To make the caterpillar and ladybug from My Sweet Baby - Boy Collection stand out a little more, I added a small white stroke to them. I did this using Edit> Stroke and the "outline" selection. I did this with the title "Bug Party" as well.

I liked the journaling strips from one of Cherise Oleson's ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: 4x6 Round Up and wanted to use them in this layout. I opened the PSD version of the template. Then I selected the strips and text paths in the Layers Palette and dragged them onto my layout while holding the Shift key. Finally, I linked the journaling strips and the text path layers so I could easily move and edit them as I wanted.

The cute robot doodles were a "must-use" for this page. However, I wanted them to look a little more like a sticker, so I added a 10 px stroke around the robot. Stroke is one of my favorite scrapping tools - I also used it around my photo.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I love the power that digital scrapbooking gives me as a scrapbooker to create my own embellishments! In this layout, I used ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Glass 6101 Biggie to create a circular piece of glass. Don't you LOVE the "bumpy" look of this glass circle? I wanted to attach a clasp to it. Using a round Eraser Brush, I erased a small circle from the shape which creates a great hole in the glass. I added my clasp and moved it into a logical position on my layout. I lowered the Opacity of my Eraser Brush and carefully erased just a portion of the clasp so it looks as if you are looking at the back of the clasp through the glass. Finally, I added a small ice cream cone to the glass, lowered the Opacity just a tiny bit to allow the bumpy glass to show through, and there I have it! My perfect embellishment!

In this layout, I wanted to use the alphas from the Make a Wish Collection Biggie, but I chose to change the colors to better match my layout. There are several ways to do this. Our Scrap Girls Boutique is filled with beautiful styles and I chose to use one of them. I spelled the words "Happy Birthday" and then I selected the letter "H" and applied the style I wanted. I did the same thing with each letter and chose different styles for each of them.
