Scrapbooking Big Cities with the New York City Collection
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Mac OS 10.5.8 - Leopard.
The New York City Collection is great for making digital scrapbook pages about New York, but what about other cities? Good news! The New York City Collection can help you scrap those pages, too.
I'll start with a page made about the Cows on Parade exhibit in Chicago, using some New York City Collection papers and embellishments.
The page started with the black and map papers as a background. To cover the seam, I used the NYC gray building strip and a recolored twill ribbon from Cherries Jubilee Collection Biggie.
The title uses the "CITY" word art and the yellow arrow. Using the red brad, I added a text layer over it and placed the brad as the dot on the North Midwest map from ScrapSimple Paper Template: US Maps. Changing the Opacity to 90% and the Fill to 95% on the brad's text layer makes the words appear to be on the brad.

I gave the buildings a big drop shadow to make them really pop off the page. Then, I duplicated the building element, placed it behind the original, offset it slightly, and changed the Blending Mode to make a fuller skyline. To make the ribbon relate more to the page, I masked the yellow-checked NYC paper into a dotted line.

You can also use the New York City Collection for layouts about Las Vegas. This digital scrapbook page starts with the red paper that is recolored to match the sandy desert. With the mottling already in the paper, you get some really nice tonal values.

Further interest was created by masking the left side of the page to reveal part of a world map made with ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Vintage Maps 6301. The blank street sign and sign post from the New York City Collection are used to identify the location in Las Vegas where the photos were taken. The king from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Playing Cards Biggie completes the card fan arrangement of the photos.
The arrow is used to connect elements on the page. The vintage postcard was created with the template from ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: 4x6 Travel Photo Post Cards as a base, along with the checkered yellow paper. The lettering on the postcard was created by applying ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Vintage Maps 6301 and ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Well Traveled 6301 to the "EUROPE" and "EGYPT" word art templates.
Adding some embellishments from the Las Vegas Collection finishes the layout.

Perhaps my favorite use for the New York City Collection is to apply it to Minneapolis-themed layouts. Sometimes called the "Minneapple," Minneapolis goes wonderfully with many of the New York City Collection's papers and embellishments.
This layout has the red apple paper as its base. I changed the color of the paper to gray because I wanted the photos to pop, but I still wanted to leave the apple pattern intact.
With the street sign embellishment, you can label any street, so I picked these three which are well-known Minneapolis avenues. The apple clip and string are perfect for Minneapolis, too. I also used the apple digital sticker as the city marker on the US state template of Minnesota. This state template is from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: US Maps.
The gray New York City paper is recolored and used for the state background. Recreating the famous spoon sculpture with the Monday Morning Collection and Cherries Jubilee Collection adds the perfect touch. Behind it is the black paper from the New York City Collection, so the background does not distract from the cherry on the spoon.
So, you can see that the New York City Collection can be used for a variety of cities around the United States and the world. I'd love to see what other uses you can create with the New York City Collection!
