Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Using ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates - Photo Masks: Grungy Stencils, I placed the photo mask on a separate layer over my chosen photo. I resized the photo mask to cover my photo as much as possible. Then I put the photo mask layer under the photo. On the photo layer, I right-clicked my mouse to drop down the Layer Options menu. Then I clicked on "Create Clipping Mask," and my photo was clipped to the shape and size of the photo mask. I played with my photo layer until I was completely happy with the position and size of the photo within the photo mask, and then I merged the two layers into one.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
When a picture is super large and takes up the majority of my layout, I choose my embellishments carefully. It would be very easy to do overdo it! In this layout, because there is so much white in the photo, I chose to use a patterned paper to add a punch of color. I used ScrapSimple Embellishment Template: Tucked Photos Biggie which added a soft edge to my picture. Next, I added a simple border at the top and bottom to frame my layout and then carefully placed simple floral embellishments in the bottom corner. I used a fairly big "tag" on which to place my text in keeping with the boldness of the photo. All in all, I think the fun, bright colors go really well with our silly self-portrait!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
There are times when I love so many of the patterned papers available in a particular Scrap Girls collection that I have to find a way to incorporate several of them into a single layout. Here, I chose three patterned papers from the About a Scout - Girl Collection Mini. I especially liked the green paper's edge which features the word "scouts," so I kept that as the border for my layout. I loved the doodles on the blue paper, so that was my main background. To incorporate the doodled words on the brown paper, I made a circle shape and then clipped the paper to that for a little visual interest. Then I unified the three papers by adding some stitching with the help of the Dynamic Brush Set: Stitching 6401.

Journaling: This year you joined Brownies for the first time. With starting a new school this year, I thought that this would be a great way for you to make some friends. So far, it has been a great experience for you and you've made lots of friends and have done many fun things like going camping within the first month! (It was also the first time you've been away from home!) You are just loving it and having a great time!

For this layout, I did two very subtle things. First, I really liked the center of the green flower in the Assemble Your Own Zoom Pages: Vintage Tapestries, and I wanted to duplicate it on flowers from other collections. To do that, I highlighted my layer with the flower. Then using my Selection Tool set to Circular, I drew a circle around the center that I wanted to duplicate. I hit Ctrl+J and brought just that portion selected to a new layer. Then I duplicated that as many times as I needed to fill all my flower centers.
The second thing I did was with the font. The Lettering Delights Underwood Pica Font looks old and vintage, but the zero's center is completely filled. Since the dates on the layout are very important, I thought that this characteristic of the font was distracting. To fix that, but to still maintain the overall look that I was trying to achieve, I simply put a layer mask on the text layer and "painted" out the middle part of the zeros in the journaling.

I love overlapping papers, so for this layout I wanted to put the papers in different sizes behind the photos. I selected the Rectangular Marquee Tool and made a selection in the size I wanted. Then I painted in a random color with the Paint Bucket Tool and hit Ctrl+D to delete the selection. The color made no difference because I was clipping a paper in it. With this done, I chose the paper I wanted, put it on top of the painted box, and hit Ctrl+Alt+G (or Cmd+G for Mac users or Cmd+Alt+G for PSCS2 users). That created a clipping mask which clipped the paper to the size and shape of the rectangle.

Who says you have to use vintage-styled elements for heritage layouts? I love the attitude my grandmother and aunt are displaying in this photo, so I thought I'd try pairing it with something edgy and modern. I didn't know how it would look, and I didn't want to invest a lot of time experimenting. I thought I should try it on something small and easy, so I chose Assemble Your Own Zoom Pages: 4x6 Techno Grunge. I chose one of the papers and rotated it to a vertical orientation. I brought in my photo and blended it by erasing unwanted areas with grungy brushes, then duplicating it. The lower layer is set to Blending Mode "Multiply," and the upper is set to Blending Mode "Luminosity." Then I brought in a few elements from the collection. Since I was working with just a few coordinated elements and a small area, it came together really fast! Now that I know I like the results, I will fill a whole 4x6 album with similarly styled layouts.

Activity Chart by Julie Moberly

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
An activity chart is a great way to organize the day for busy parents and kids! After printing, I laminated the activity pieces and the chart. Next, I glued small squares of hook-and-loop fasteners (such as Velcro® brand) to the chart and to the backs of the pieces. The lamination and hook-and-loop squares make the craft durable and easy for little ones to use daily.

I always like to set off my photos by either using a frame or paper matte. In this case, I did both. I really like photos with a white border, so in Photoshop Elements, I selected "Stroke" under the Edit menu. From there, I chose a width of 30 pixels, white color, and Location as "Inside."
