Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To give a realistic, aged look to the frames from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Old Photo Frames Biggie, I selected the frame layer in the Layers Palette and went to Enhance> Adjust Color> Color Variations. Then I adjusted the "amount" slider down to give less color. Next, I increased the red and decreased the blue. This gave a nice yellow/brown tint to the template. I also adjusted the saturation on one of the frames because I thought the color was nice, but just a little too intense.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To create the stitched shamrock shapes, I used the Large Heart, Small Heart, and Swirl from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Sew Doodly Shapes. On a blank document, I duplicated and arranged the hearts. Then I added the swirl for the stem. I selected the Eraser Tool and erased parts of the hearts and swirl until I achieved the shamrock look I wanted. Finally, I saved the shamrock files in PNG format, so they would retain the transparent background, and I could use them on future layouts.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I wanted to use one of the elements in Edge Decor Embellishment Mini - Loved. The one I chose had a pink paper strip in it and a pink flower. I didn't think pink worked well for the St. Patrick's Day theme, so I used the Magnetic Lasso Tool and selected all of the pieces of the pink paper strip that were showing. Then I copied that selection (Ctrl+J) to its own layer. I changed the color to orange using Adjust/Hue Saturation, then I played with the Blending Modes to get the look I wanted. For the flower, I opened a blank layer above the flower. I used a Soft Round Brush in orange and painted over the top of the flower. Then played with the Blending Modes on that layer to get the color and look I wanted.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I used ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Scrubbed Raw to create the green background paper by placing a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer on top of it. I did this by placing the ScrapSimple paper I wanted to use on my layout, and then while it was still highlighted, I clicked on the little grey-and-white circle at the top of my Layers Palette. This opened a fly-out box from which I chose Hue/Saturation. Next I moved the sliders until I had the background color I wanted. The curved edges of the green paper are a result of clipping both the paper and adjustment layers to the curved mat in ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Corners All Around and then clicking Ctrl+G (Layer> Group With Previous). To get the rough edge, I chose the brush from ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Paper Tears 5001, set it to white, and carefully brushed the edges of the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Scrubbed Raw layer.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To make only the stitching green on the paper template from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Sew Doodly Biggie, I used my Magic Wand tool (Tolerance = 100, Contiguous unchecked) to select the black stitching. When I had the "marching ants" around the stitching, I right-clicked and chose Layer via Copy, which created a new layer with just the stitching. I added a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer above the stitching layer and clipped to the stitching layer below. I picked a green color from my layout and checked "Colorize" in the adjustment layer, moving the sliders until I got a color that I liked.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To really get the full, crinkly effect of the paper on my layout, I layered a green sheet of Scrubbed Raw Paper Biggie between two layers of a sheet of paper from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Curled Edges. I clipped the paper layer to the bottom layer of the paper template layer to take on the shape of the template. I then adjusted the Blending Mode of both paper template layers. The layer underneath the green Scrubbed Raw Paper Biggie layer has the Blending Mode set to "Overlay," and the layer above has the Blending Mode set to "Luminosity.” The crinklies really pop once that top layer has the Blending Mode adjusted. The Blending Mode on the lower layer really affected the color of the paper layer. I also added an adjustment layer to the green middle paper layer and increased the brightness slightly.

A DESIGNER'S LIFE

Angela Blanchard
Angela Blanchard

In The Beginning

When I was just out of college and moving into my first apartment, funds were tight. It's a time that can include some of the most exciting, scary, and happy moments in a young person's life. I know it was all of these for me. However, it brought out in me some good traits like thriftiness, decorating on a budget, and portraiture.

Yep, portraiture. Nothing like wanting to buy more groceries to encourage me to take my drawing to a new level. I had been sketching and painting for as long as I could remember, but I had just been doing it as a personal hobby. Now I wanted to start doing artwork professionally. I had the most experience with oil painting, but couldn't afford materials, a studio, or gallery space. So I went to work with plain old paper and pencil. After doing some portraits for friends and family, the commissions started to come in, and my evenings were spent drawing. It was the beginning.

The most rewarding experiences were being able to draw portraits from old grainy photographs for people who did not have any other pictures of their departed loved ones. One client had fled from Vietnam as a young girl and only had one torn and faded photo of her mother and another of her father. Being able to give her a portrait of them together was so special. Another person asked me to draw a portrait from two separate photographs - putting her as a child together with a picture of her father, whom she did not meet until she was an adult. In this case, when the client started crying over the portrait, I knew I had done a good job.

From that point on, I've never stopped drawing. Whether it was a portrait of a beloved pet or the family homestead, I tried to capture the emotion of a moment. It was the beginning of meeting new people, trying new techniques, and learning new mediums. I don't do as many portraits these days, but I'll never forget where it all began.

- Angela

The Prairieland Collection just takes me back to childhood summers. The hot, worry-free days just seemed to go on forever and were spent picking weed bouquets for Mom or catching grasshoppers. I tried to capture these feelings and more in the collection.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Mini Tutorial: Dressing Up Feathers

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Windows Vista.

Here's a fun way to dress up the feathers in Assemble Your Own Zoom Pages: The Bee's Knees.

Because the feathers are white, it's hard to get a color to really "stick" to the image. So to begin, you will need to darken the feather.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Levels adjustment.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Levels adjustment.

First, you need to add an Adjustment layer. To do this, go to your Layers Palette located on the left of your screen. At the bottom, you will see a circle that is half dark and half light. Click on it and choose "Levels." A window will pop up; change the top middle slider to .40 and the top left slider to .38, as shown above.

Did you notice your background got really dark? Let's fix that! Click on the Levels layer in your Palette and hit Ctrl+Alt+G in Photoshop and Ctrl+G in Photoshop Elements. This will make the adjustment attach to the feather layer only, leaving the rest of your document unchanged.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Add color.

Now you are ready to add some color. Click on the Adjustments button again at the bottom. This time choose "Solid Color." I chose a green in my background paper. Make sure this layer is above the Levels layer and clip it to the feather, just like you did the Levels layer. Now change your Blending Mode to "Color." If you click on the Levels layer again, you can adjust the sliders again to get the shade you want.

Adding some highlights is easy to do using a layer mask. The layer mask is the white box to the right of your Adjustments in your Layers Palette. Adding black in that box reveals what is underneath, while white covers it back up. Using these will make it easy to fix any mess-ups.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Layer mask.

Choose a Soft Round Brush about 300-pixels big. Change the Opacity of your brush to about 50%. Click on the white box next to the color you added to your feather. Make sure black is selected and brush over parts of your feather to add some highlights. You can do the same thing on the Levels layer to get even lighter areas.

There are many things you can add to the feather, such as:

  • Using brushes for pattern
  • Add bows
  • Clip paper
  • Add jewels
  • Add lifted shadows
  • Add journaling

I hope you have fun playing with your pretty feathers.

MARCH EVENTS

March Message Board Game: Posting Contest!

It's that time again - Posting Contest time! This is where you are rewarded for your flying fingers and chattiness. The contest will run from March 1 when we post the thread to March 31 at 12:00 midnight (MST). We are doing things a little differently this time, so here are the rules:

1) To enter the Posting Challenge, reply in the game thread with your CURRENT post count. This is the number under your Avatar that shows when you post. Do not post the number found on your profile; it is a different number that is calculated differently.

2) During the month, chat your fingers off!

3) On March 31, BEFORE midnight (MST), go back to your original post in the game thread (the one with your starting post count) and take a screenshot of it. Send the screen shot to [email protected]. The screenshot is your contest entry! We will calculate your post count based on the numbers on the screenshot. (Directions for taking screenshots will be posted in the game thread.)

Prizes: The top poster gets a $20 Scrap Girls gift certificate. Everyone over 250 new posts will be entered in a random drawing for a $10 Scrap Girls gift certificate. Everyone over 100 new posts will be entered into a random drawing for a $5 Scrap Girls gift certificate.

Layout Contests:

March Monthly Layout Contest: Smile! The month of March includes Smile Day. Does seeing someone else's smile make you smile? For this month's contest, we want to see your layouts featuring a smile. Create your layout and post it in the March Layout Contest Gallery by Midnight MST on March 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
