To color the flowers from Kerry's ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Vintage Millinery Flowers, I used the Eyedropper tool to select one of the colors that was already on my layout. I then brought up the Hue/Saturation dialog box and checked the "Colorize" box to apply the color. I made a few tweaks to the Saturation and Lightness to get the color exactly as I wanted it.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make the branch poke through the alpha "Fresh," I first removed the staple from all the letters by using the Magic Wand tool and selecting the staple. Then, making sure the alpha layer was selected, hit Delete. Then I layered a branch above and below the alpha. Selecting the top branch layer in the Layers Palette that is above the word "Fresh," I erased the parts needed to make it look like it goes through the letter "R."
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5
Name of challenge: Create a layout using the word "Fresh"

Journaling: Now is a brand new year, a time to reflect on the past, a time to dream of grand ideas, and to challenge ourselves with Fresh Possibilities.

To create my background, I enlarged both my children's photos and merged them together. I used Ariadna Wiczling's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Altered Photos PS 8201 - BlueYellow on the photos. I enlarged the photo to fit the background, changed its Blending Mode to "Soft Light" and reduced its Opacity to 68%. I placed the photo layer as the third layer from the bottom and then continued to build my layout, layer over layer, on top of the photo layer.

I used to think that by using templates I was somehow cheating. I like coming up with my own designs and thought that by using someone else's that it wasn't really mine. But, then I started using templates... Wow! They make creating a page so much easier when you are short of time or lack ideas. So, for this page, when I knew that I needed to use five or more photos, I immediately grabbed a template that already had four photos spots placed for me. How easy is this? No worrying about how I'm going to fit all those pictures on there and still have a clean and stylish page. And who says it's not my own design? I don't think anyone else will have a page like mine! So, if you've put off using templates, try them and be pleasantly surprised! Oh and this took me only a fraction of the time it usually takes me to do a page!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted to paper-pierce my background using Ariadna Wiczling's ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Crafty Plaster - Flowers as a template. I dragged the paper template onto my page and changed the Opacity to around 40% which would allow me to see my brushwork as I move along. I then went to my Brush Palette and chose Dynamic Brush Set: Paper Piercing 8201 - 1_Smooth. I kept the Opacity at 100% and changed the spacing to around 180%. Making sure I was working on a new layer in the Layers Palette, I slowly traced around the petals forming an outline. When I was satisfied with the piercing, I deleted the paper template layer.

To make the cool acrylic frames on my layout, I applied Cheryl Barber's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Acrylic Swirls 4102 Super Biggie directly to the frame layers of the digital layout template.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Create a layout about someone who has touched your life.
Other Ingredients:
Journaling: Once upon a time, in a faraway land called Ethiopia - or maybe Abyssinia - there lived a young goatherd named Kaldi. Every day, Kaldi's goats would graze on the hills surrounding his village and loyally return home in the evening. One evening the goats did not return. Kaldi searched through the night until he found them leaping and dancing around a stand of dark leafed shrubs with bright red berries. Kaldi surmised that the berries were responsible for the goats' behavior and sampled some of the berries himself. Soon he was dancing gleefully with his goats. And, so it was that the coffee bean was discovered. I'LL LOVE YOU FOREVER, KALDI!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Using several different alphas on one layout can create either a sense of cohesion, or a sense of confusion, depending on the alphas you choose. In order to create cohesion I chose alphas that, although they come from different collections, have a similar style. They all have an "urban" feel to them, as does the layout, and colours that coordinate with each other as well as with my embellishments.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements
Name of challenge: Create a layout using three or more alphas.
