Katie: You should invest in Similac and diapers. People always need formula and diapers for their babies, no matter what.

Julianne: I'm going to invest in shoes.

Woman in front seat of car: (snicker) Where's my notebook? I need to write this down.

Conversation 2

Woman eating dinner: Where did you get that hat?

Julianne: A guy gave it to me.

Katie: More like you took it from a guy.

Julianne: I told him I was going to take it, and he didn't object. So I took it.

Woman eating dinner: (snicker) Where's my notebook?

Conversation 3

Julianne: Remember? I told you about the time I got so sick that I.... I told your family about it.

Woman in front seat: Uh, there are some things that are better not shared. Now that family will always think of the time you got sick and....

Julianne: It's not like I told the whole world. I only told my best friend's family about the time I got sick and....

Katie: Did you ever dissect anything in high school?

Man in front seat of car: I dissected a pig in college.

Katie and Julianne: Ewwww!

Woman in front seat of car: I dissected a crawfish.

Boy in back seat of car: I dissected a frog.

Julianne: One time, I got sick and....

Using Layer Modes with ScrapSimple Templates

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 with Windows Vista.

A couple of questions I often get from customers, especially if they have just started digital scrapbooking and are working with the ScrapSimple templates for the first time, are:

"How do I color the templates?"
"Once the color has been added, why can I no longer see the detail of the template?"

This tutorial will demonstrate a quick and easy method to use ScrapSimple templates. I'll use the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Dreamy Canvas to demonstrate.

First, open the template you want to use.

Then, create a new transparent document at 12x12 300 ppi and drag your template over to this new document.

Next, you want to add color to the layer. Next, you need to add color to the layer. You can either drag a pre-finished paper to the document or you can create a new Color Fill layer. In this example, I will add a new Color Fill layer. As you can see in the screenshot below, the template layer is below the Color Fill layer.

The next step you take will depend on the type of item you are trying to add color to. If it's an embellishment or a PNG version of a paper (such as a crumpled corner or fold), you want to mask the new paper/color fill layer with the PNG file. With your paper/Color Fill layer active, hold down the Ctrl key and press the G key. (Ctrl+G for a PC user or Cmd+G for a Mac user.) If you're using a JPG paper, such as the one in this tutorial, you can leave the new layer as is.

Below is an example of what this step looks like with a new color fill masked to a flower from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Flowerful.

However, after you do this, you'll see that your paper or embellishment template has lost all of its detail. The next step is where we fix it.

Down in the Layers Palette, next to the Opacity levels, you'll see another drop-down arrow. If you click on this arrow, you can change the mode of that layer. Changing the mode of the layer will allow the template detail to show through. I usually start with "Overlay," "Screen" or "Color Burn."

Each of the layer modes will give you a different look. Play around with the options until you find one you like.

I found that the layer mode "Multiply" gave me the best result in the end, but the paper was still a little dark for me. I then followed this path: Enhance> Adjust Color> Adjust Hue/Saturation and adjusted the color of the paper layer a bit until it lightened up enough for me.

FEBRUARY EVENTS

February Message Board Game: BINGO!

It's that time again! Join us for an exciting game of BINGO on the Message Board Forum in February! Pick 25 words from the list provided in the forum and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your SG message board username" by Saturday, January 30th (Midnight MST) in order to play in the first round, which will begin on Monday, February 1st.

Each day, members of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the Bingo list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call bingo in the forum to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards can be cleared and a new round will begin the following day. All winners win a $5 gift certificate to the boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

If you miss the first round cutoff date, you can still play! Just send in your Bingo card at any time during the month and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts. Everyone who sends in a Bingo card will receive a confirmation email that their card has been received. If you do not receive confirmation within 24 hours, please re-send your list of words.

Layout Contests:

February Monthly Layout Contest: During the month of February, many people turn to thoughts of love. What greater love is there than the love for family. For this month's contest, we want to see layouts about your family – either the one you grew up with or the one you have started. Create your layout and post it in the February Layout Contest Gallery by Midnight MST on February 28th. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
