I love using layout templates! For this layout, I used ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Squares and Strips. This is a technique that I use a lot. Before you add photos, papers and elements, select all the layers of your layout, then go to Edit> Transform> Rotate. You can rotate the way you prefer the layout. In this layout, I also resized the template a little to show a different background paper.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
On this layout, I did not want my photos at the top to distract from my larger focal picture. So I decided to place a simple frame around each photo matching the color from Theresa's ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Patch It Up photo frame. To do this, I used my Eye Dropper to select the color from the Template. Then, selected one of my top photos and created an outline around it by clicking Edit> Stroke Selection. I chose 15 pixels and "Outside" from the option box before clicking "OK." I repeated this with each one of my smaller photos. Now my photos all coordinate in style and are in no way distracting the eye from the larger photo.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Over the years, my Daddy has given me photos and memorabilia from his military career. I wanted to include some insignia patches that my Daddy gave me in this layout. When I scanned them in, I found that the colors were too bright and saturated and didn't blend with the colors on the layout. To remedy this, I added two adjustment layers, Hue/Saturation and Brightness/Contrast, over each patch, clipping them to the patches so they didn't affect the whole layout. I picked a tan tone from the camouflage paper in the Combat: Army Collection Mini and used this color to colorize the patch in the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. Then I adjusted the sliders in both adjustment layers until I was satisfied with the color, saturation, and contrast. When I was finished, I merged the layers, which left me with color-coordinated embellishments that fit my layout perfectly!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
The initial "R" on the tag looked too bright on this layout. First, I rastersized the type layer by chosing Layer> Rastersize> Type from the menu. Next, I used a grunge brush with the eraser tool (Opacity: 57%, Flow: 54%) to tone it down a bit. It's a small change, but it looks so much better to me.

I liked the metal look of the "green gold" in Amanda's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Wires 6401, but the green was not quite the right color to match my layout. So after I applied the style to my title layer, I double-clicked on the "fx" icon on the layer. This opened a menu to alter the style. I clicked on the color selection box of the Inner Glow box and using the Eye Dropper, I selected a color of green from one of the papers in Theresa Kavouras' I Fish Collection Mini. Then I adjusted the amount of Inner Glow to create the look of a darker green.

To get my green paper so that it was perfectly under my flowered border, I chose the layer with the border and selected my Magic Wand tool. I clicked on the area below the border to put marching ants around it. Then I inverted my selection, made my layer with the green paper active, and deleted my selection.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I liked the word art "Friend" in the Bright Side of Life Collection Biggie, but I wanted it to say "Friends." To add an "s," I brought the word art "Times" into PSE. I erased all of it except the "s" and the staples attached to it. I changed the pink to blue by using the "Colorize" option in the Hue/Saturation dialog box. I also changed the color of the "i" and the "n" in "Friend."
The scissors were made using a PSE shape and ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Metals 5001. Pom poms were made using a soft round bush, Brush Set: Bursts Mini and ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Felt Biggie 6501. The googly eyes were made using round brushes and ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Acrylic Bubbles Mini 1801.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make the ribbon at the bottom of the layout look like it was torn back with the paper, I simply cut a little section of the ribbon using Shift+Ctrl+J and brought it to a new layer. Then I went to Image> Rotate> Flip Layer Horizontal. This makes it look like it's turned over. Then, I slid it under the fold and angled it appropriately to coordinate with the angle of the tear.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create the red background paper, I first placed a paper from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Patch It Up and one from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Crumpled Corners on my layout. I then clicked Ctrl+G (Layer> Group With Previous) to group the two together. Next I added a Hue/Saturation adjustment Layer and matched the colour as closely as possible to the red wall in my centre photo. Then I clicked Ctrl+G (Layer> Group With Previous) so the adjustment layer became the same shape as the papers beneath it. I played with the Blending Mode of the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Crumpled Corners until I the paper beneath it showed through nicely; in this case, "Linear Burn." The last thing I did was link the layers together and then rotate them slightly.

Theresa's ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Folds 4 are great and SO easy to use! I love the grungy look they give to a photo, and I love how simple they are to adjust when they don't fit your photo exactly. In this layout, the templates were either too wide or too long for my photos, but the fix is easy. I opened up the PSD file in Photoshop (a PSD file has all the elements of a template. In this case, the background layer, the frame, and the folds.) After opening the file up, I selected all the layers and then dragged them to my layout. With the layers still selected, I resized the selection (all 3 layers) at the same time to fit my photo. When I had it the size that I wanted to work with, I brought up the photo layer above my Photo Folds background layer, then used a clipping mask (Ctrl+G) to clip the photo to the background. Perfect!

Journaling:We went to a Rockies game during the Colorado portion of our summer vacation. While it was fun and we enjoyed the experience, Nathan decided that he had to mug for the camera. What a silly NUT he can be! He was giggling and absolutely having the time of his life. I, of course, didn't have a problem with taking photo after photo of this silly boy. I love this kid!
