To make the cabinet the shade of brown I desired, I placed a brown paper above the cabinet template layer. I changed the brown paper's Blending Mode to "Overlay" at 100% Opacity.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted to use the EHI_Nessa Font for the title, and I wanted to give it some "pop." To achieve that, I used the Magic Wand Tool. Having the font layer highlighted in my Layers Palette, I clicked on the bold open spaces in the letters, making sure "Contiguous" and "Add To Selection" was checked. This allows me to click on just what I want to highlight, surrounding it with the "marching ants." Then, I clicked "Create New Layer." With the new layer highlighted, I picked the Paint Bucket Tool and clicked within the marching ants. This puts the interior portion of the font on its own layer. Now I can make it any color or cover with any paper or style to suit my layout. Here, I clipped a paper from the Chic Embroidery 2 Collection Biggie to match the greens in the felt embellishment clusters.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create the flames, I loaded the shape from the Custom Shape Tool menu. Then I simplified the layer, locked the transparent pixels and applied a yellow-orange gradient to it using the Gradient Tool.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

Journaling: You really enjoyed your school trip to the fire station. You got to try the water hose, put on a fireman's hat and even ride the fire engine. When the fireman talked about fire safety, you listened with rapt attention. Too bad Lexi was sick that day and missed all the fun. When you got home, you could not stop talking to her about it. It was a fun and very educational day!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To give the lined paper from Erica's Dear Diary Collection Biggie a crumpled look, I clipped it to Paper 3 from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Patch It Up. I set the Blending Mode of the lined paper to "Soft Light." When I did this, I found that the staples lost their realistic look. So I carefully erased the lined paper with a small hard round brush directly over the staples. But the paper still had too much of a grey tinge. It wasn't quite bright enough for the realistic look I wanted, so I duplicated the lined paper layer. I now had 2 layers, both set to "Soft Light" with the staples showing through. Now, the paper had the look I wanted.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
The original color of the frame was red, but I wanted to make it green. Using the Eye Dropper Tool, I clicked on a leaf of one of the flower embellishments. Then I went to Enhance> Adjust Color> Adjust Hue/Saturation and checked the "Colorize" box in the lower right corner. I adjusted the settings to 77 for Color, 21 for Saturation, and 10 for Lightness.

Other Ingredients:
Journaling: The best times of 2009 were the times we spent together as a family. In March, we celebrated my 4.0 at Asbury College with Brown-A's (as opposed to brownies). In June, the six of us journeyed to World Championships where Eric and I won gold with the encouragement of our unrelenting cheering section! In October, we vacationed at our favorite spot in Orlando, just enjoying the pool and warm weather! What a wonderful year!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted to take the word "Beloved" and make it appear as though it was rubbed on and a part of the frame around my photo. To achieve this look, I placed one of Kerry Veale's Assemble Your Own: Diorama Frames Biggie onto my layout. Next, using my Brush Tool with Kerry Veale's Brush Set: Always and Forever Word Art Biggie, I stamped my brush onto a new layer. I repeated this again because I wanted to have the word on my frame twice, but each one on its own layer. I arranged my word art layers (which are above my frame layer) so that they are over where I wanted them to appear on my frame. I applied a clipping mask to each of the word art layers so that they are each clipped to the frame layer. This achieves the look I was going for - having the words appear as though they are printed right onto the frame!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To get my glittered epoxy border, I used one of Ursula Schneider's ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Victorian Scalloperoo and placed it over my background paper. As I only wanted the edge of the paper, I rasterised the layer so that I could extract part of it. Using the Magic Wand, I clicked in the center of the paper template and deleted the selection. This left me with just the outer edge of the template. I applied Amanda Sok's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Glittered Epoxy 6041 Super Biggie to this outer edge so that it would mirror the colors of the fireworks in my photo.

Erica Hite's ScrapSimple Alpha Templates: Enchanted has a grunged look to the letter layer. When I typed out the rest of the word "blessed" and "2009," I wanted to make them match the "B" from Erica's alpha templates. To do this, I used Brandie Valenzuela's Brush Set: Grungelle on them.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I chose to use a combination of a handwritten font with a more structured font to add extra interest to my title. I also made them touch to add emphasis to the fact that the words are a single thought.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 and Apple iPhoto
Name of challenge: Create a layout about New Year resolutions.
Other Ingredients:
Journaling: This year I will find more ways to use the camera on my phone to capture the "little" things that happen throughout my day. They may not be great pictures but they are the real moments that happen each day and make each day such a blessing. I need to remember that. Each day, each moment, is a blessing.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create my background paper, I layered a total of three papers in this order from bottom to top: the cream map paper from Destinations Collection, the "family" one from ScrapSimple Paper Template: Dirty Press and a dark brown, leather paper from the Destinations Collection. Then I highlighted the paper template layer by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette, clicked Ctrl+U (Enhance> Adjust Color> Adjust Hue/Saturation) and moved the Lightness slider up until the words on the paper became white. Next I selected my top layer, the dark brown paper, by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette and set the Blending Mode to "Multiply." This allowed the words on the paper template to show through and because the first paper layer is significantly lighter than the top paper layer, it lightened the top layer somewhat. The final product is a paper with depth and interest, but not enough to steal the focus away from my photos!

Journaling: Trip To Florida With Evan. Family Vacation. Day Out With Dave. These were some of my favourite times this year; those hot lazy days when nothing mattered except that we were spending time together.

When I use a layout template, I always like to change the color of the frames from white to another color that coordinates with the photos or papers that I'm using. There are several ways to do this. You can use a digital paper from the kit you're using (layer your paper over the frame and hit Ctrl+G (Cmd+G on a Mac.) You can select the frame and fill it with the Paint Bucket Tool, or you can use a style. In this layout, I applied the ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Antique Paper 5101 Super Biggie.
