Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I wanted to use the EHI_Nessa Font for the title, and I wanted to give it some "pop." To achieve that, I used the Magic Wand Tool. Having the font layer highlighted in my Layers Palette, I clicked on the bold open spaces in the letters, making sure "Contiguous" and "Add To Selection" was checked. This allows me to click on just what I want to highlight, surrounding it with the "marching ants." Then, I clicked "Create New Layer." With the new layer highlighted, I picked the Paint Bucket Tool and clicked within the marching ants. This puts the interior portion of the font on its own layer. Now I can make it any color or cover with any paper or style to suit my layout. Here, I clipped a paper from the Chic Embroidery 2 Collection Biggie to match the greens in the felt embellishment clusters.

Journaling: You really enjoyed your school trip to the fire station. You got to try the water hose, put on a fireman's hat and even ride the fire engine. When the fireman talked about fire safety, you listened with rapt attention. Too bad Lexi was sick that day and missed all the fun. When you got home, you could not stop talking to her about it. It was a fun and very educational day!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To give the lined paper from Erica's Dear Diary Collection Biggie a crumpled look, I clipped it to Paper 3 from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Patch It Up. I set the Blending Mode of the lined paper to "Soft Light." When I did this, I found that the staples lost their realistic look. So I carefully erased the lined paper with a small hard round brush directly over the staples. But the paper still had too much of a grey tinge. It wasn't quite bright enough for the realistic look I wanted, so I duplicated the lined paper layer. I now had 2 layers, both set to "Soft Light" with the staples showing through. Now, the paper had the look I wanted.

The original color of the frame was red, but I wanted to make it green. Using the Eye Dropper Tool, I clicked on a leaf of one of the flower embellishments. Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I wanted to take the word "Beloved" and make it appear as though it was rubbed on and a part of the frame around my photo. To achieve this look, I placed one of Kerry Veale's Assemble Your Own: Diorama Frames Biggie onto my layout. Next, using my Brush Tool with Kerry Veale's Brush Set: Always and Forever Word Art Biggie, I stamped my brush onto a new layer. I repeated this again because I wanted to have the word on my frame twice, but each one on its own layer. I arranged my word art layers (which are above my frame layer) so that they are over where I wanted them to appear on my frame. I applied a clipping mask to each of the word art layers so that they are each clipped to the frame layer. This achieves the look I was going for - having the words appear as though they are printed right onto the frame!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To get my glittered epoxy border, I used one of Ursula Schneider's ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Victorian Scalloperoo and placed it over my background paper. As I only wanted the edge of the paper, I rasterised the layer so that I could extract part of it. Using the Magic Wand, I clicked in the center of the paper template and deleted the selection. This left me with just the outer edge of the template. I applied Amanda Sok's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Glittered Epoxy 6041 Super Biggie to this outer edge so that it would mirror the colors of the fireworks in my photo.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To create my background paper, I layered a total of three papers in this order from bottom to top: the cream map paper from Destinations Collection, the "family" one from ScrapSimple Paper Template: Dirty Press and a dark brown, leather paper from the Destinations Collection. Then I highlighted the paper template layer by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette, clicked Ctrl+U (Enhance> Adjust Color> Adjust Hue/Saturation) and moved the Lightness slider up until the words on the paper became white. Next I selected my top layer, the dark brown paper, by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette and set the Blending Mode to "Multiply." This allowed the words on the paper template to show through and because the first paper layer is significantly lighter than the top paper layer, it lightened the top layer somewhat. The final product is a paper with depth and interest, but not enough to steal the focus away from my photos!

When I use a layout template, I always like to change the color of the frames from white to another color that coordinates with the photos or papers that I'm using. There are several ways to do this. You can use a digital paper from the kit you're using (layer your paper over the frame and hit Ctrl+G (Cmd+G on a Mac.) You can select the frame and fill it with the Paint Bucket Tool, or you can use a style. In this layout, I applied the ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Antique Paper 5101 Super Biggie.

Where has the time gone?

My babies just turned eight years old. Eight years old. I can't believe the time has gone by so quickly, and I guess I can't call them babies any longer. It seems like just yesterday we found out we were expecting. We had been trying for a while, so when we found out that I was pregnant, it was both exciting and a relief for us.

Then came the unforgettable day that we found out we were having twins. This was something that didn't even cross our minds, as twins did not run in our families. But I had been having problems early on so the doctor decided to do an ultrasound. Everything was going well.

Suddenly, he stopped and started talking about extra appointments and going to a high-risk facility for more regular ultrasounds. All kinds of thoughts rushed through my mind, none of them very good. But the last thing I was ready for was when he said, "Because you've got double trouble, my friends."

A few more doctor appointments passed, and we decided we wanted to find out what we are having. This was going to help us to better prepare for the babies. At the next appointment we found out we were having two boys. For the next few months, we prepared as much as we could and got the house ready for the new arrivals.

That year we decided to celebrate Christmas at home instead of going to visit family. We decided it would be our last quiet holiday at home. Little did we know, that evening would change our lives. Almost a month earlier than planned, the boys decided it was time for them to make their arrival. We went to the hospital and were monitored for the night, and the next day the boys made their arrival.

Fast forward eight years. At least that's what it seems like. It's gone by so fast. The boys are now in second grade, and they love school. They have both learned to read and write, and they love reading books. They play both flag football and baseball, and Colby is a little better at football, but Justin can send a ball flying in baseball. They have successfully learned to ride a bike and not so successfully attempted to skateboard. They know how to run their computers, surf the internet and type. (I didn't learn until high school!) They no longer need me to get up to fix their breakfast in the morning or pick out their clothes.

We've gone through broken arms with one boy, and root canals, tonsils being taken out, chicken pox and head gashes for both of them. And we've had a countless number of fights between the two of them that have ended in tears and bruises.

It's amazing when I think how much they have grown up in the past eight years and the changes we've gone through. But it's amazing to think of the changes we've got ahead of us in the next eight years. I can't wait to see where we're at when the boys are 16. But it does make me wonder, where has the time gone?

- Angie

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Mini Tutorial: Motivational Hanging Word Art

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Windows Vista.

I love digital scrapbooking hybrid projects. My newest kick is altering all sorts of mini canvases. The Watercolor Whimsy Motivational Word Art Mini contains great pieces of word art for altered items - and they make pretty hangable décor.

Supplies Needed:

  • Printer
  • Mini canvases
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Adhesive
  • Small eyelet screws (2 per canvas)
  • Coordinating ribbon
  • Craft knife
  • Cardstock or photo paper
  • Mod Podge (optional)
  • Watercolor Whimsy Motivational Word Art Mini
  • Watercolor Whimsy Collection Biggie

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Paint canvases.

Start by painting all the canvases with acrylic paint. Paint each a solid color or distress the canvas, then set aside to dry.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Paint canvases.

You can either paint the sides of your canvases or apply coordinating papers from the Watercolor Whimsy Collection Biggie. Resize a few papers down and print them on regular printer paper. (I printed a different paper for each canvas.)

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Trim excess paper.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Crease paper.

Apply adhesive to one side of the canvas. With the paper face down, press the canvas onto the paper. Use a craft knife to cut away the excess. Do this for each side of the canvas. Add Mod Podge if you want to seal the sides.

Twist in small screw eyes near the back edge of each canvas. You can find screw eyes in many craft stores near the wood items. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to screw them in if necessary.

Thread a ribbon or wire through the screw eyes to make a hanger.

Choose your word art and print it on cardstock or photo paper. Trim the excess paper and attach it to your canvas with adhesive.

Now you're ready to hang your handiwork!
