Note from Ro: As I was reading the Scrap Girls blog recently, I found this fun post by Kerry Veale, made in 2008. I love it. Kerry, I'm going to go around practicing this before Christmas morning so that no matter what I get (even if it's another frying pan) I can enthusiastically say, "It's just what I always wanted!"

It's Just What I Always Wanted!

The Christmas my daughter was three, when she opened a gift, her jaw would drop and she would exclaim, "It's just what I always wanted!" Beaming, she would run, curls bouncing, to throw her chubby little arms around the gift giver for a sweet hug.

Now, more than a decade later, one of our family's traditions is for each of us, when we open a gift, to exclaim in a high squeaky little voice, "It's just what I always wanted!" Of course, our little three-year-old really had not always wanted the gifts in advance or even requested them. She was simply overflowing with the pure and simple gratitude of a loving child.

With anxious news reports and a sinking world economy around us this year, it is a good time to pause and look back into the memory of those shining three-year-old's eyes and return to gratitude.

I'm reminded of one of my favorite quotes by George Herbert. "O Thou who has given us so much, mercifully grant us one thing more - a grateful heart."

May your heart be blessed richly this Christmas and may you find at least one shining moment when you can exclaim in a high squeaky little voice, "It's just what I always wanted!"

To celebrate this season, I've created a digital scrapbooking layout in gratitude for my husband and children.

ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes

I think one of the most overlooked products in the ScrapSimple product line is the Layer Your Own Brushes. I know that I have a lot of them but, for a while, I never realized how easy and versatile they were to use on my layouts!

If you're in need of adding a very specific and personal touch to your layout, but aren't sure what to use, be sure to check out all of the different ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes that are out there. You're sure to find something that meets your needs.

Personally, I love the ones that help me document and date my layouts. One of my favorites is Melissa Renfro's ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Stamped Specifics. This little set of labels includes several ways to date, describe and give other important information about your layout.

All of the ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes products come with the ABR brush file (for Photoshop) and the PNG files, so you can use whichever format you are most comfortable working with.

For this example, I start with the PNG file of one of the backgrounds and clip my paper to it. I also use the Brush Tool and one of the brushes from the ABR file to apply a border.

I then add the other pieces to the label that I wish to include. It's so much fun to mix and match and see how many unique combinations you can come up with! Here's a sampling of the various brushes I had to choose from.

After adding another fun border and other elements, here's what my finished label looks like.
