To make another nutcracker embellishment, I duplicated the one in the collection. I erased the tip of the hat and then I used the Color Replacement Tool to change parts of the coat, the hat and the pants to a different color.

I needed to adjust the color of Melissa Renfro's Lifted Photos: Weathered and Worn Embellishment Biggie to match the background paper. In the Photoshop Elements menu, I went to Enhance> Adjust Color> Adjust Hue/Saturation. Then I moved the Saturation slider to -5 and the Lightness slider to -5.

For this layout, I wanted my title to be festive and shiny, much like the ornaments in my layout. However, I didn't want it too busy, since there is a lot going on in the picture on my layout. So, to do that, I found an alpha that I wanted to use from Batik Collection Biggie. I chose this alpha for its clean, simple lines. Then, I selected a green paper from Watercolor Christmas Collection, and using a clipping mask (Ctrl+G), I clipped the paper to the alpha. This changed the color of the alpha to that of the paper. To make the title shiny, I duplicated the title layer and added the glass style to the top layer only. Voila! I have a festive, shiny title to compliment the theme for my layout.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I used a word art from Paula Wright's A Merry Season Collection Biggie on this layout. Her word art read "Christmas Memories" however; I wanted it to read "Christmas Tradition." To change the word from "Memories" to "Tradition", I used my Clone Stamp Tool and making sure the default brush was selected, I picked a spot on the background of the word art that I wanted to clone over the word "Memories." I stamped over the word, re-selecting cloning spots on the background as needed. Once the word was covered up, I selected a font that I liked and typed the word "Traditions." I placed the word on the word art and merged the two together.

Journaling: We started a new Christmas Tradition this year. I gathered 24 picture books relating to Christmas or the Winter Season and wrapped them each individually. The wrapped books were put in a basket and placed under the tree. Each night before bed the kids were able to unwrap one book for their bedtime story. Once the last book was unwrapped, we knew Christmas Eve had arrived.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To add depth and interest to the frame, I used my Polygonal Lasso Tool to carefully draw around the design on one of the corners. Because the corner was in three sections, I set the tool to "Add to Selection" and then, because I wanted a clean edge, I set the "Feather" to 0. To keep the edges from being too sharp, I checked "Anti-alias." Once I had the first corner selected and surrounded with marching ants, I clicked Ctrl+J four times, which duplicated the selection and created four separate layers of the corner design. I chose each layer individually and rotated and moved them to the other three corners of the frame, carefully placing them on top of the original design. Then I selected all four corners by highlighting their thumbnail images in the Layers Palette and merged them together by clicking Ctrl+E. Next, I applied the Rusty Rose style from ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Aged Metals Biggie and instantly the frame corners became a feature of their own!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To add magical sparkle to my main photo, I used Brandy Murry's ScrapSimple Tools ā Styles: Holiday In Lights. I duplicated my photo and applied the style to my new layer. When I first applied the style, there were sparkles in crazy places ā like right in the middle of a nose or forehead. To fix that problem, I simply resized the style. This is done by going to Layer> Layer Style> Scale Effects where you can easily change the scale of your style to work with your photo.

Journaling: Mr. Peeps comes to our house every year on Thanksgiving night. Who is Mr. Peeps? He is an elf who sits in various spots in our house -- magically moving every night (unless he particularly loves a certain location) to different spots around the house. He watches the kids, and jots down notes in his special notebook that he shares with Santa Claus. He comes to our house because we read a special, magical poem on Thanksgiving night. He is always there the following morning, and will stay with us until Santa picks him up on Christmas Eve. We are always so sad to see our elf friend leave us. One thing that is particularly special about Mr. Peeps is that we absolutely can NOT touch him. He will loose his magic, and that would be very bad. We just love having him in our home, and we try very hard to be extra good all Christmas Season.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To 'thread' Jacelen Deinema's Watercolor Nature Collection ferns and leaves under and over the vertical bamboo strips on her bamboo paper of the same collection, I placed the ferns and leaves where I wanted them to go over the first bamboo paper layer. I then duplicated the Bamboo paper and placed it on the top layer over all the ferns and leaf layers. I gave this top layer a layer mask and then, using my paintbrush and making sure my foreground color was black, I 'erased' all of the paper except for the two vertical bamboo strips. You can do this a different way by using a clipping mask over just the bamboo strips and then clipping the paper to the mask, but I prefer a layer mask as it gives me more control when there are edges that are not straight. This leaves me with the two vertical bamboo strips completely over all the leaves and ferns. I then decided which ferns and leaves I wanted over the bamboo strips and moved those layers above the second bamboo paper layer, leaving me with leaves and ferns both under and over the bamboo strips. I gave a bit of zing to the two green leaves on top of the bamboo strips by changing their Blending Mode to "Linear Light" at 100%.
