So Very Stylish

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 with Windows Vista.

What are styles and how do they work? To help you understand the magic of styles, we are going to create a layout where every element of the layout uses a style. You'll see how easy and fun styles are and how they give you more freedom to choose the colors you want, both in your photo and on your layout. (If you have not tried using digital scrapbooking styles yet, make sure to read the instructions included with your purchase and follow the steps to install the styles.)

First, make sure you have loaded these three sets of styles:

ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Intaglio Biggie 7601
ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Subtle Photos 7601
ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Jewel Tone Shimmers 7601 Biggie

To view the styles, go to Window> Styles. Now, your Styles Palette will be visible. Notice how each set of nine styles is displayed on the Styles Palette. (The specific commands to view the styles are given in the instructions that came with your purchase.)

Now, the fun and magic begins! Place all of the elements onto the layout, including the photo. Notice how the photo looks a bit too bright against the gold brocade background paper. (We're going to fix that later on, using a style, of course!)

Select the Brush Set: Doilies layer and click on the platinum style from the ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Jewel Tone Shimmers 7601 Biggie. You should now have a beautiful platinum doily with a metallic sheen to it! Can you believe how easy and fun this is?

Apply styles to every layer on your layout. I hope you'll have as much fun as me!

Remember how we noticed that the colors in the photo were too bold for our gold-toned layout? We're going to give the photo a sepia tone and then erase to colorize portions of it.

Duplicate the photo layer and apply the eighth style from the ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Subtle Photos 7601 to the duplicate photo layer. (The photo layer above the original layer.) With the top photo layer selected, use the Eraser Tool at a low Opacity and gently erase the hats and faces in the photo. (On the photo that you're using on your layout, erase the areas that you would like to see colorized.) If you know how to use a layer mask, add a mask and erase on the mask. If not, just erase on the top photo layer. (You are keeping the original photo as the layer below, so you may copy it and try this technique again if you don't like your initial results.) Make sure to leave the original photo intact because you need it there to show through the erased areas in the layer above.

Let's try another style on this photo. Again, make sure the top photo layer is selected and then click on the seventh style from the ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Subtle Photos 7601. We now have a colorized black and white photo!

Here's the photo using the ninth style from ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Subtle Photos 7601. Look at the original photo and notice how much better it looks on this layout with the style applied to it.

I hope you've had as much fun playing with styles as I have had explaining them. Using styles will bring your digital scrapbooking layouts up to a whole new level of creativity!
