QUESTION: Does anyone know how to install styles and actions in PSE 7 with Windows 7? Nothing I have tried has worked and I have been on hold forever waiting for a live person at Adobe!

ANSWER 1: I think it's a hidden folder. Did you make sure and show your hidden folders?
C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\8.0\Photo Creations\layer styles

ANSWER 2: I purchased a book on Windows 7, but it doesn't cover hidden files. I did a search, but didn't come up with anything. Does anyone have any other ideas?

ANSWER 3: This is how you get your computer to show the hidden files in Windows 7.
Click Start. Go to Control Panel. In the top right search box, search for "Folder Options." Click on "Show Hidden Files and Folders." In Advanced Settings, about seven lines down, under Hidden Files and Folders, click on "Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives." This should allow you to find: C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\8.0\Photo Creations\layer styles

RESPONSE 1: Thanks for your help. I checked the show hidden folders, but Photo Creations still doesn't show. I am using PSE 7, but I would think it should still show up. I'm going to try and do a search for Photo Creations and see if I can find it.

RESPONSE 2: I found it! The path is: Program Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\7\locale\en-us

ANSWER 4: I just bought and installed "Add-O-Matic." I figure it will pay for itself with the time I will save installing styles, patterns, etc. Don't forget to create a file for your styles, brushes, etc., outside of PSE and back them up. If you lose the program (these will go with it) or if you have to re-install for a multitude of reasons, you'll need a copy of these. I created folders in My Documents labeled PSE Brushes, PSE Styles, etc., and keep a copy of every file in there. It is better to be safe than sorry. (I lost an EHD earlier this summer. What a disaster. Estimated $500-1800 to recover and I can't afford that. Most files, but not all, were duplicated elsewhere.)

QUESTION: Before I put PSE 8 on my computer, do I need to copy all of my brushes, actions, etc., to a folder and then bring them into 8? Will 8 overwrite my current files? Will all of the presets disappear or will they now be in 8? In the directions that came with all this, it said to copy and keep the originals in a separate folder. I didn't remember that when I was just getting started in June, so I know that I don't have a bunch anywhere else except in PSE.

ANSWER 1: Installing PSE 8 won't touch PSE 4. It will still be a viable program until you remove it from your computer. Yes, you will have to re-install all of the styles, brushes and actions into the new program.

ANSWER 2: I keep a separate folder under My Documents with a copy of all my actions and styles in it. From there, I can back them up and copy them to their destinations. If you were to lose your copy of PSE or have it corrupted (I have bad lightning doing damage at my house) you would lose the actions and styles that were loaded. So, just for ease of mind, copy them over to a folder for safe-keeping.

ANSWER 3: I am so glad you asked this question. I may be upgrading soon, too.

ANSWER 4: I copied all of the folders from PSE 7 that I had changed, i.e., styles, shapes and actions (my brushes are in a separate folder anyway) and put them into a new folder on my desktop. I installed PSE 8 and removed the same folders and put them into a different folder on my desktop. I then copied the old PSE 7 folders into those locations in PSE 8 and held my breath. It worked! It sounds like you might need to copy your presets folder also. However, I do keep copies of all my actions, styles and shapes in separate folders anyway because you never know. Hope this helps!

QUESTION: Hello all, I have a question for you. I have a few actions and I was wondering how to get the thumbnail pictures that come with them to show up in PSE 6. Is this something that is possible or not? Any help is greatly appreciated.

ANSWER 1: They don't show up in mine and if there is a way to do it, I don't know what it is. I was a lot of help, wasn't I? I'll be watching to see if you get an answer from someone else.

ANSWER 2: You have to create an .xml file for each one. You'll still have to view them in show all mode, but the thumbnails will show up.
Library/ApplicationSupport/Adobe/PhotoshopElements/6.0/locale/En_Us/PhotoCreationsMetadata/photoeffects
That's the path to the .xml files for actions. I chose one that existed, substituted the name of the action in the appropriate place and saved the .xml file with the new action name. Then, I forced elements to rebuild the thumbs database. I use a MAC. If you use Windows, the path will be slightly different. Hope this helps.

RESPONSE: Thanks, I finally got it! I'm so happy now. I can see them and not have to guess! After I did it your way, I did find that if I just replaced the Add-o-Matic thumbnail with the ones that come with the actions, it works too. I just have to delete the thumbnail and media caches and rerun PSE. Both ways worked like a charm!
