Why? Why? Why?

Why?

  • Why do we want dark hair when we have blond hair and blond hair when we have dark hair?

  • Why is it that the cable breaks right at the critical moment in the movie?

  • Why are DVD players so hard to run? Why do you have to have three remote controls to work everything when you want to watch a movie? Why don't universal remote controls work? If they aren't universal, why do they call them that?

  • Why do zippers break when we are in public places? Would it be too much to ask them to refrain themselves until we get home?

  • Why does it take a master's degree for an adult to operate a cell phone correctly?

  • Why do our eyes make it so difficult to read when we are finally at the age that we have a little time to enjoy books?

  • Why is the ice cream scoop always in the dishwasher when we want to use it?

  • Why are there less chocolate raisins in the box than there used to be? I've noticed.

  • Why is it harder to cross our legs when we are 49 years-old than when we were teenagers?

  • Why do all of the pens disappear when it comes time to write down a phone message?

  • Why does the house phone ring after we leave the front door?

  • Why does the printer run out of ink when there is only one page left out of a big print job?

  • Why does the sprinkler break when you are on vacation?

  • Why does the dog bark just at the very moment that you are falling asleep?

  • Why does your fingernail break when you are in the driver's seat?

  • Why is there always more leftover mashed potatoes than gravy?

  • Why do we remember that is it our friend's birthday the day after the birthday is over?

  • Why does mascara get clumpy just when we have an important event to get ready for?

  • Why do we always run out of shampoo before we run out of the matching conditioner? Do you think that this is some kind of mass merchandising conspiracy to make us keep using the same brand because they know we will keep trying to get it to come out right?

  • Why do our best spoons fall down in the disposal?

  • Why does an aspirin cost $10 when you get it at the hospital? Why doesn't the doctor let you bring in your own bottle of aspirin so that you can use that?

  • Why does the bag break when you are two feet from the garbage bin?

  • Why does a puff of wind hit your skirt right when you are climbing out of a car?

  • Why does spaghetti sauce drip on white shirts but not on red shirts?

  • Why does it rain when you finally get around to taking your kids to the water park?

  • Why does your shoelace break when you are camping?

  • Why is it easier to doze off when you are in church than when you sitting in your living room?

  • Why do pictures fall off of the wall just when important company walks into your living room?

  • Why can you find your calculator when you don't need it, but it isn't in the drawer when it is time to figure out your bills? Is it afraid?

  • Why does our face break out when we have scheduled a family portrait?

  • Why does a rock land on our windshield immediately after getting the chips repaired?

  • Why can't we just relax and enjoy ourselves instead of asking so many questions about everything?

You know what? I think I'm going to try and conquer those remote controls once and for all.

Wish me luck!

See ya tomorrow,

Ro

BEST OF THE MESSAGE BOARD

QUESTION: Does anyone know how to install styles and actions in PSE 7 with Windows 7? Nothing I have tried has worked and I have been on hold forever waiting for a live person at Adobe!

div

ANSWER 1: I think it's a hidden folder. Did you make sure and show your hidden folders?

C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\8.0\Photo Creations\layer styles

div

ANSWER 2: I purchased a book on Windows 7, but it doesn't cover hidden files. I did a search, but didn't come up with anything. Does anyone have any other ideas?

div

ANSWER 3: This is how you get your computer to show the hidden files in Windows 7.

Click Start. Go to Control Panel. In the top right search box, search for "Folder Options." Click on "Show Hidden Files and Folders." In Advanced Settings, about seven lines down, under Hidden Files and Folders, click on "Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives." This should allow you to find: C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\8.0\Photo Creations\layer styles

div

RESPONSE 1: Thanks for your help. I checked the show hidden folders, but Photo Creations still doesn't show. I am using PSE 7, but I would think it should still show up. I'm going to try and do a search for Photo Creations and see if I can find it.

div

RESPONSE 2: I found it! The path is: Program Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\7\locale\en-us

div

ANSWER 4: I just bought and installed "Add-O-Matic." I figure it will pay for itself with the time I will save installing styles, patterns, etc. Don't forget to create a file for your styles, brushes, etc., outside of PSE and back them up. If you lose the program (these will go with it) or if you have to re-install for a multitude of reasons, you'll need a copy of these. I created folders in My Documents labeled PSE Brushes, PSE Styles, etc., and keep a copy of every file in there. It is better to be safe than sorry. (I lost an EHD earlier this summer. What a disaster. Estimated $500-1800 to recover and I can't afford that. Most files, but not all, were duplicated elsewhere.)

div

QUESTION: Before I put PSE 8 on my computer, do I need to copy all of my brushes, actions, etc., to a folder and then bring them into 8? Will 8 overwrite my current files? Will all of the presets disappear or will they now be in 8? In the directions that came with all this, it said to copy and keep the originals in a separate folder. I didn't remember that when I was just getting started in June, so I know that I don't have a bunch anywhere else except in PSE.

div

ANSWER 1: Installing PSE 8 won't touch PSE 4. It will still be a viable program until you remove it from your computer. Yes, you will have to re-install all of the styles, brushes and actions into the new program.

div

ANSWER 2: I keep a separate folder under My Documents with a copy of all my actions and styles in it. From there, I can back them up and copy them to their destinations. If you were to lose your copy of PSE or have it corrupted (I have bad lightning doing damage at my house) you would lose the actions and styles that were loaded. So, just for ease of mind, copy them over to a folder for safe-keeping.

div

ANSWER 3: I am so glad you asked this question. I may be upgrading soon, too.

div

ANSWER 4: I copied all of the folders from PSE 7 that I had changed, i.e., styles, shapes and actions (my brushes are in a separate folder anyway) and put them into a new folder on my desktop. I installed PSE 8 and removed the same folders and put them into a different folder on my desktop. I then copied the old PSE 7 folders into those locations in PSE 8 and held my breath. It worked! It sounds like you might need to copy your presets folder also. However, I do keep copies of all my actions, styles and shapes in separate folders anyway because you never know. Hope this helps!

div

QUESTION: Hello all, I have a question for you. I have a few actions and I was wondering how to get the thumbnail pictures that come with them to show up in PSE 6. Is this something that is possible or not? Any help is greatly appreciated.

div

ANSWER 1: They don't show up in mine and if there is a way to do it, I don't know what it is. I was a lot of help, wasn't I? I'll be watching to see if you get an answer from someone else.

div

ANSWER 2: You have to create an .xml file for each one. You'll still have to view them in show all mode, but the thumbnails will show up.

Library/ApplicationSupport/Adobe/PhotoshopElements/6.0/locale/En_Us/PhotoCreationsMetadata/photoeffects

That's the path to the .xml files for actions. I chose one that existed, substituted the name of the action in the appropriate place and saved the .xml file with the new action name. Then, I forced elements to rebuild the thumbs database. I use a MAC. If you use Windows, the path will be slightly different. Hope this helps.

div

RESPONSE: Thanks, I finally got it! I'm so happy now. I can see them and not have to guess! After I did it your way, I did find that if I just replaced the Add-o-Matic thumbnail with the ones that come with the actions, it works too. I just have to delete the thumbnail and media caches and rerun PSE. Both ways worked like a charm!
