Digital scrapbook layout by Jennifer Labre

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

This layout was inspired by Amy Jaz's "Imagine" layout. I love the look she got by popping out a color portion of the photo against a black and white photo. This technique is really easy to do. Simply start with both a color version and black and white version of the same photo, same size. Have the color version on the layer above the black and white version. Add the frame in the spot that you would like to highlight. With your Magic Wand Tool, select the inside of the frame. Go to Select> Modify> Expand and change it to 25 pixels. This will ensure that your selection will fall under the frame, without any edges peeking through. With the selection still highlighted, go to the color photo layer and click Ctrl+C to copy that portion of the photo. Ctrl+V to paste the selection onto a new layer. You can now delete the color version of your photo. You should now end up with a black and white photo in the background and a framed color version that "pops" off the page.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I tried several different papers for the base of my layout. I knew I wanted a wood texture, but I couldn't seem to find one that was "just right." Some were too light, some were too brown, some were too red... you get the idea. So I took the Wood paper from Angela Blanchard's Farmer's Bounty Collection and placed it as the background, and because I wanted a red tint to it, I chose to go to Enhance> Adjust Color> Color Variations and add just a hint more red to the paper.

Wine Bottle Label by Jo Corne

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Using TheresaK's "My Little Boy" layout as my inspiration, I decided to create a wine bottle label with our family photo so that when we give a bottle of wine as a gift, the recipient will know exactly who gave it to them, plus it's lots of fun to make your own fun labels. Using Syndee Nuckles' ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Slice it Up as my base for the label, I combined the two photos of my family into one and placed it into the photo area of the template. Then, using inspiration from my scraplift buddy (Thanks, Theresa!) I built my label up from there. I loved using Brandie Valenzuela's ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Puzzled - Heart as an element for the label, as it shows the gift comes from our heart. Once I was happy with the completed label, I printed it out on a sticky backed paper, carefully cut it out, peeled off the back and stuck it onto my bottle. I hope that every time I give a bottle of wine as a gift that people will love not only the wine but the label, too.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I loved this unfinished puzzle look in katiemo's "Puzzled" layout. She created it for a message board challenge to use a tutorial from Scrap Girls University. To find the tutorial, I went to the University, clicked on the topic "ScrapSimple Embellishment Digital Templates" and scrolled down to find the tutorial called "Achieving the Unfinished Puzzle Look" by Brandie Valenzuela. Using the tutorial, I was able to lift Katie's layout, using my own photo puzzle.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I chose Amanda Panda, a fellow Canuck, and lifted her "Moss Family Vacation" layout. Because my smaller photograph was scanned from an old print, and because the two photos are obviously taken many years apart, the colours in them didn't coordinate well. In fact they seemed to fight against each another. In order to make them work together, I applied the black and white action from Sarah Batdorf's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Vintage PSE 6502 Mini to the older photo.

I suppose hind-sight really is 20/20, but at least I have these two pictures to document the event; one from their very first trip in 1996, and one from this year. They really enjoy getting away, going fishing and spending time together.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

For this assignment, I scraplifted Debbie, B&K Mom, for her "Adore You" layout. I love the square frames of different sizes for her photos. The leaves and bird in the upper corner are such a nice touch, making the layout so bright, airy and fresh. I just love it. Thanks, Debbie, for the wonderful inspiration!

I love the leaves from Life's Canvas Collection Biggie, but they are a little too bright for my version of this layout. For my layout, I chose more earthy colors with subdued hues to better match my vintage photographs. (Vintage photos? Of me? Ackk!!!) Since I still wanted to use these leaves, I needed to adjust the color a bit. To do that, I highlighted my leaf layer in the Layers Palette. Then I went to Enhance> Adjust Colors> Color Variations. From there, I just added and subtracted color until I found the color balance on the leaves that was pleasing with my layout.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I chose to scraplift sweetaudrey's September Desktop layout.

Trish Yochum's "Big Brother" and "Little Brother" word art from her Oh Brother Collection Mini is all on one line. I wanted my word art to be stacked on top of each other so they would fit inside the circles better. To do this, I first selected my "Big Brother" word art. I then selected my Rectangular Marquee Tool and made a box around the word "Big." Next I used my Move Tool to position the word "Big" above the word "Brother." Once that was done, I pressed Ctrl+D on my keyboard to remove the marching ants around my word. I repeated these steps with the word "Little" on the "Little Brother" word art.

A DESIGNER'S LIFE

Thao Cosgrove
Thao Cosgrove

Snapshots of My Creative Life

  • I learned to draw at the age of three by imitating my mother's drawings.

  • I'm not the only artistic person in my family. My younger brother, Tam, is a prolific designer and artist who has aspirations to make feature-length animations with Pixar.

  • When I was in the first grade, I would steal pieces of chalk from my classroom and draw on my sister's crib.

  • In grade school, I won all sorts of awards for art, but I mainly did it for the attention. I was an extremely shy child, but found a way to shine through my art.

  • Construction paper and stationery were my favorite toys as a child.

  • I didn't consider a career in the arts until I was a junior in high school. Even then, I still pursued scholarships in environmental engineering and medical technology.

  • From the ages of 13 to 19, I created handmade greetings cards for my parents for every birthday, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Christmas.

  • I was 19 years-old when I had my first solo art show. When the gallery owner asked me to help her name her brand new gallery by picking a letter of the alphabet, I said, "J." She immediately replied, "It can't be after someone you have a crush on." So, I changed my answer to "T."

  • I was admitted into the University of Florida's architecture program, transferred to the graphic design program, but eventually graduated with a BFA in drawing. I never attended a Gators football game.

  • My first painting homework in college measured 44x30 inches. I was surprised when my classmates brought in a more accurate interpretation of "homework" assignment; a small painting measuring no more than 16x20 inches. My piece was overly ambitious for sure, but it still proudly hangs in my bedroom today.

  • My favorite artists include Marc Chagall, Adolphe Bouguereau, John Singer Sargent, Edgar Degas, Michelangelo and Beatrix Potter.

  • I dislike going to art galleries.

  • My favorite art media are colored pencils, watercolors, and chemical transfers.

  • When I was hired to design my first web site, I had no web design experience or knowledge. Needless to say, I learned quickly.

  • It was after watching a Food Network documentary on Warren Brown, creator of the "Cake Love" bakery, that I asked myself the question: "What do I love?" The answer was "paper." Three days later, I discovered digital scrapbooking at Scrap Girls.

  • My heart's desire is to work with children and art.

  • Although I am technically an artist, I rarely use that term to describe myself. What I do with my gifts, talents and career is more important than what any of those things actually are.

  • I recently painted a cloud mural in the nursery of my church, which made me excited about painting and drawing again.

  • My favorite colors are turquoise blue, pomegranate red and bamboo green.

  • There's so much more to me than art.

Favorite Product I've designed:
Daily Bread Collection Mini

Daily Bread Collection Mini

I wanted to create a faith-based kit that was earthy yet ethereal, simple yet rich, practical but sophisticated. The papers were fun and inspiring to work on. I kept them versatile so that they can be used for a variety of layout themes. The kit also includes flowers, a Bible, and some of my favorite Scripture verses as word art. I know there are several Christian scrapbookers who enjoy scrapbooking about their faith, so I'm proud to offer a kit with this theme.

To see the shadows and texture from the cabinet case, play with the Blending Modes. I use "Multiply" here. Resize the paper to fit inside the case.

Add a picture and frame. I brushed some color onto the frame to pick up some of the colors in the background paper.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Add photo and frame.

Place a bottle from the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Specimen Jars slightly behind the frame. Colorize the bottle with Hue/Saturation. I gave the bottle a slightly sepia tone to make the cork look realistic. Play a bit with the Blending Modes and Opacity on the bottle.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Add embellishment template.

I add my own paper to the label of the jar using another vector mask and use "Hard Light" for the Blending Mode. Add some embellishments, journaling or word art to your label. Here, I use a brush from the Brush Set: Write it Down. I also add some color to the word art to pick up the pretty background paper colors.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Fill bottom template with color.

Add alphas or embellishments to the top and bottom shelves and you're done! You can even add a touch of color to the drawer handles.

If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop or Photoshop Elements before, or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT SCRAP GIRLS?

CROPS AND CHATS

NSBR Chat
Monday, November 2nd - 7:00PM MT

What is NSBR? It's a non-scrapbooking related chat! We talk about everything, including some scrapbooking and usually chocolate. It's a great chance to meet new friends, catch up on what everyone is up to, and just relax! If you have a problem, we'll lend an ear or a shoulder to cry on. Have some great news to share? We'd love to celebrate with you. So join Carla (CRS) on November 2nd at 7pm MT!

Life Moments Chat
Tuesday, November 3rd - 4:00PM MT

These crops are about building a scrapbook all about you, one layout at a time. This month we are focusing on Gratitude. Make a list or write down your stories, find some pictures and join Angela (angelaNussbaum) and April Showers for the Life Moments Chat and Crop on Tuesday, November 3rd at 4pm MT.

Creative Card Chat
Tuesday, November 3rd - 6:00PM MT

Do you use your digi-supplies to make cards? Do you want to? Instead of going to the store every time you need a card, you can save money and have fun making cards with your stash! Make a note of any cards you might need for the upcoming month, and join Michelle (Shelbi) and April Showers for the monthly Card Chat on Tuesday at 6pm MT. Can't wait to see you there!

East Coast High Noon Crop
Wednesday, November 4th - 10:00AM MT

Join your guest host April Showers for the East Coast High Noon Crop every Wednesday at 10am MT. These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes, simply giving participants a one hour goal, and a fun, new challenge each week! On November 4th, we'll do a white space challenge! Create a layout using white space. This 'negative' or blank space guides the eye to the important areas of your page. Remember, it certainly doesn't have to be the color white! You'll have one hour to create a layout and upload to the special High Noon Crop Gallery. You'd be amazed what you can get done in just one hour!

What's New Chat
Friday, November 6th - 9:00AM MT

Join Michelle (Shelbi) and Becca at 9am Mountain Time on Friday mornings to chat about all the cool new things in the boutique. You never know who else is going to show up! What are you getting? What did you kaboodle? And most importantly show us the layouts or other projects you made with your new goodies! There's a thread every Thursday and now there's a chat too!

Back-Up Party and Chat
Friday, November 6th - 8:00PM MT

Need a little extra motivation to back-up your layouts and stash? Join April Showers in the chat room Friday November 6th for a Back-up Party and Chat. We'll also go over several different ways to safeguard your files. You won't want to miss this one!

NOVEMBER EVENTS

November Message Board Game: The Alphabet Hunt

We're taking your ABC game skills to a whole new level this month... and tacking on some prizes as well! This month's message board game is "The Alphabet Hunt." Every few days, we'll give you a new theme and a searching task and then set you loose to start building our list in alphabetic order! Find the specifics about game play in the November Message Board Game thread in the Monthly Message Board Game folder on the Scrap Girls forum.

For each item you correctly add to our alphabetic list in the game thread on the message board, your name will be entered into a drawing which will be held at the end of the month. Five winners will be drawn and each will win a $5 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls boutique! Additionally, the person with the most correct contributions to the game will automatically win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap GIrls boutique! Participation is what counts big this month, so join us on the message board for the detailed rules, search specifics and LOTS of fun!
