"A Mother's Prayer" by Kim Meeder

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make the "Time Together" word art more vivid and appear to be painted on the spiral sketchbook, I made a duplicate of the word art and placed it above my original in the Layers Palette. Next, I highlighted the duplicate copy layer, chose "Vivid Light" from the Blending Modes drop down menu, and lowered the layer's Opacity setting to 42%. Then, I merged the two layers together. Finally, working on the merged layer, I used the Eraser Tool with some edging brushes to create an uneven, painted effect.

"Jump Out Card" by Jo Corne

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
First I created my basic card background with Mandy Steward's Home Life Collection Biggie and Fully Alive Collection Biggie. I then created the boy and girl figures with Mandy Steward's ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Ordinary Peoples Girl Basic and ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Ordinary Peoples Boy Basic. Using my Magic Wand, I highlighted the inside of each element of the figures and, using Cmd+J on a Mac (Ctrl+J on PC) I sent the inside onto its own layer. Now that I had this 'inside' layer, I could give it the color or pattern I wanted. Using photos of my kids, I gave the figures their heads as a finishing touch. Once I was happy with the final results, I printed each card out as-is. I then printed out just the two figures and cut them out. To give the card the 3D look I wanted, I stuck the two figures over themselves but with pop up dots that you can get from any scrapbooking store. These make the image stand out from its background and give it a more 3D look.

"The Face of Determination" by Janine Buckles

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
In my original photo, my son's shirt was blue and the wall behind him was white. I really liked the green paper in the Halloween Horror Paper Super Mini but when I placed my photo on it, something wasn't quite right... so, I used my Lasso Tool to carefully extract the blue shirt and then clicked Layer> New> Layer via copy (Ctrl+J), which created a new layer with just the shirt on it. Next, I chose the shirt layer by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette and clicked Enhance> Adjust Color> Adjust Hue/Saturation (Ctrl+U). Then I moved the sliders until I had the right shades of green. I repeated the process with the white wall in the background. And that's the cool thing about digital scrapbooking; if you don't like something, change it!

My color scheme was mainly turquoise and brown to coordinate with the sky and woodsy feel of my photo, but I also added white as an accent.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted to create some Halloween decor! First, I created each layout with a similar design, showcasing each character inside Lori Cook's Brush Set: Edging Misted Edges and Brush Set: Circles 3. Then I printed the layouts on photo paper, trimmed, and framed them.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted to use Trish Yochum's circle cut border from her Assemble Your Own Zoom Pages: Pin It Up, but the color was too dark for my layout. So I placed a red paper from her Pin It Up Collection Biggie and clipped (Ctrl+G in Photoshop Elements 6, Ctrl+Alt+G in Photoshop CS3) it onto the said border.

Who says you have to use a background as is? Make it your own with brushes and embellishments. Here, I use Lori Cook's Brush Set: Grunged Geometrics and Brush Set: Decorative Swirls to add interest to the background. After adding the brushes to their own layers, change the Blending Modes to help them blend into the background better. I also add extra embellishments to help different features of the premade background pop off the page. Now, I have a unique background, created just for my layout!

Halloween Countdown Calendar by Joann Brown
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
When I found this calendar at a local store, complete with drawers to hold all sorts of goodies, I couldn't resist it! I always have an Advent calendar (or two) to countdown Christmas, but it was so much fun creating a calendar to countdown the days to Halloween.
I wanted each drawer to be different, but coordinating, so I used a single main collection for the calendar (although I used pieces for other collections, the majority of this calendar is from Caroline Kaiser's Halloween Night Collection Mini.) All of the papers work together, so it creates a cohesive look throughout, even though there is a lot of stuff going on. I also used the same font for each number so the numbers would all flow, but I applied different styles and used different techniques to give each individual box front a different look. Finally, another technique I used to create a consistent feel throughout is by applying different styles from the same style collection (in this case, it was ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Aged Folds 5001) to each of the rectangles on each of the drawers. I didn't want each rectangle to be identical, but I wanted them all to work together.
This was a really fun project, and my kids can't wait to open up the drawers as we count down to Halloween – there is chocolate inside, after all.
