Hybrid Birthday Card by Joann Brown

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
When doing a hybrid card – or a card that combines digital and traditional scrapbooking elements – dimension is going to be key in making a great card. Here, I created dimension by popping up the circles – first the large circle that says "happy birthday," and then the smaller circles in between the "H" and the "B" at the bottom right. I created these embellishments digitally, then copied them and printed them separately. After printing out the card and the embellishments, I cut the circles out and adhered them to the card using pop dots. As a final dimensional touch, I added twine.

I wanted to use Kim Meeder's ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Bursting for the front of the card. I created the card in the 8.5 x 11 inch format and then resized it to 4.25 x 5.5 inches for printing.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make the burlap circles look more realistic, I used Dynamic Brush Set: Fibers 4901 - Biggie with ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Edge It PSE 5001. I adjusted the brush size to about 50 pixels and the "exact" action. Then I clipped the burlap paper on top. This gave the appearance of frayed edges on the circles.
Hybrid Tip: To add some depth and dimension to my card, I used a straight pin to apply glue to some of the elements of my card and sprinkled them with clear glitter. This allowed the color beneath to show through. I also used adhesive foam dots to adhere word art both outside and inside the card.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
For this hybrid card assignment, I wanted the text to have a bit of 3D effect on it to make it really pop. To do this, I first typed my text using the font and color to match my layout. Then I simplified the text layer. Then, I duplicated the layer. On the duplicate layer, I applied one of the ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Embed 1801 to it. It now looks embossed and gives it a little more texture and character than if I had just typed it onto the page.
A technique that I used to make this layout a hybrid card was to cut out the title "COME." After I cut the letters out of a copy of the layout, I used the little foam squares that can be bought at any craft store to elevate the title above the rest of the layout. I placed them directly on top of the letters on the bottom paper layer. For one letter "E" I actually doubled the foam squares so that letter stands slightly above all the others. I chose that letter because it is the first letter of my daughter's name.

"I Gotta Lotta Soft Spots For You" by Michelle Torres

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted to add some felt to each of the spots on the Digital Stickers: Dog Days. The first thing I did was create the card placing each piece where I wanted it to go. I then hid the elements I wanted to print off separately by clicking on the eyeball in the Layers Palette. In this case, I wanted to print separately the Digital Stickers: Dog Days and the Number 4 with the HotDogEmb_Bone attached to it. I first printed the card and then I printed the elements. After buying some black fuzzy felt at a local craft store, I cut it into small pieces. I then glued the felt to each of the spots. To make the stickers pop off the page, I used 3D foam square adhesives. You can use any kind of soft material such as felt, velour, even velvet.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
After I'd created the card digitally with the card template, I printed it on cardstock. Then I went back to the PSD file, hid the background layer and moved the "Thinking of You" label to the empty space. I printed it again and cut out the rectangles and the label. Using the printed card as a placement guide, I glued the rectangles to the card in the appropriate spaces. I strung the beads on the yarn and adhered the yarn to the card with tape on the back side (the yarn is threaded through a small slit on the left side.) I glued the label to the card on top of the yarn between the two beads. Finally, I folded up the card and glued it together which hid the yarn ends. I used the same technique for the envelope.

Instead of layering all of the PNG files from the ScrapSimple Card Templates: 5.5x4.25 Basic that I used, I arranged them all on an 8.5x11" document that I created in Photoshop. Once I put each of them onto the page, I printed them out onto cardstock, cut them out, and then used an acid free adhesive to glue the pieces on top of each other to give the card a three dimensional feel.
