In order to get the background paper the way I wanted it, I placed the Script Paper over the White Paper from Angela Blanchard's Heraldic Crest Collection Biggie. Then I changed the Opacity of the Script Paper to 50%. To add the border, I placed a paper from Valerie Randall's ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Jen - Edges and Textures above the background papers and colored it red.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To get a realistic high shadow for the twine bow, I used ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Deep Shadows 6501 PSE and PS Biggie on the bow layer. This gave me a shadow on a new layer below the bow. To get the shadow exactly where I wanted it to be, I skewed it very slightly and used the Smudge Tool to move the tails over just a bit.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I love the extra character and detail that Angela Blanchard put into her Cattails Paper from her Waters Edge Collection, but some of the blemishes were interfering with my text. To fix this problem, I made sure my background paper was selected in my Layers Palette and then used my Clone Tool to click on part of the paper with little spotting and brush over the spots that covered up my text to remove them.

Journaling: Uncle Matt took us on a walk by the creek behind their house. One of the best finds of the walk was these cattails. You two were excited about their softness and enjoyed blowing the cotton into the wind.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
In order to blend my main photo into the background, I first removed the bright blue sky that was above the buildings. To do this, I selected the photo layer by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette. Next I chose my Polygon Lasso Tool, with Feather set to 2px, and used it to draw around the sky and rooftops. (Doing this put those helpful little marching ants around the top section of my photo.) Then I pushed the Delete button and removed the sky. Next, with my photo layer still selected, I set the Blending Mode to "Hard Light." The details in my photo remained clear but picked up the awesome texture of the paper, from Angela Blanchard's Touches Of Mexico Collection, beneath it.

Journaling: I first saw this man two years ago on my first visit to Honduras. He was walking up the hill toward a town called "Valle de Angeles" (Valley of Angels.) This time I saw him in the town and asked if I could take his picture; "Uno foto por favor?" He smiled, said "Si" and I snapped a few shots. Then I gave my camera to a friend of mine and asked if he could take a picture of me on the donkey; "Foto en el caballo por favor?" Again, the man smiled and said, "Si." The next thing I know I am being led through the village, on a tour! In the end it only cost me 60 Lempiras, which is equal to about $3 and about 20 minutes of my time... but, for that small price I had an experience that was priceless!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To recolor Syndee Nuckles' ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Flowers Biggie, I first rasterized the flower layer turning the flower into pixels that can be recolored. I then gave the flower a color layer style of a fairly dull but heavily saturated yellow. I added a gradient layer style, changing the gradient style to radial and changing its Blending Mode to "Overlay" at 100%. I clicked on the gradient itself to edit the colors. On the first color triangle on the left, I kept the color at black. I clicked in the middle of the gradient and gave that triangle a goldy/orange color and the final triangle on the right was given a very pale yellow color. These two layer styles together gave me the sunflower look I wanted for the individual flowers so they mimicked the flowers in Angela Blanchard's Farmer's Bounty Collection sunflower arrangement.

Word art doesn't always have to be the main focal point of your layout. It can be used subtly too, as I have done here with the word art that names bodies of water. I decided to make the background paper a little more interesting, so I added the word art, rotated it, added an "Overlay" Blending Mode and reduced the Opacity to 43%.

I wanted to give the journaling a unique, antique look – like it had been written a long time ago and discolored. By selecting "Color Burn" for my Blending Mode and using a brown tone for my font color, when I type over the notebook, the font takes on a personality of its own.

Journaling: We bought 2 copies so Mom & Rachel could each have her own (and therefore there would be no arguing).
- When we arrived, we were sorted into Gryffindor house!
- We met some famous Harry Potter characters, including Mad Eye Moody & Tonks.
- The "Pensieve" was just one of many fun themed activities for us to do.
- It was a magical night for us – in more ways than one.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make the horseshoe appear as though one side was under the photo and the other above it, I put the horseshoe on the layer below the photo. Then, using my Lasso Tool, I made a selection around the portion of the horseshoe that I wanted to appear on top of the photo. Once my selection was made, and the marching ants were there, I right-clicked on my selection, and chose "Layer Via Copy." This creates a new layer with just the portion of the horseshoe. I moved that new layer to be above the photo layer, and now it appeared to be on top of the photo and blended in with the rest of the horseshoe even though it was on another layer.
