Angie Briggs
Angie Briggs

Last night, as we were watching the boys practice flag football, my husband and I had a conversation that went something like this:

"How much longer will it be before the boys can wear my shoes?"

To which I replied, "What size do you wear again?"

"I wear a nine."

All I could do was laugh. I let him know that when I went shoe shopping for school this year, Colby was wearing a 7-7.5 and Justin wore a 7.5-8. My husband just shook his head and kept watching practice.

You see, the boys have been cursed by my big feet. I always had large feet growing up and, as an adult, I wear a size 11 (10 on a good day). I remember spending the night at a friend's house once and she thought it was the coolest thing that I could wear her dad's shoes. The boys are on the path to have very large feet also. Not many kids I know in second grade are wearing anywhere between a size 7 and 8 in men's shoes.

Even though they have large feet and can't wear some of the "cool shoes" that other kids wear to school, one thing is for sure, my kids love their shoes and shoe shopping is their favorite part of back-to-school time. This year was no exception. We spent a couple of hours picking out shoes and trying them on until we found just the right ones. Even though my kids have been hit by the "curse of the large feet," they sure will be rockin' their shoes!

WAY COOL STUFF - DIGITAL SCRAPBOOKING PRODUCT REVIEW

Sketches

Digital scrapbooking sketches are layout plans in their most basic form. They include a grouping of blocks, circles and lines that represent where a photo, embellishment or journaling could be placed. A sketch usually follows sound design principles and is a great starting point for digital layouts. For beginners, sketches are a great way to learn design principles. For more experienced scrappers, sketches are a fun reminder of some advanced rules. A sketch can be followed precisely in its exact form or it can be rotated, flipped, inversed or adapted to suit your own creativity!

Let's start with a sketch from Marnie Adams' newest eBook: Scrapbooking 911 - 20 Sketches to Revitalize Your Digital Scrapbooking - Book 4. I am using sketch number 19 for my examples.

The first thing I do is drag it onto my layout.

Digital Scrapbooking Product Review: Open sketch.

There are several ways to use the sketch now that I have it on my layout. For the first example, I am going to use the sketch exactly as it is presented. The easiest way for me to follow the sketch is to simply leave the sketch on the top layer of my layout and lower the Opacity so that I can see my photos and elements below.

Digital Scrapbooking Product Review: Lower Opacity of sketch.

The blocks in the sketch represent where photos will be placed and the circles represent where embellishments will be placed. For this layout, I want to use some pictures of my family at the park. I want a happy, light-hearted layout, so I use bright primary colors. After I chose my photos and embellishments, I simply place them directly on top of the blocks and circles of the sketch. When I want to see how my layout looks, I click the eyeball icon to the left of the layer to make it invisible. When I am done with my layout, I can leave the sketch layer invisible or delete it.

To show you how versatile sketches can be, here is a totally different layout. This time, I rotate the sketch twice to achieve a new look. To do this, drag the sketch onto a new layout and go to Image> Rotate> Flip Layer Horizontal. I rotate it again by going to Image> Rotate> 90 Right. You can see that it's the same sketch, but it looks much different.

Digital Scrapbooking Product Review: Rotate sketch.

I want this layout to be more sentimental, so I choose papers and embellishments with a more subtle feeling to support my theme - earth tones with soft hues. This time, I treat the blocks of the sketch a little differently. On the top set of blocks, I use the middle one as an embellishment paper and the far right one as a journaling block, instead of using them for photos as I did in the first layout. I use the same main photo, but crop it differently for a portrait orientation. I also use an action from Melissa Renfro's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photo Basics PSE 5001 to mute the colors and support my "quiet" theme. I change the smaller photos to support the theme as well.

As you can see, sketches are very versatile. You can use the same sketch in many different ways and configurations. You can change the orientation of the sketch and change the colors of your photos and your embellishments to fit your theme. You can mix and match the use of the blocks in the sketch for even more options. Sketches can be a great tool when you are stuck on a layout or want a layout done fast. They can also be a great launching point for a new and creative take on the same sketch. The sky is the limit! Have fun exploring and playing with sketches!
