Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
For my photo I applied Syndee's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Aged Photos 6301 - #3. In the Layers Palette, I clicked on the down arrow key on the right side to reveal the Layer Effects. I double-clicked on Pattern Overlay to open the menu. I played around with the Pattern Settings by clicking on the down arrow key. This will bring up the Pattern Picker. For the look I wanted, I changed the settings to "Brushed Pen on Canvas" and changed the Opacity to 65%. Don't be afraid to play around with the preset settings!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I have been playing around lately with making different elements look like stickers and for this layout, I wanted my title to pop a little more so I applied the same technique to it. First, type out your title in the font, color and size that you would like. (For my title, I wanted to do something a little more colorful, so I made each letter a different color.) With the title layer still highlighted, select the "fx" button at the bottom of the Layers Palette. Here you will select Stroke. For my title, I selected a white color, Outside and 8 px. All other settings can stay at the default. Then click "OK." You can then add a realistic drop shadow to complete your title.

Journaling: One of the best parts of summer for us is all the food! I don't know what it is, but we just seem to experiment more and try new things. We also love to GRILL - or I should say, Jeff loves to! This summer especially, we have been trying different things, different types of steak, pork, and chicken recipes... We of course still have our usual standby of hamburgers and hot dogs and brats! Before summer's end, we even hope to try shish kebobs and some other new foods and recipes for the grill. Of course, we don't grill all of our food... fruits, especially watermelon, remain favorites during summer and I can also be found making more sweet desserts, like dump cake. Yum! So I guess that's one of the best things about summer for us... the food!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To change the color of the acrylic bracket to red, I used the Color Picker to make my background color the same red as the splat on my layout. After making sure the bracket layer was highlighted in my Layers Palette, I used the Ctrl+U (Cmd+U) shortcut to bring up the Hue/Saturation menu. I checked both the "Colorize" and "Preview" boxes and adjusted the Saturation and Lightness Sliders until I had the exact same red color as the splat. Don't you just love digital scrapbooking!

Journaling: This bright, happy sunflower greeted us one morning. No, we never planted it! Yes, it was the only one. You see, a single seed fell from the birdseed we place outside. Landscapers call such a flower a "volunteer." I like to think of it as a thank you from our feathered friends for our act of kindness toward them. Meeder Backyard 2009

"Our Yard" by Jennifer Wight

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create my title, I first brushed my letters onto a new layer forming my title. I wanted to add color to each letter using Ariadna's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Freehand Painting 8201 Super Biggie. In order for each letter to have a different color, I needed to copy my brushed title to many different layers. To do this, I copied my title onto a new layer. With the bottom title layer highlighted, I used my Paint Bucket (any color) to fill in the empty space of one letter. I then added Ariadna's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Freehand Painting 8201 Super Biggie to the layer. I repeated this until all my letters were colored. I left my original title as the top layer to give it a solid outline.

Journaling: I love our yard in the spring & summer! Everything is green, the water runs through the ditch, and new life is everywhere. Our house sits on an acre of land in the middle of a very quiet neighborhood. Growing up in the suburbs of California, both Jared and I love the calm atmosphere of our Idaho location. We enjoy sitting under the large willow tree as we listen to the birds sing and watch the kids play on their play set or in their sand box that Jared built for them. Our neighbors all own animals and we enjoy the benefits from that. We love watching the friendly cows graze, feeding carrots to the horses, and holding new born lambs. We love the calm flow of the ditch that runs along the property. The kids catch pretend fish in it, RJ even caught a shark. We love cooking hot dogs or s'mores over our firepot on warm summer nights or feeding the friendly ducks that share our yard as well. We feel so blessed to live in such a nice area and enjoy making wonderful memories in our own backyard.

To blend my photo into the background paper, I set the photo layer's Blending Mode to "Color Burn" and lightened it by adjusting the Levels (Enhance> Adjust Lighting> Levels.) I then used Brandie Valenzuela's Brush Set: Grungelle to erase unwanted portions of my photo.

When I first started this layout, I started with the blue paper as my background. I decided I wanted to add a little more dimension to my layout, so I pulled out Theresa Kavouras' ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates:Fancy Folds 5, and they were just the thing to add some spice to my layout!

I love Paula Wright's embellishment templates. They are so realistic-looking! The ribbon in the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates Gathered Borders has depth, so when I "stitched" it down, the stitching appeared to be floating on top of the layout. To keep the realistic look, I duplicated the stitching layer and applied ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Embed 1801 to the layer on the bottom. I wanted the style to give an embedded look but I didn't want it to affect the color of the stitching. This gave me the deep, three-dimensional look I wanted.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted to use Marnie's ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Oil Spill to give texture and character to my background paper that complimented the car wash theme for my layout. By itself though, it gave too much texture and drew my eye away from the main focus of my layout. To fix this, I highlighted the Oil Slick paper layer and used the Magic Wand to selected just one color of the oil slick in the paper. I chose a medium grey. Then, with the marching ants dancing, I hit Ctrl+J to bring just the highlighted portion to a new layer. I layered that above my background paper and played with the Blending Modes and Opacity of the new layer to find just the right look. Here the Blending Mode is set to "Normal" and the Opacity down to around 50%. Lastly I re-colored the paper to better match the blue in my layout photos.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
In order to provide some balance between my title block, which is quite heavy, and the photographs, which I really wanted to feature, I added a stitched border to either side of the frame. I did this using ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Edge It 5001 with Dynamic Brush Set: Straight Stitch 5001 and then I applied ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Sew Doodly Biggie 3201. Once the border was created I selected the EdgeIt_EffectLayer (the stitching), by clicking on its thumbnail image. Using my Eraser Tool, I removed the top and bottom edges of the border, leaving just the stitching on either side of the frame.
