LIFE MUSES BY RO

Facing A Truth

My life has literally been turned upside down by the B{U} project I began last January. If I had known what would happen to me following the day when I had my B{U} light-bulb experience, I might have become afraid.

One night, as I wrote in my journal, a new truth-brick fell out of the sky and gave me a shiner. I was scribbling away – and was four pages into my rant – when I saw myself write something critical to my progress. "I do not have to continue to undermine myself."

I was stunned. "What? What did I just say? I am undermining myself?"

I stopped and drew arrows at the sentence. I knew it was true. I do have a pattern of undermining myself. There are many reasons I do it, but the most important one was that I have had this constant feeling that it is wrong to succeed.

I was teased a lot when I was a child. I was different. I played a lot of musical instruments. I was ahead of most of my peers in school. My parents owned the only department store in our little town and many of the kids were jealous of the things my parents gave me.

Over time, I began to say things like, "These pants? Oh no... they aren't new. I've had them for a long time." I hid my high test scores in the same way those students who received failing scores cover their papers. I stopped talking about what was happening in my life except to a few, carefully chosen friends. I struggled with my desire to be loved and acknowledged from my talents as I sensed that I was punished for using them.

I began to believe that other people don't like it when you do well. They get mad at you. They say mean things about you. They say mean things to you. They leave you and you end up alone.

After a while, things started to happen to me. I got sick. I was nearly killed in car accidents. I fell down and twisted my ankle. Friends dumped me. I was laid off of work. I transferred into a difficult teaching situation. I said stupid things. I did stupid things.

My fears about success acted like radio waves, shouting to the universe, "Here's one for you. Come and get her." The target on my back read, "Help me by hitting me." I helped the universe bonk me on the head as I made several bad decisions that totally disrupted my life.

And so, the night I saw myself write in my journal, "I do not have to continue to undermine myself," I was shaken to my core. I gasped as the realization of what this new knowledge meant to me; I had to change.

It's been a hard go since that night. I've had to look in the mirror and see who is standing there: Me. No excuses allowed. No ducking out allowed.

But, I'm improving. I'm learning to question what is happening to me. I'm learning to be brave enough to stand up for myself. I'm learning to be proactive about becoming healthier. I'm learning to be honest enough with myself to admit when I've blown it. I'm learning to learn from my experiences rather than coast through them.

Yes, learning to be ME has been quite the experience and I have a strong sense that I haven't even scratched the surface. It's going to be a long, weed-filled journey.

- Ro

P.S. I have written a series of posts on my blog about the B{U} project. If you'd like to see them, you can check there. I'm sure that there will be more in the future because I have a long way to go.

DIGITAL SCRAPBOOKING TUTORIAL

Bridal Shower Invitations

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0 with Windows Vista.

In a few months, a good friend of mine is getting married and I am helping to give her a bridal shower. With today's technology, we've decided to email the party invitations. We searched for some cute e-cards that fit her personality but, not having any luck, I have decided to design my own. By following these easy steps, you can create them, too.

Start with a new 6x4 inch document and then open one of the templates from the ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Round and Round. I'm using the template design for the card.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Open template.

Since the card is 6x4 inches, you'll want to resize the template so that it is also six inches wide. (Image> Resize> Image Size.) This will not give an exact fit, but it will make resizing much easier since it's closer to the postcard size. Select all of the template layers except the background layer and drag them over to the postcard template. Resize as needed.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Drag layers onto new document.

Select the supplies you want to use to decorate the invitation. Before moving the papers over to the template, resize them to 6x6 inches. This will keep the patterns in proportion to size of the card.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Resize papers.

After adding the background, it's time to decorate the circles. Clipping masks make this easy. Click on the circle you want to add paper to and this will make it the active layer. Pull the background paper over to your template and it will become the new layer directly above the template.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Pull background to template.

With the paper layer active, hold down Ctrl+G to mask it to the template. (If you are using Photoshop CS2 or above, press Alt+Ctrl+G.)

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Clipping mask.

Repeat to decorate the rest of the circle embellishments.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial Screenshot: Repeat as necessary.

Add finishing touches and any party information that you'd like to include. You now have a beautiful party invitation that is ready to send.

Stop! Before you unsubscribe... Did you know we have a Weekly Round-Up newsletter?

This action-packed newsletter is sent out on Tuesday afternoons and summarizes what has happened in the past week. It's perfect for people who feel that they are too busy to read the daily editions! If you would like to receive our Round Up Newsletter, scroll to the bottom of this email and use the "Update Profile/Email Address" option to join the Round Up list and/or change your subscription options to our newsletters.

Of course, the Weekly Round Up Newsletter contains a fresh, new freebie, so even if you like to get the daily newsletters, you might want to join the Weekly Round-Up Newsletter, too. It's a great way to keep track of all of the fun things you are learning!
