He: Something must be new. What?

She: I'll let you go away and think about it.

He: About what's new? Nothing is new.

She: If you say so. Nothing is new.

He: Do you know something I don't know? Is something new?

She: I'll let you go away and think about if something is new or not.

He: (Finally, looking at her carefully...) Oh... you got your hair done. Looks nice.

P.S. When I got my hair done, I imagined a conversation with my hubby in which he would tell me how beautiful I am as soon as he laid his eyes on me. He is usually a very observant fellow.

Creating Your Own Decoupage Layouts and Photos

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Windows Vista.

I have a stash of canvases in my crafting gear. If I'm ever at a craft store and I see they're on sale, I'll grab a few. There really isn't much hanging on the walls of my home – but the things that are there are some of my favorite photos, layouts and art I've made. I discovered a neat way to use the canvases with some of my favorite digital scrapbooking supplies.

Supplies: printer, tape, white tissue paper, white canvas, cardstock, Mod Podge, sponge paint brushes, photos and your favorite Scrap Girls digital scrapbooking supplies.

Decide which backgrounds or elements to use. I am using papers from the Evelyn Collection. Resize the backgrounds to a size that your printer can handle. (I do not own a large format printer). For decoupaging an item, 7x7 inches is a good size for papers.

Cut a piece of white tissue paper large enough for the background to fit on. Center and adhere the piece of tissue paper onto a sheet of cardstock. (It doesn't matter what kind of cardstock, you just need a heavy weight paper.) Make sure you tape all the edges of the tissue paper down. This is an important step because if you don't you may end up jamming your printer. Print your background on the tissue paper side.

Here's what the printed background should look like. Let the ink dry for a minute and then carefully remove the tape from the edges. You may find that cutting around the tape is easier, since you won't rip the tissue paper. Repeat the process for as many backgrounds or elements that you would like to use on your project. Tear, cut and fold the pieces of paper in different sizes. There's no rhyme or reason to this step, just do what you want.

Using a sponge brush, apply Mod Podge to the surface of the canvas. Begin placing pieces of the printed tissue paper over the glue. Again, feel free to fold them, tear them, whatever! Keep applying papers until you're satisfied with the result. After the glue dries, apply another thin coat over the tissue paper to seal it.

You can use this method to make a pretty wall hanging. You can also incorporate word art or photos to make a hybrid layout.

I added the photo and the glitter letters after my canvas dried. I thought this was a fun alternative to a regular photo frame.

These are 4x4 inch mini canvases that I made using the same technique. After I sealed them with a topcoat, I painted the edges white with acrylic paint. I took a photo of them on my mantel and added a few embellishments to make the actual photo of my finished project into a layout.

East Coast High Noon Crop

Join your guest host April Showers for the East Coast High Noon Crop every Wednesday at 10am Mountain Time. These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes, simply giving participants a one hour goal, and a fun, new challenge each week! On September 16th, we'll do a No Photo Challenge! Create a layout without any photos. Everything else is fine! Are there some things you'd like to document but you don't have photos? Try using scanned memorabilia or extensive journaling to make a memorable layout without photos. You'd be amazed what you can get done in just one hour! We hope you'll join us!

SEPTEMBER EVENTS

September Message Board Game: BINGO!

It's that time again! Join us for an exciting game of BINGO on the Message Board in September! Pick 25 words from the list provided in the Monthly Message Board Game forum and send them in an e-mail to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD" and your message board user name by Wednesday, September 2nd (11:59pm MT) in order to play in the first round which will begin Thursday, September 3rd. Each day, members of the Welcoming Committee will call 5 random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "Bingo!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards can be cleared and a new round will begin the following day. All winners win a $5 gift certificate to the boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

If you miss the first round cutoff date, you can still play! Just send in your Bingo card at any time during the month and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts. Everyone who sends in a Bingo card will receive a confirmation email that their card has been received. If you do not receive confirmation within 24 hours, please re-send your list of words.

Layout Contests:

September Monthly Layout Contest: We're coming up on the date 09/09/09. For this layout contest, we want you to create a layout using repetition. It can be a photo that is repeated, an embellishment, a color... the possibilities are many. Create your layout and post it in the September Layout Contest Gallery by Midnight MT on September 30th. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the details tab. If your layout is chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

August Mid-Month Layout Contest: Everybody loves dogs – right? For the August Mid-month Challenge we want you to scrap photos of your dog(s) – current or past. Not a dog person? Then you can scrap your photos of your cat or any other pet. Create your layout and post it in the August Mid-Month Layout Contest Gallery by Midnight MT on September 15th. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the Details tab. If your layout is chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Signature Contest: Season of Change

Summer is coming to a close with Fall just around the corner in the Northern hemisphere and weather is getting warmer in the Southern. Kids have gone back to school and before we know it, the holidays will be upon us. It's time to update those signatures. The guidelines for signatures and instructions for linking can be found here. Create your signature using mostly Scrap Girls products, following the guidelines, and upload to the Season of Change Signature gallery by 11:59 PM Mountain Time, September 30th to be eligible for the contest. Two winners will be randomly selected - one person will receive a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls boutique and a runner-up will receive a $5 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls boutique! It's time to replace those crazy monkeys before they're gone for good!
