Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I took one of the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Brackets and opened the PSD file. All of the layers are named so that I knew where to place various papers I used as backgrounds and photos. To add one of my photos to the template, I moved it onto my layout and made sure that the photo was just above the photo template layer. I then applied a clipping mask (Ctrl+G) and this made my photo take on the shape of the layer below it!

For this layout, I used tags to add more focus to my photo. Making sure my foreground color was set on white, I used Valerie's ScrapSimple Tools - Shapes: Tags 2101 and positioned three tags on my photo, each on separate layers. I then clicked on each tag layer and added Shalae's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Transparency 4901. Now my tags were transparent, and I was able to see my photo underneath. I added Cheryl's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Inked Edges Basics 4101 to each tag layer to add more dimension.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

The beauty of Marnie Adams' sketches from her Scrapbooking 911: 20 Sketches to Revitalize Your Digital Scrapbooking - Book 3 eBook is that you can take it at face value, and scrap the template OR you can play around with the sketches and create a completely new layout. Here I turned Sketch No. 19 around a number of times, moved the three smaller photos into different positions and then duplicated the layout, made a second page for my double page spread and rotated and moved the elements around once more to get my final product. So, the fundamental idea of the sketch is still visible, yet I have made it my own by just playing around with the positions of all the elements.

Journaling: Six-and-a-half years after moving into our home we finally got to do the renovations we had been talking about for those same six-and-a-half years! The kitchen, both bathrooms, the laundry, the floors and the front door are done, wahooo. Now we save for the next round, LOL, The carpets, the front steps, the guttering, the front courtyard, the back garden and maybe, if I'm really lucky, the pool. But I suspect that by the time we are ready to do that, we'll be ready to sell up and move into a smaller place as the kids would've moved out by then, LOL!!!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I wanted to create a row of dots near my title. First click on the "Create a new layer" icon on the bottom of the Layers Palette. Choose the Brush Tool from the tool bar on the left. Make sure the foreground color is set to black. Choose a hard round brush. Choose a larger brush for larger dots or a smaller brush for smaller dots. I have chosen a 18px size brush. Also make sure in the Options Bar, the Mode is set to Normal, and the Opacity and Flow are both 100%. Next, you will need to open the Brush Palette and change the spacing between the dots. I increased mine to around 200%. Now to create the row of dots, click and hold on one side of the page (Do NOT move the mouse while you are holding.) Press and hold Shift, then move the mouse horizontally (or vertically) across the page. Try experimenting with different colors, different size brushes, and different spacing. Just make sure that for each row of dots you create, you put them on their own layer. Have fun!

The layout designers were challenged to each use the same sketch, but to make it unique, so I chose to rotate and flip it before I started my layout. First I dragged the sketch image onto a blank 12x12 document. Then I clicked Image> Rotate> 90 Degrees R and then Image> Flip Horizontal. It's an easy and effective way to maximize the potential of Marnie's sketches! A DESIGNER'S LIFE: Erica Hite

Erica Hite
Erica Hite

Have Toddler, Will Travel (Reluctantly)

Lately, I find it's often hard to come up with something original and exciting when sitting down to write one of these articles. When you're a stay-at-home mom, days can seem to blend together. My days consist of toddler: morning, noon and night. And lately, oh boy, do I mean night. But, I would like to remain somewhat positive in this and not complain too much about how tiring life with my little boy can be.

My son is a very sensitive little guy who has not handled teething well at all. I sit down to write this Designer's Life after having three long nights of staying up with my son until two in the morning, while he exhausts himself. His one-year molars have been coming in and there doesn't seem to be any relief for him other than holding him for comfort, giving him ice, and letting him play with his toys for a distraction.

I was telling my husband, as I was watching him pack for our vacation this coming week, that it would be so much easier right now if family was coming here, not us going there. You see, like many other families, we have to travel to get to relatives. We live in California and our families are sprinkled from Illinois all the way to the east coast. This has been the hardest past 15 months of my life and I can imagine how much easier and more comforting it might have been if we had been fortunate to have had family nearby. I would love my son to spend days in the arms of loving family members or, let's be honest, to have a long nap or night out with my hubby. Oh and some time to design! But instead, there are rarely any breaks for this mama.

This is the very first time we are taking a plane ride with Lucian. First, we are flying non-stop to Chicago and then, after a few days of visiting with my mom and step-father, we'll be driving to Ohio to stay with my husband's family. I have no idea what to expect from these four and six-hour trips. Will we survive? Will a miracle happen and we come out of this having fun as a family and remembering the trip fondly? Who knows?

I've spent the few months leading up to this trip mentally biting my fingernails and wondering how to prepare. A while ago, I posted to the very friendly Scrap Girls message board asking for advice on traveling with toddlers. I received lots of great tips, a few of which I was happy to do. I bought some new board books (he loves flipping through his books) a travel doodling toy that uses a water pen, some painter's tape (I've heard it can be fun to ball up and stick on things in the car) and snacks he doesn't normally get.

I would like to tell you how my trip went. Perhaps, that will be another article or I'll simply do a layout about it when we get back. Cross your fingers for me.

Destinations Collection

Admittedly, I haven't traveled too much or too far, but traveling fascinates me regardless. After my mother shared her photos with me from a recent trip through Europe, I was inspired to create a travel collection and even used her photos for the layouts. I especially enjoyed illustrating the luggage stickers, and making them look like old vintage labels.

Have you seen the August kit? I love it and I wish I could download it today! Thanks for a great kit, Valerie!

div

Yes, I saw it. It's so fun. I can't wait to use the gorgeous butterflies, dragonflies and the very cool zoom page... I love that. The alpha (always my favorite) is very cool. Great job, V!

div

I think I have a new favorite collection. This one is so me. I'll be out of town on Monday and it's going to be hard to wait on this one. Maybe we could stop at a Caribou Coffee or Panera Bread just so I could download it and play in the car. My husband loves when I scrap in the car. He gets to drive.

div

The August Scrap Girls kit is beautiful! I can't wait to download it. The colors are just gorgeous and there are so many pretty things to play with. I promise I'll make a layout of my sister's new bulldog puppy, Tiger, using the kit and post it in the gallery. (Only you would understand that's a special compliment. Tiger's going to look a lot like Moss when he grows up and I love Moss. Your layouts of him just totally melt me.) I can't wait to check out all the little details. Thanks so much!

div

I love the dragonflies, the colors and everything else! Thanks, Valerie, for a superb kit!

div

Monday seems like a long way away now. But, it's also my birthday. There is no better present to open than the new club kit!

div

Valerie, I think you outdid yourself with this kit. It's absolutely beautiful. I love those butterflies, dragonflies and the colors are just superb. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

Gorgeous collection, Valerie! I can't wait until Monday. I love the panic button word art. I know the perfect man to fit that description.

div

It's gorgeous! Of course, I need the solids to go with it. I have them in my cart right now.

div

Valerie, this is a very beautiful kit and this must have been the secret surprise you were hinting at during one of the chats this past week! It was well worth the surprise!

div

V has been one of my favorite designers for a while now! I'm so excited about this club. There's something in there that I swear I've been looking for and wanting and hadn't found until now.

div

Oh my goodness, Valerie! This is amazing! I can't even describe how much I love it! No wonder you are so busy. I can't believe you took time out to make me boats. So astonishing! I can't wait to get my hands on it!

div

I saw a layout this morning on the home page and thought, "oh my gosh! I have to have that kit!" To my delight, it turns out that it is the Scrap Girls club kit this month!

div

Valerie, it is beautiful. I love the butterflies, dragonflies, the word art and the colors you used. I love it all. Thanks for another great club!
