Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make the tinker toy sticks, I used a pencil embellishment from Mixed Media Embellishments. I used the Clone Tool to get rid of the text on the pencil. Then, I cut off the 'pencil' end of it. After stretching it lengthwise to get the shape right, I used the Polygonal Lasso Tool to make a cut out in each end of the stick to resemble the actual toy ones.

When I read Mandy and Valerie's Ten Basic Design Principles eBook, one of the things I learned was the value of repeating photos or elements for emphasis and grouping them in odd numbers. This is why I chose to repeat the same photo of my son Logan sleeping three times.

Sometimes the easiest way to tie a page together is to duplicate elements and place them on opposite sides of the page. I did that here with both the leaves and the green textured paper. For the leaves, I duplicated them four times and bunched them together behind the photos for an extra pop of color. For the paper, I selected a strip from the original and placed it at the top and bottom of the page to add some balance and pull your eye in to the center of the page.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create the journaling strips, I used the Rectangular Marquee Tool to shape the strip and filled it with my desired color. To give my journaling strips texture, I stamped Brandie Valenzuela's Brush Set: Worn Threads and Brush Set: Grungelle on a new layer above the strip. I also clipped Mandy Steward's ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Coffee Stains on some of my strips. For variety, try using different combinations of distressing brushes at different sizes, colors and Blending Modes for each strip. Finally, to give my layout that paper scrapbook feel, I applied a low drop shadow on each strip. It makes the strips look like they have been pasted or glued onto the layout.

I needed to adjust the colors of some of the papers I was using to match the color scheme of the layout. I highlighted the paper I was going to adjust in the Layers Palette. Then I went to Enhance> Adjust Color >Color Variations and played with the settings until I got the colors I wanted.

Photos of rolls of toilet paper aren't all that exciting, so before I even started with the layout, I had to do something to the photos to even make them layout worthy. First, I ran ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photos That Pop PSE 1801 to make the colors in the original photos really vibrant. Then I flattened the photos and ran ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Comical PSE 8301 Mini, using the fourth option in the set, which is "DIY" settings. I ran those at the default options as they are set in the action. The effects turned out very dramatic, making them much more fun and useful for my layout. I chuckled to myself the whole time I was putting together this layout!

Journaling: Toilet paper on rolls and put on a bar for easy use has been a modern convenience since the late 1800's. I know, cause I googled it! Here it is, 2009, over 100 years later, and my family is still working on mastering the concept! They sometimes get it close, sometimes miss it far, and sometimes they don't get a new roll on at all!!! LOL!!!

I love to use clips on layouts, they give a really realistic effect. To make my paper clip on my layout look like it was actually clipped to the tag, I had the paper clip on the layer above the tag. Then, I chose the Eraser Tool and erased the portion of the paper clip that would be behind the tag if it were a paper layout. I added a small drop shadow, and that gave it the realistic appearance that it was clipped to the tag.
