At night, when my mind is running as fast as my computer’s fan, I often spray lavender over my pillows. As soon as I smell the lovely purple scent waft under my nose, I feel a calm descend upon me like a soft, white comforter.

A few nights ago, as I was spraying lavender, I was puzzled because I couldn’t smell lavender. I pumped the bottle two or three times, watching the mist blow out and fall on my bed.

Again, I couldn’t smell lavender. I furiously pumped the bottle four or five more times. But nothing happened.

“That’s odd,” I thought. “The pump seems to be working. I can see mist coming out of the bottle.”

I looked carefully at the bottle and the nozzle to see if I could find a flaw. But it seemed okay, so I decided to try one last time.

Squirt. Squirt. Squirt.

As I watched the lavender mist fall on the bed, it occurred to me that I was leaning away from the bed rather than towards it. My nose wasn’t close enough to the action.

“Lean into it,” my mind instructed. “Lean into the lavender.”

As soon as I did, lavender filled my senses.

Since then, I’ve wondered how often I’ve accidentally pulled away from something I want to achieve or have. I’ve wondered how often I am pulling away from something good. I’ve wondered how often I get in my own way when all I need to do is remember to lean into the lavender.

Getting More From Your Collections With ScrapSimple Paper Templates

I have so many favorite digital scrapbooking collections that I have purchased over the years and last year I realized that the same old favorite background papers kept popping up time and time again! That's when I discovered the beauty of ScrapSimple Paper Templates! They give me the freedom to express my creativity in so many new ways. I'm going to show you my favorite (and simplest) way of using them.

First, choose the template you want to work with. I am using one from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Patterned Petals 1. Select the first paper you want to create an overlay pattern from. I am using a greenish paper from A Washed Garden Collection.

Drag the PNG template onto the paper so that it is on the layer above the paper. Make sure that the template is placed exactly on the edges on all sides. With the top layer highlighted, Ctrl+Click to select the entire template. You will see that the template is now surrounded by a moving dotted line.

Now, with the template still selected, move your cursor down to the paper layer and press Ctrl+Shift+I to invert the selection. You want to delete the areas of paper not directly under the template. NOTE: You may have to double-click on the paper layer to make it editable if it is marked as “Background” with a little padlock.

Once you are done with the paper layer, press Ctrl+Shift+I to invert the selection and you will see the selection change. Press Delete and the rest of the paper will be deleted. Then, delete the template layer. You are now left with a beautiful paper cut-out to place on the paper of your choice.

Because you have not played with any Blending Modes, you have the paper you love, exactly in the colors you love! Now, select a coordinating paper to lay it over and you are done. I am using a plain blue paper from the Flowering Flourishes Paper Biggie that goes well with the green and blue of my new overlay. The result is a whole new look for me to play with. There is lots of texture, lots of color, lots of fun! Now, if you want to play with Blending Modes, styles, patterns or textures you can, the only limit is your imagination! I use the same technique over my word art too and the effect is great!

Join us this month on the Message Board for a month long game of “Hide and Seek!” The designers have each chosen their favorite product that they've designed and it's your task to find each one! Every day from July 1-31 a member of the Welcoming Committee will post up a designer's name (or two!) and a clue to their personal favorite product that they've designed. You'll get a special peek into the minds and inspiration of the Scrap Girls designers as you search for their favorites contained in the boutique. When you find the correct product, you'll know it because a special little sunny marker will be waiting for you to let you know “You found it!”

Compile a list of links to the correct products throughout the month and send the list to [email protected] by August 1st at 11:59 p.m. (MST) for your chance to win a prize! Everyone who finds all THIRTY-SEVEN products will have their name added into a drawing for one of seven $5 gift certificates to the Scrap Girls boutique!
