A Healthy Addiction

Concrete under her feet, she shivered in the wind. When she talked, she could hear the raspy sounds escape her vocal chords betraying the late nights, nursing her obsession.

“You have a cold,” he said.

“Hmmmm,” she replied, not wishing to lie and yet not wishing to tell him the truth.

“You ought to take something for that. My mother used to make me a drink of hot water, lemon and honey.”

“Sounds soothing,” she replied.

“Yes, it was.” He smiled. “But some of her concoctions weren’t quite as pleasant.”

“Oh?” She laughed.

“Anytime that I coughed, she stuck me in bed with a mustard plaster.”

“What on earth is that?”

“Some kind of pasty stuff that she smeared between dishtowels. If she made her cure too hot, my skin would turn beet red and I would beg to take it off.”

“You poor thing,” she commiserated.

“Maybe I ought to put you in bed with a mustard plaster,” he winked. “It might be just the thing.”

“No, I’ll be alright. I just need to relax.”

“Perhaps, you’re right. You have been working hard. You were up until 2 a.m. last night!”

“Yes, I was up late,” she said, looking around desperately to see if she could discover something to distract him with. He was getting too close to her secret.

“Maybe, you ought to give up your job and find another one, dear,” he said. “One that will allow you to have more free time. I’d love to see you pursue your interests.”

“You think so?” She smiled brightly at him. “You don’t mind if I spend time on my hobbies?”

“Of course not.”

“Well... then... I have a confession to make. If you are sure you don’t mind... I think that I had better tell you that I’ve been hiding something from you.”

As he listened, his face turned white. What could his wife be hiding from him? Gulping he said, “Go ahead.”

“I’m addicted to something.”

“Addicted?”

“Yes. Addicted.”

“As in, you need a ‘12 Step Program and our lives are about to fall apart’ addicted?”

“No, not addicted in that way.”

He was confused. “Is this an addiction that I need to be worried about?”

“Not really. It is a healthy addiction.”

“Healthy? You have an addiction that is healthy?”

“Yes. I am happy when I am doing it, but I have been hiding it from you just the same. It is the reason that I am tired and that is why I sound like I have a cold.”

“You haven’t been working?”

“No.”

“But, I see you at the computer for hours. You look like you are working.”

She grinned at him. “No, I haven’t been working. I’ve been digital scrapbooking.”

“Digital scrapbooking? Isn’t scrapbooking gluing things onto paper? Where does the digital come into it?”

Laughing, she said, “No silly... I am making my layouts on the computer and printing them out. I have just finished something and I guess it is time to show you. I was hoping to wait until after we ate cake at the restaurant, but here you go... happy birthday!”

She pulled a wrapped package out of the enormous bag she carried and grinned. When he opened it, he saw a book with his name on it. As he flipped through the pages, he was delighted to see page after page filled with the events of his childhood.

“How did you do this?”

“Your mom gave me your pictures and told me the stories. I scanned them in, cleaned them up in Photoshop Elements, made the layouts in there, too, and printed them out. I hope you like it.”

“Like it?” He smiled. “It’s the best present you have ever given me.”

“Thanks,” she croaked. “Would you do something for me now?”

“Sure. What do you want?”

“How about some of that lemon and honey, honey...”

BEST OF THE MESSAGE BOARD

QUESTION: I just started tagging my supplies and I'm not kidding... I may die before I finish them all. What a long, slow process. I know it will be wonderful when it's all done, but wow, tagging 70 gigs of stuff is going to take YEARS. Sigh. The good thing is that I'm getting to revisit all of my cool stuff. Now, I think I'll take a break and make a layout and then it’s back to it. Sigh.

div

ANSWER 1: Good luck with your tagging. Then there is the keeping up with new products, too. I personally don't tag, but I like your idea of taking a break to do a layout with your revisited supplies.

div

ANSWER 2: I'm doing the same thing right now. I'm working on the papers. Next will be the embellishments, which will obviously take FOREVER. Good idea to take breaks!

div

ANSWER 3: I haven't started. It seems overwhelming. I have all of my supplies on the laptop and I can't imagine tagging them all. Sigh. Give us updates, okay? I'm hoping it goes well for you. Maybe I'll be inspired to get to it, too. What do you do if you don't tag? Do you just keep the collections together or do you split them and organize?

div

ANSWER 4: I don't tag either. I keep them in collections and I split them up by categories in folders. I think that is enough time spent and the system works well for me. I am planning to do a little more breaking down of my folders into more detail.

div

ANSWER 5: I don't tag either. Mine are kept in their original folders by collections. Sometimes, I just browse my collections and folders using Windows Live Gallery and that inspires me to use what I find for some of my layouts.

div

ANSWER 6: How do you do your system? I have kept all my collections together, but find that I can't remember which designer did a template or embellishment I'm looking for... thus, the tags. It takes too long to just scroll through the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of options. I would LOVE to have an easier way.

div

ANSWER 7: Keep going, it is so worth it. I tag in Adobe Bridge and it took me ages to do the initial tagging, but it meant nothing was actually split up. I can find a frame or a ribbon in my stuff, yet all of my collections are in their folders. It's brilliant. Break it down into stages. I think it took me two to three weeks to complete it, but now it just takes minutes after I download.

div

ANSWER 8: I spent WAY too much time tagging all of mine in ACDSee. As in, pretty much the WHOLE summer and I didn't scrapbook much at all during that time. I was in a huge slump, but at least now that my things are tagged, I can scrapbook much faster and, in my opinion, be more creative with how I mix things from different kits. So, it worked out very well for me. But, believe me, I know how daunting a task it can be, as I think I have at least that much stuff, too. One tip is to tag in broader categories now and get "done" faster. Then, go back later if you want/need to and tag more specifically. For example, one big journaling category now and then later break it up into bookplates, journaling boxes, tags, tabs, index folders and office supplies. Just tag paper now and then later go back and break up by color if necessary or add categories for: stripes, plaid, words, damask, floral, solids, etc. I need to get caught up on my tagging from all of the things I've purchased in the last month or two, but right now I'm on a scrapping roll, so my tagging has taken a backseat.

div

ANSWER 9: I do mine in a very similar way to Ro's plan. As I get more stuff, I find I do need to break down some of my categories a little more. I like to keep the kits together so that I can work with them that way. But, sometimes, a kit doesn't have everything I need. If I need a tag or a journaling block that is not included in the kit, I can then go to my tags and look for one that goes with my current layout. I hope this helps!

div

ANSWER 10: I find that as I get more stuff, I do add new folders and break down into subcategories. There are still a few things that just don't characterize themselves easily and I put those in a miscellaneous file.

div

ANSWER 11: It works pretty well for me. If I am not sure between two folders on where to put something, I put a copy in both places! I can find anything pretty fast. I started out using PSE Organizer to tag stuff, but it was way too slow, so I stopped using this method. Also, I didn't want to buy another program. This way is free!

div

ANSWER 12: I am right there with you! I just found a great system for me which entails tagging and I have 68 GB to do and just started last week. I spent nearly a whole Saturday tagging and got one disk done! I have three disks and that is only of kits. I have three disks of paper, disks of templates and disks of paper templates and then... on it goes. So, I sure do know how you are feeling. Maybe we could encourage each other along the way! I did stop and do a layout and it is AWESOME having things tagged. It is so quick to get to things and I'm finding such lovely stuff that I have. Although it is a long slow process, I'm finding it so rewarding already. So be encouraged, it will be fabulous when it is done!

div

ANSWER 13: Your post inspired me to start tackling my organizing, too. I've been working with my stuff in original collection files (but with papers from one collection all condensed to one folder, etc., so slightly condensed from the original downloaded files) and it's just getting too cumbersome. I know I'm missing out on using really good stuff in my stash because I don't have it better organized. So I'm tackling now, too. I don't think I have quite nine trillion things, but I'll commiserate with you on the tediousness of the task.

div

ANSWER 14: I'm in the midst of this process, too. It's slow going, but I think the payoff will be worth it!

div

ANSWER 15: I copied all of my supplies to my laptop when I read about the ability of Windows Photo Gallery in Vista to tag - it is awesome! But, I have to re-tag everything and it is a long, tedious process. But, you do re-discover a lot of cool things along the way.

div

ANSWER 16: Tagging takes FOREVER. It took me forever to do it. I have a ton of stuff. But, it is so absolutely worth it. It really makes a difference in your layouts and you're going to absolutely love it when it's done. What I would do is just sit and tag while I was watching movies or whatever. It is an awesome thing to have done - keep going! You'll love it!

NSBR Chat
Monday, July 6th - 9:00PM ET

What is NSBR? It's a non-scrapbooking related chat! We talk about everything, including some scrapbooking and usually chocolate. It's a great chance to meet new friends, catch up on what everyone is up to, and just relax! If you have a problem, we'll lend an ear or a shoulder to cry on. Have some great news to share? We'd love to celebrate with you. So join Carla (CRS) on July 6th at 9pm ET in the chat room!

High Noon Crop
Wednesday, July 8th - 12:00Noon ET

Join your guest host April Showers for the High Noon Crop every Wednesday. These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes, simply giving participants a one hour goal, and a fun, new challenge each week! On July 8th, we'll do a Stripes Challenge! Create a layout using stripes. Create your own or used striped paper. It doesn't matter as long as your layout has some stripes. You'll have one hour to create a layout and upload to the special High Noon Crop gallery. You'll be amazed what you can get done in just one hour!

JUNE EVENTS

June Message Board Game: Re-JUNE-venate!

We helped you jumpstart your January and now it's time to re-JUNE-venate your focus on scrapbooking! Join us on the message board this month for “Re-JUNE-venate”! This is a message board game and challenge that focuses on taking time to scrapbook regularly despite the little speedbumps of life. When the month is over you'll have completed several layouts and been challenged and treated to some fun along the way... with prize opportunities thrown in as well!

A member of the Welcoming Committee will post a mini-challenge/task every day from June 1-30. Some tasks will require message board participation, email responses or gallery posting. Read each daily task carefully to see what is required of you. Those who complete all tasks and submit or post required participation will be entered in a drawing to win one of three $10 Gift Certificates to the ScrapGirls Boutique! Those who complete just the layouts will be entered in a drawing to win one of two $5 gift certificates. Those who complete just the speedbumps will be entered in a drawing for one of two $3 gift certificates. (Those who complete all tasks will have their name entered in all three drawings!)

Join us in June for some serious scrapbooking re-JUNE-venation!
